What is a pastime? It is "something that amuses and serves to make time pass agreeably or "anything that serves as an agreeable recreation". Despite cultural and technological changes, as America grew, becoming a nation and world leader, what was work often became a pastime. However, the love of reading, singing, dancing, sports, gaming all remain with and a touch of nostalgia. These sites are just the tip of the iceberg as there are many excellent ones on the topic.

Office Hours: Monday and Wednesday, 5-7 PM and by appointment

Email: erazlogo@gmu.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION This class will investigate the development of consumer society in the United States and the relationship to national politics and culture. It looks at the ideas and institutions that have formed the foundations of consumer society; the ways these have changed over time; and the ways ordinary men and women have embraced, shaped, or resisted consumerism. We will begin by locating the origins of contemporary consumer culture in the American colonies, and analyze its relationship to the American Revolution. We will then examine the development of contemporary consumer culture, focusing on the rise of advertising and marketing, consumer boycotts, the relationship between consumers and the national state, and commercialization of public space. By the end of the course students should be able to understand varied past and contemporary critiques and uses of consumer society. Active class participation is required. READINGS Lawrence B. Past Meeting 12 Inheritance in America: From Colonial Times to the Present This discussion was led by Betty Barbour and was held on January 24, 2000. Those coming to America brought their own customs from their various countries of origin. In many cases people did not make wills. If there are no wills, then the state (or colonies) made the decision as to distribution of the estate. In some cases it is better for genealogists to refer to probates rather than wills. This is because in probates, an attempt is made to locate all family survivors. In wills, the only relatives or persons mentioned are those that the person making the will wanted to include. Inheritance probably played a more important role in the ecomomy during colonial times than in any other period in American history. The economy depended on the "family firm" or farm almost exclusively and inheritance determined the distribution among family members. Too wide a distribution of resources and control might jeopardize business operations. Keeping a firm or farm intact had its appeal. Betty used the following definitions:
  • Testate . A will is made. The maker of the will could ignore laws of distribution if he wished. Intestate . No will was left. The laws of the colony or state took over the distribution. Intestacy Laws . Enacted by each colony or state. Probate . The County Court was responsible for the distribution of propery after the death of its owner, whether there was a will or not.

Introduction
What would it be like to have been born at a different time? Or as another person? Our class is going to travel back to Colonial Days. You will each choose to become either a man, a woman, or a child from colonial times. You will bring your character to life as you pretend to live as a colonial. The Task
Each of you will become a character from Colonial Times. Everything you do on this project will be from the viewpoint of the character you have chosen. This will include your writing, research, and performance. The chart below lists your character choices. Would you like to experience life as a slave, as a student, as one of our country's founding fathers, or perhaps as Betsy Ross? You will write about your life as that character. You will also include an authentic document that was written during the time period in which you lived. The final step in your project will be to create a brochure documenting your life. We will use PrintMaster or MS Publisher to accomplish this task. The Process
Pick a character from the table below. Use the

Tell The Net Net Margaret Marsh, Ph.D., is a professor of history at Temple University, and her sister, Wanda Ronner, M.D., is an obstetrician gynecologist in Philadelphia. Together, they sought a grant from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, funded by Ortho, to study nineteenth-century surgical and instrumented interventions for infertility in the United States. They began working on Empty Cradle the year after their presentation at the ACOG's 1989 meeting. The authors' intellectual traditions combined with their obvious sensitivity to their topic has yielded a highly readable and persuasive book. They succeed in their aim in producing Empty Cradle to offer a useful history of infertility in the United States countering in particular three claims: that infertility is rising in incidence, that surgical intervention is a new phenomenon, and that women are victimized by reproductive medicine. Empty Cradle is constructed simply, discussing infertility in terms of social context and available medical care, primarily during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Marsh and Ronner also offer an interesting history of the treatment of infertility in particular, from early and misguided attempts to "correct" female anatomy surgically to today's

http://www.thinker.org/fam/education/publications/guide-american/
This teachers' guide includes a variety of materials designed to help you prepare your class for a visit to the collection of American art at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. Thanks to funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and The San Francisco Foundation, we are pleased to offer you information about twenty-four objects that represent American art from colonial times to the Civil War period. The descriptive information about the artworks is accompanied by lesson plans which serve to enhance the 5th-grade American history curriculum. This selection of objects was assembled to reflect the high quality of the works of art in the de Young collection. The degree of interest to 5th-grade students was also strongly considered in choosing pieces for this teachers' guide. Clearly, the works of art do not represent the full range of artists who were women, indigenous people, or people of non-European backgrounds who lived in America from the 1670s to the 1880s. The de Young Museum is committed to broadening its collection, and as the American art collection expands to represent a more diverse group of artists, we will make additions to this publication. The activities and research projects suggested in this guide give a more inclusive and complete picture of America during this time. We hope that you enjoy the adventure and challenge of making America's history and culture come alive for your students.

I'm afraid that I can't recommend this book. That doesn't happen very often, but I didn't care for this book. I'm not here to run down authors and their books, but I do want to give legitimate reviews that give examples of why I don't or do like certain books. What I was looking for was a "This Is Everyday Life in Colonial Times" type of book. I wanted pictures of what people wore, what they ate, what they did all day, how they accomplished whatever it was they were trying to accomplish ... you know, something to make colonial times seem real. For the most part this book does fulfill that need. There are many photos of actors in authentic dress. It appears that many photos were taken at Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown/Yorktown, and Plimoth Plantation which I believe are all living history museums. Here's a list of the topics covered: -Europe in the 1600s
-life on board ship, space, bugs, disease

About Vintage Base Ball
History of the Game
The following is the beginning to "BASEBALL, An Illustrated History", written by David Quentin Voight. It is an excellent synopsis of baseball from its earliest days to the time it was solidly established as a professional sport. Site Index
THE FORMATIVE YEARS, COLONIAL DAYS TO 1900
Major League Baseball had its origins in British ball games, notably one called rounders; an American version of rounders, called "base ball," was played as far back as Revolutionary War times. A popular pastime of youngsters and adults in northeastern American towns and villages, differing versions of base ball competed until 1845, when the New York Knickerbocker Club's formal version of base ball was generally adopted. By the 1850s the proliferation of men's baseball clubs ushered in the "Gentlemen's Era" of organized baseball. Baseball clubs, located mainly in northern and mid-western towns and cities, served the recreational interests of America's growing centers of commerce and industry. By the late 1850s baseball enthusiasts were touting the game as America's national pastime, and dozens of clubs enrolled under the National Association of Base Ball Players. Loosely organized championship competition among clubs stirred competitive spirits and attracted paying crowds that kindled interest in the game's commercial possibilities. The onslaught of the Civil War failed to dampen baseball's popularity; indeed, the game gained adherents among Civil War soldiers, and the nationalistic sentiments stirred by the Union victory enhanced baseball's mythic claim to being "America's national game."
