Conclusion

Introduction The civil conflict in Colombia has been epitomized by gross human rights violations that have increased dramatically over the past two decades. International human rights groups have repeatedly singled out right-wing paramilitary organizations as being the principal perpetrators of human rights abuses. The paramilitaries are closely allied with the Colombian Armed Forces as they wage war against, not only the guerrillas, but also anyone suspected of being a guerrilla sympathizer, such as union members, peasant organizers, human rights workers and religious activists. Some paramilitary leaders have even extended the parameters of the war against the guerrillas and they're suspected sympathizers to include drug addicts, alcoholics, prostitutes, petty criminals and the homeless in an attempt to "cleanse" Colombian society. Over the years several Colombian presidents have attempted to address the issuessocial, political and economic injusticesthat the guerrillas claim to be the principal cause of the conflict. However, these efforts have been repeatedly thwarted by the United States and its war on drugs, and by the Colombian political, economic and military elite who are desperately trying to preserve a "democracy" that has marginalized much of the population.

History and Archaeology Pre-Incan and Incan Period To visit Hacienda Zuleta is to experience four centuries of Ecuadorian history seeped in Pre-Colombian, Spanish and Ecuadorian tradition. The original inhabitants of the Zuleta region were the peace-loving Caranquis. They were an agrarian-based culture and flourished in this area rich in volcanic soils from about 800 A.D. until the arrival of the war-faring Incas in the late 1470's. Caranqui Pyramid on the grounds of Hacienda Zuleta Although the Caranquis fought stoically against the Inca for forty years, they were eventually conquered and forced into Inca servitude. Yet Inca rule was short-lived. By 1534, the last Inca king, Atahualpa, had been captured and assassinated by the Spanish conquistador, Pizarro, leaving the Inca empire in collapse and a free for all for the land-hungry vassals of the Spanish Crown. Execution of Atahualpa by Pizarro, marking the end of Inca domination in the Zuleta region, and the beginning of Spanish rule Jesuit Occupation In the late 16th century, King Carlos is believed to have bequeathed the Zuleta region to the Jesuits, who implemented their Spanish methods of farming and cattle and sheep production. In the following years an ‘obraje’ (small wool mill) was established. By 1691, the Hacienda house, granary and chapel were completed and the farm was in full operation.

When the first spaniards arrive to what is now Colombia, the largest and widespread culture was the Chibchas . They were concentrated mainly in the highland basins and valleys of the Cordillera Oriental. In addition to the millenarian civilization of San Agustin, several indigenous pre-Columbian cultures prospered, among which the Tairona, Muisca, Quimbaya and that of Tumaco were some of the most outstanding because of their social organization and culture. They attained an advanced development in the fields of agriculture, ceramics, gold and silver work. The Muisca culture together with the Tairona may be considered the main element of the collection of peoples commonly referred to as Chibchas. Colombian Indian cultures produced the finest gold work in the Americas - The legend of El Dorado has its origins in central Colombia. This is now widely appreciated thanks to the efforts of the Gold Museum of the Bank of the Republic in the last half-century. The Gold Museum has made possible its collection, study and exhibition throughout the world, and this has much to do with a revaluation of the native cultures by Colombians themselves.

Colombia makes history serving as a example for the new millenium, three people living with HIV/AIDS have been designated as advisors to the health ministry
One year ago we expressed our disgust with Virgilio Galvis, the Colombian Health Minister, after he publicly declared that "it is better to invest [funds to assist] children with diarrhea than people who have HIV, given that they are very costly."
Nevertheless, three months ago, Mr. Galvis showed significantly more sensitivity to HIV issues by making a historic decision to designate 3 persons living with HIV as his advisors.
The three advisors are:
  • [1/21/00: see below for news of Dr. Ardila's passing Dr. Henry Ardila Ardila, Epidemiologist and former Executive Director of the Colombian League in the Fight Against AIDS (Liga Colombiana de Lucha Contra el SIDA), who will serve as advisor and Assistant Coordinator of the HIV/AIDS Workgroup, a position equivalent to that of the former National Program Director (which disappeared after the restructures that the Ministry underwent this year)
  • Ms. Miriam Cossio, member of the National Network of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (Red Nacional de Mujeres Viviendo con VIH/SIDA) and alternate representative of women living with HIV/AIDS before the National Council on AIDS (Consejero Nacional de VIH/SIDA), who will serve as advisor.

History of Salsa
Salsa is not easily defined. Who invented salsa? The Cubans, Puerto Ricans? Salsa is a distillation of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances. Each played a large part in its evolution. Salsa is similar to Mambo in that both have a pattern of six steps danced over eight counts of music. The dances share many of the same moves. In Salsa, turns have become an important feature, so the overall look and feel are quite different form those of Mambo. Mambo moves generally forward and backward, whereas, Salsa has more of a side to side feel.
A look at the origin of Salsa
By: Jaime Andrés Pretell It is not only Cuban; nevertheless we must give credit to Cuba for the origin and ancestry of creation. It is here where Contra-Danze (Country Dance) of England/France, later called Danzón, which was brought by the French who fled from Haiti, begins to mix itself with Rhumbas of African origin (Guaguanco, Colombia, Yambú). Add Són of the Cuban people, which was a mixture of the Spanish troubadour (sonero) and the African drumbeats and flavora and a partner dance flowered to the beat of the clave. This syncretism also occurred in smaller degrees and with variations in other countries like the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Puerto Rico, among others. Bands of these countries took their music to Mexico City in the era of the famous films of that country (Perez Prado, most famous...). Shortly after, a similar movement to New York occurred. In these two cities, more promotion and syncretism occurred and more commercial music was generated because there was more investment. New York created the term "Salsa", but it did not create the dance. The term became popular as nickname to refer to a variety of different music, from several countries of Hispanic influence: Rhumba, Són Montuno, Guaracha, Mambo, Cha cha cha, Danzón, Són, Guguanco, Cubop, Guajira, Charanga, Cumbia, Plena, Bomba, Festejo, Merengue, among others. Many of these have maintained their individuality and many were mixed creating "Salsa".

Introduction
Last year on the Feast of the Assumption, we celebrated an important milestone in the history of the Congregation, the tenth anniversary of Basilians in Colombia. During his time as a Scholastic, Luis Fernando Sánchez put together an account of this pivotal period in the community's history, entitled Apuntes para una historia de la Congregación de San Basilio en Colombia, en sus primeros diez años (1987 - 15 de agosto - 1997) . His work is a collection of letters, notes and interviews found in the Basilian Archives of Colombia, which he supplements with his own reflections and commentary. This past year, Fr. Kevin Kirley compiled an abridged edition in English of Luis Fernando's work, which he entitled
