Geography:
Colombia
This is the country who bears the name Christopher Columbus, discoverer of the Americas. It is one of the most exotic, wild and fascinating countries in South America. Its geography, flora and fauna are amazingly diverse. It has almost everything of the other South American countries.
Colombia is the four largest country in South America, after Brazil, Argentina and Peru. It has 1,140,000 sq km. It is the only country in South America which coasts on both the Pacific and the Atlantic. It is bordered by Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru and Ecuador.
Its geography is very varied. The Western part represents, almost half of the total territory. It is mountainous, with three Cordilleras, Occidental, Central and Oriental. Apart fron the Andes chains, it has one more mountain range, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a separate and small formation rising from The Caribbean coastline to permanent snows. It is the highest coastal mountain range in the world. On the east side of the Andes there is vast lowland, Los LLanos in the north and the Amazon in the south. It also has several islands. History:
For a short period it was part of the Gran Colombia with Venezuela and Ecuador. Vnezuela broke away in 1829 and Ecuador a year later, shattering Bolivar's dream of having a big country.

REPLY Introduction Map ... Transnational Issue Introduction Colombia Background: Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Ecuador and Venezuela). A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. An anti-insurgent army of paramilitaries has grown to be several thousand strong in recent years, challenging the insurgents for control of territory and illicit industries such as the drug trade and the government's ability to exert its dominion over rural areas. While Bogota steps up efforts to reassert government control throughout the country, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

Geography
Located in the northwest corner of the South American continent, Colombia encompasses an area of more than 1.1 million square kilometers. It is the only country in South America with both Caribbean (1,760 kilometers) and Pacific coastlines (1,448 kilometers). Colombia also has international borders with five Latin American nations: Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. There were no major outstanding international boundary problems between Colombia and its neighbors in the late 1980s. All of the borders had long been delineated, and most had been demarcated by surveys and the placement of markers, although tropical jungle terrain and hostile Indians had impeded survey operations in some areas along the borders with Venezuela and Brazil. Colombia and Venezuela did, however, dispute sovereignty over the seabed in the Golfo de Venezuela, an area of potential petroleum wealth. In addition to its mainland territory, Colombia possesses a number of small islands in both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The combined areas of all these islands do not exceed sixtyfive square kilometers. In the Caribbean, off the coast of Nicaragua and 640 kilometers from the Colombian coast, Colombian territory includes an archipelago of thirteen small cays grouped around the Isla de San Andrés and the Isla de Providencia. Other small islands, cays, and banks in the same areawhich belong to Colombia but also are claimed by Nicaraguaare Isla de Santa Catalina, Cayos de Roncador, Banco de Quita Sueño, Banco de Serrana, and Banco de Serranilla. Several small islands also lie off Colombia's Caribbean coast south of Cartagena. These include the Isla del Rosario, Islas de San Bernardo, and Isla Fuerte.

    SOURCE: 1998 CIA WORLD FACTBOOK
Economy - overview Columbia is recovering from a short recession that began in late 1996 - resulting from tight monetary policy to drive down inflation, declining business confidence related to President SAMPER's political difficulties, and a slowdown in exports stemming from an appreciation of the peso and a recession in neighboring Venezuela. Although 1997's 3.1% GDP growth rate represented an improvement over 1996, it ranked among the lowest in Latin America and was substantially lower than the average annual growth rate exceeding 4% that Colombia posted for several decades prior to SAMPER's election. Colombia's next president will inherit a variety of economic problems. Most notably, the unemployment rate is at its highest level this decade, risks for the export sector and foreign investors are rising as a result of increasing guerrilla violence and a volatile exchange rate, and the fiscal deficit has more than tripled since 1994. GDP purchasing power parity - $231.1 billion (1997 est.)
