Christmas in Colombia, South America Christmas traditions in Colombia The main religion in Colombia is Roman Catholicism. This effects the way they celebrate Christmas. One common traditional way that Christmas is celebrated, the way Colombia is known to celebrate Christmas is similar to the United States but also different. Nine days before Christmas, parties and religous observances begin. On Christmas Eve, families gather together and eat a large dinner. They also pray around "el pesebre" (the nativity), sing Christmas carols and exchange gifts. On Christmas Day, children recieve gifts as did baby Jesus. Some even believe the gifts come from Jesus. An e-mail from a Colombian Christmas in Colombia: As in any catholic country Christmas is an important celebration both for the common people and for the establishment. Principal celebrations start on December 16 with the beginning of the "Novena", a kinds of nine day count down leading up to the 25th, Christmas eve. During these days people build altars in their homes with miniature figurines of the Christmas scene: The little hut with Joseph and Mary and the cradle which actually stays empty until Christmas Eve, when as part of the family celebration the little child Jesus is put into cradle. Of course there is special food for the gathering which usually reunites the entire family. Gifts are exchanged at midnight and the bigger cities put up some fireworks. I hope this will give you some help in your investigation. Geography of Colombia
World Facts Index Colombia Map of Colombia Located in the northwest corner of the South American continent, Colombia encompasses an area of more than 1.1 million square kilometers. It is the only country in South America with both Caribbean (1,760 kilometers) and Pacific coastlines (1,448 kilometers). Colombia also has international borders with five Latin American nations: Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. There were no major outstanding international boundary problems between Colombia and its neighbors in the late 1980s. All of the borders had long been delineated, and most had been demarcated by surveys and the placement of markers, although tropical jungle terrain and hostile Indians had impeded survey operations in some areas along the borders with Venezuela and Brazil. Colombia and Venezuela did, however, dispute sovereignty over the seabed in the Golfo de Venezuela, an area of potential petroleum wealth. In addition to its mainland territory, Colombia possesses a number of small islands in both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The combined areas of all these islands do not exceed sixtyfive square kilometers. In the Caribbean, off the coast of Nicaragua and 640 kilometers from the Colombian coast, Colombian territory includes an archipelago of thirteen small cays grouped around the Isla de San Andrés and the Isla de Providencia. Other small islands, cays, and banks in the same areawhich belong to Colombia but also are claimed by Nicaraguaare Isla de Santa Catalina, Cayos de Roncador, Banco de Quita Sueño, Banco de Serrana, and Banco de Serranilla. Several small islands also lie off Colombia's Caribbean coast south of Cartagena. These include the Isla del Rosario, Islas de San Bernardo, and Isla Fuerte.

    Colombia Economy
Colombia ended 1998 in recession with 0.2% GDP growth due to a combination of low world oil prices, reduced export demand, guerrilla violence, and diminished investment flows. The Central Bank resorted to interest rate hikes and tight monetary policy to defend the peso against pressure from Colombia's worsening trade and fiscal deficits. President PASTRANA'S well-respected financial team is working to deal with the myriad economic problems the country faces, including the highest unemployment level in decades and a fiscal deficit of close to 5% of GDP in 1998. The government implemented austerity measures, declared emergency measures to guard against a potential banking crisis resulting from the country's economic slowdown, and is seeking international assistance to fund a peace plan with the guerrillas. Guerrilla violence and low world oil prices will likely continue to undermine the economy in 1999. GDP: agriculture: industry: services: Population below poverty line: 17.7% (1992 est.)

    Flag of Colombia Background:
Colombia was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Ecuador and Venezuela).
A 40-year insurgent campaign to overthrow the Colombian Government escalated during the 1990s, undergirded in part by funds from the drug trade. Although the violence is deadly and large swaths of the countryside are under guerrilla influence, the movement lacks the military strength or popular support necessary to overthrow the government. While Bogota continues to try to negotiate a settlement, neighboring countries worry about the violence spilling over their borders.

Reporter Lisa Ling on Going Inside Colombia Drug War Brian Handwerk
    for National Geographic News
December 5, 2003 In the last three years, the United States has spent more than $2 billion dollars on a war that's surprisingly close to home. Colombia's battle against the illegal cocaine trade, as well as the drug producers and terrorist guerrillas it benefits, is a struggle for the soul of a country trying to emerge from 40 years of violence and unrest. National Geographic Ultimate Explorer host Lisa Ling investigated the Colombian cocaine story, sitting down with everyone from President Alvaro Uribe to impoverished coca farmers. Her report, The War Next Door, premieres this Sunday, December 7, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT. Ling spoke with National Geographic News reporter Brian Handwerk about her visit. Read the full National Geographic Ultimate Explorer host Lisa Ling met with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, went on a nerve-wracking helicopter raid, and chatted with small-time coca farmers and the law enforcement officers who battle against them. It all became part of her story on Colombia's U.S.-backed struggle against the lawlessness and violence spawned by the cocaine trade.
