Disabilities at the College Level
If you believe that you will need accommodations or modifications at Lafayette College, you must provide appropriate documentation that verifies the existence of the disability and discusses its impact on your ability to participate in the college environment. Requirements for appropriate documentation of learning disabilities, AD/HD, psychological disorders, and chronic health impairments are included in this website. Unlike the IDEA, which requires public schools to bear the cost of psycho-educational assessment as part of the process of identifying and servicing students with learning disabilities, the ADA places the responsibility for obtaining appropriate documentation of any and all disabilities on the student. Lafayette College reviews the documentation and decides whether or not the student is disabled under the ADA. The ADA does not require that colleges provide services or accommodations in the absence of a request by the student. This means that if you need an accommodation(s), you must initiate contact with the Office of the Dean of Studies, provide documentation verifying the need, and specifically request the accommodation(s). The request for accommodations must be renewed each semester. This is a new responsibility for most students, who have typically relied on their parents and their case managers or resource room teachers in high school to manage all their educational needs. In college, students with disabilities must assume full and independent responsibility for securing the services and accommodations they need.

1. Overall Policy and Approach

The College aims to provide a welcoming and friendly environment, which is supportive to both students, programme members and staff with disabilities. This is part of a wider commitment to equal opportunities.
2. Admission to Qualification Programmes Applications from people with disabilities will be considered against the same criteria as those from people without a disability applying for the same programme. Full consideration of the specific support facilities required will take place and the College will make every effort to effect reasonable adjustments in order to enable applicants to join the programme of their choice. Staff have been given guidelines to assist them in responding to applications from people who have a disability, and in giving advice to applicants with specific needs arising out of a disability. We therefore urge all applicants with special needs to identify their individual requirements as early as possible in the application process by ticking the relevant section of the application form, or by contacting the relevant member of staff (see list of contacts in Appendix 1). 3. Developing An Appropriate Individualized Educational Program (IEP)
A critical element of an effective high school program is determination of which curricula and courses will be taken by students with learning disabilities. Too often, these students are counseled into a general studies curriculum that will disqualify them from admission to most 4-year colleges. In addition, many students with learning disabilities receive course waiversoften for foreign language or mathematicswhich can significantly limit college options. Course waivers may be necessary and appropriate, but they should be provided only when based on valid diagnostic data. Furthermore, all parties should be made aware of the implications of waivers for postsecondary education. The individualized educational program or transition plan for a student with learning disabilities should provide for an early determination of postsecondary goals agreeable to all concerned and specification of the curriculum, courses, time sequence, and support program appropriate for realization of those long-term goals. The goals will require continual monitoring and adjustment throughout the high school program as the student's postsecondary and career choices become refined.

Introduction
Most people know, or are taught, at an early age, how to process information and develop an organized plan or strategy when confronted with a problem, whether that problem is social, academic, or job related. Others find such cognitive processes quite difficult. Learning disabilities have only recently been recognized as disabilities. This neurological disorder causes difficulty in organizing information received, remembering them, and expressing information and therefore affects a person's basic function such as reading, writing, comprehension, and reasoning. However, these students with learning disabilities can be taught effective learning strategies that will help them approach tasks more effectively. (From: Learning Strategies for Problem Learners, by Thomas Lombardi).

Chapter 13: Students with Special Physical or Medical Needs
Every semester, more than three hundred students enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill have some kind of documented disability, whether a physical disability, a learning disability, or a chronic medical condition. These disabilities may be temporary (such as trauma sustained during an accident) or permanent. Students with disabilities are expected to fulfill the same requirements as all other students admitted to UNC. However, depending on the nature of their disability, students with disabilities may need to modify how they fulfill those requirements. Students with either physical or learning disabilities have facilities on campus designed to aid them in their education at UNC. If you have students with disabilities in your classroom you may have some contact with these services and can take advantage of the assistance they offer:

This article briefly reviews Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and identi fies the criteria that are used to determine whether a student is both "disabled" and "qualified." Then, specific areas of admission, accommodation, and dismissal are examined. Finally, guidelines are presented that may be used by professors and administrators in their efforts to provide qualified students with disabilities with nondiscriminatory access to higher education.
Today, there are more students with documented disabilities in higher education than ever before 140,142 freshmen reported having a disability in 1996 (HEATH Resource Center, 1998). That figure represents over 9% of all freshmen (HEATH Resource Center, 1998), as compared with only 2.6% in 1978 (HEATH Resource Center, 1995). Although the process has been slow, colleges and universities (hereafter referred to as
