http://subsites.canadorec.on.ca/specialneeds/lotf.html
From 1998 - 2002 Canadore College participated in a partnership with Loyalist College Nipissing University , and Trent University , setting up the Virtual Centre of Excellence in Learning Disability Integration to help students with specific learning disabilities who decided to study at the post-secondary level.
The Learning Opportunities Task Force (LOTF)
This pilot program, created with the assistance of the Learning Opportunities Task Force and the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities , had the primary goal of empowering students with learning disabilities with the skills necessary to develop personally, academically and professionally to their highest potential. Begun in the fall of 1998 and continuing until June 2002, it accommodated a total of 25 students (per institution) and provided them with an increased level of support services. By tracking the progress of students admitted to the LOTF project, the partner institutions determined exactly which support services listed below worked best for learning disabled students.

Students were encouraged to confidentially self-identify their disability to the Special Needs office. This was done by completing and submitting a self-identification form along with the most recent psycho-educational assessment. A completed

Would Your Child With a Disability Like to Attend College? Reprinted from Connecting , RAISING Special Kids, 4750 North Black Canyon Hwy., Phoenix, AZ 85017-3621 A ttending college or university can be a natural next step for students leaving high school. It may also make sense for your son or daughter for academic or social or experiential reasons. Some students with disabilities may go on to a degree; others may not, similar to the typical college population. So, if your child has expressed such an interest and you think it offers possibilities, where do you start? Gather information on the options from the community college system to a university system to specialized programs [for students with disabilities]. You and your student should do a campus tour or otherwise visit the school. Check out a copy of the schedule of classes and other relevant publications. Once you’ve decided the school, it’s time for working through the admission process. Most campuses give students an opportunity to identify themselves as having a disability at some point during the admissions process. There may be a place to check on the application blank, or with the information sent to you AFTER your acceptance, concerning housing, athletic events, etc. If the college invites students to identify themselves as a student with a disability and in need of accommodation, it is to their advantage to let them know as quickly and completely as possible.

Resources for Students with Disabilities in Need of Financial Assistance
Introduction
Paying for college is difficult at best, The Center has collected some resources we hope will assist parents of students with disabilities and the students themselves. This page is devoted to resources for disabled students in need of financial aid. At the moment it is centered around the U. S. We would like to gather information for students from all over the world. If you have other resources please let us know by contacting us at: icdri@icdri.org Or you may fill out a registration form and we will include the resource as soon as possible. A special thanks to the members of our advisory board who contributed these links and did the research. You might also want to visit our Books section or take a look at the following book sections below: Most colleges and Universities in the U. S. have a disability office as part of the student services organization. So check with each school that you or you child wishes to attend to see what each school has as well.

Unfortunately, the entrance to the Main Library is not accessible for people in wheelchairs or with mobility problems (there are two flights of stairs to mount). There is, however, an alternative entrance. This can be found on the first floor of the south end or "wing" of the same building, where there is a lift to take you to the correct level. The door to this alternative entrance is operated by an entryphone and keypad system. The entryphone should ensure you are let in whenever the Issue Desk is open . However, if you are going to be a regular user of this entrance to the Library, you can obtain the keypad password. As such we are in a position to be able to consider the needs of each student on an individual basis. We don't have the full range of support for students with disabilities that you would expect to find in a larger institution, but we're able to be flexible and responsive to the needs of individual students. Our policy is to provide opportunities for every student with disabilities, to discuss their needs with informed staff before applying and if successful, throughout your time at the College. In response to these identified needs we'll endeavour to provide all reasonable support and facilities and to develop strategies that maximise the potential for every student to succeed. Student Welfare Officer We encourage you to contact the Student Welfare Officer to discuss your special needs if you have a disability or learning difficulty that you think may affect your decision about applying for or taking up a place at Ravensbourne. We guarantee that disclosing a disability or learning difficulty will not disadvantage your application. It will enable us to make arrangements to provide for your needs, as far as possible and reasonable. The Student Welfare Officer can arrange for you to discuss your needs with the course leader or any other relevant member of staff as appropriate.

Increasing numbers of students with learning disabilities are enrolling in two and four-year colleges and universities. Since 1985, among first-time, full-time freshmen who reported having any disability, the percentage of those with learning disabilities doubled from 15 percent to 32 percent. Currently nearly a third of all freshmen with disabilities report having learning disabilities. Some of the most frequently asked questions of the HEATH staff are about students with learning disabilities who are preparing to make the transition from high school to college. In addition, HEATH staff are asked many questions by students with learning disabilities who plan to enroll in graduate school, including law school and medical school. Such questions indicate that students with learning disabilities can, and do have successful undergraduate experiences. High school students with learning disabilities who are considering going to college should be encouraged to pursue this goal. Students should be aware that colleges and universities are not all alike Their missions or purposes, entrance criteria, programs of study, and requirements for certifications, associate degrees, and baccalaureate degrees vary. Similarly, students with learning disabilities are not all alike. Their goals, strengths and weaknesses vary. Also, people change their minds plans and goals change over time. The student who enrolls in a vocational certification program in a two-year community college today may be the student who completes a baccalaureate degree program in a four-year university tomorrow.
