What do I need to know about the country I'm traveling to?

What do I need to know about the country I'm traveling to? It never hurts to know a bit about the place you're going to work or study. Before you go it will be very helpful to learn a bit about the culture and traditions of your destination, and think about the things you'd like to see and learn about while abroad. You may want to head over to a bookstore or a library and pick up a guidebook on the country or region that you'll be traveling to. There are a number of different guides, such as the Fodor's guides, the Lonely Planet series, and Rick Steves' travel guides, that are reliable and helpful for students traveling abroad. The U.S. State Department also provides useful information. Go online to

Become a Citizen of the World The world is getting smaller. How much of it would you like to see? International study is a way of life at Centre. About 75% of all Centre graduates now study abroad, putting Centre in the top 10 of the 3,500 colleges and universities in the country. What makes Centre's programs different from those at other colleges and universities is that a Centre faculty member with significant knowledge of that region of the world lives at the site, teaching and coordinating special trips and other activities. Centre operates residential sites for its own students in England (London), France (in Strasbourg, across the Rhine River from Germany), and Latin America (in Merida, Mexico). We also have exchange programs with schools in Japan and Northern Ireland. Some Centre students study at the University of Reading (near London) each year, as well. More than 100 Centre students each year spend a term or more at one of these sites. The costs for these programs are essentially the same as studying in Danville. (Students do pay their own airfare.) In addition, many Centre professors offer shorter, more focused trips during the short

Taking Wells Global We are witnessing the emergence of a global society where quality of life is greatly enriched by cross-cultural understanding and experience. The movement toward a "global village" will only increase in the years ahead, and Wells is educating students now to live and work successfully in this new world. The foundation of the Wells curriculum is the liberal arts, and study of other countries and cultures is a long-standing part of this tradition. Today, exciting options are available in eight European countries, West Africa, Australia and Japan, but Wells students can also choose to study at other locations. They can explore international law, communications, psychology, and environmental economics, in addition to cultural studies and languages Wells offers. After at least one semester at Wells, a student's financial aid applies for one semester of study for affiliated programs, listed below, that are an integral part of the major field or certification. Approximately 30% of Wells students study abroad through affiliated programs across the globe. They return with a fresh perspective on their own culture and lifestyles. Have you always dreamed of traveling to cool places, meeting lots of different people, and maybe picking up a language or two? No matter what country you live in, you can fly over the world's highest waterfalls in Venezuela, learn world trade in Japan, study in France, or take dancing lessons in Ghana. How? In a study abroad program , where high school and college students live with a host family in a foreign country. Semester and year-long programs allow you to attend school, join in optional extracurricular activities , take intensive language courses, and perform community service in another country. Imagine earning school credit for projects like protecting Panama's coral reefs or helping with cattle and agricultural projects in the Bolivian Amazon. Read on to learn more about study abroad programs. Why Would You Want to Study Abroad?
Besides the excitement of travel, one reason to study abroad is that you will experience first-hand new customs, holidays, foods, art, music, and politics. "Obviously, I learned the language and am now fluent, but perhaps more importantly was how much I learned about cultures, people, and myself. . . . I learned this from the viewpoint of an active member of the community and my [host] family, not from the tourist's point of view," says Andrew Lefkowits of Denver, Colorado, who studied in Poitiers, France. Studying in a new country can change your perspective much more than a 2-week vacation abroad.
