“Studying abroad is the best way for us to learn how to interact with people of different cultures in a setting that is not our own, and be open to new ways of thinking and living…France was everything I expected it to be and more. Freshly baked baguettes, warm “4 kiss” salutes, narrow, beautiful streets filled with history and an incredible sense of nationalism.” - Jennifer, Visual Arts major “This land (Italy) was made by loving hands over thousands of years.” - Roel, Dance major Study abroad can be one of the most rewarding experiences of a student’s life. Experiencing another culture and language and seeing an unknown part of the world while gaining a new perspective on an area of study can be life changing. Equally importantly, students can gain a new perspective on the United States by seeing it from a foreign vantage point. And without question, students will gain insight into their studies at Purchase College. In addition, experience abroad may open new and unexpected doors upon graduation and thereafter. On campus, visit the study abroad library in Campus Center South Room 3008 to research options available around the world, or attend the study abroad fair in the fall or one of the numerous information sessions. We would be happy to advise you, make recommendations and help you plan for your sojourn abroad. Chronicle of Higher Education The Chronicle of Higher Education , the No. 1 news source for college and university faculty members and administrators, reported findings from a study that shows Eckerd College ranked #1 for the highest proportion of baccalaureate students who study abroad during their undergraduate career. Eckerd College topped the list of U.S. colleges and universities with an impressive 123.6% of its students studying abroad. Participation in study abroad exceeded 100% due to the number of Eckerd students that enroll for multiple study abroad trips. The ranking was the result of a report published by NAFSA: Association of International Educators. It urges the federal government to create programs to triple the number of U.S. students studying abroad. The report follows on the heels of a study released by the American Council on Education that found that while more colleges require foreign language courses, most do not provide their students with a truly international education. At Eckerd College, international education and study abroad are integral to a liberal arts education. This commitment is expressed in the mission of the college and, in 1960, the 4-1-4 academic calendar was specifically designed to create a time for students to study a single topic, often abroad. This calendar has become a model for other institutions throughout the country. Eckerd also provides semester, full year, and winter term programs for student participation.

By combining the intellectual breadth of the liberal arts with the more pragmatic concerns of public affairs, Claremont McKenna College helps students acquire the vision, skills, and values they will need to lead society. -CMC Catalog In today's complex and interdependent world nearly every issue, from trade to environmental problems, carries a global dimension. CMC is strongly committed to educating future leaders for whom the need for global expertise is unparalleled today. Heeding the call to begin preparing for borderless careers, 58% of the class of 2002 spent a semester or full year studying abroad. Study abroad allows students to expand their education and to acquire an international perspective needed to function in a global society. Study abroad alumni report a greater sensitivity to global issues and a deeper understanding of the challenges facing us in the Twenty-First century. Many students are also bewildered at how much they learned about the United States while they were away. Fougeret de Monbron said it best when in 1761 he wrote:

Academics
Study Abroad Lake Forest College believes deeply in the value of studying abroad, and many students pursue such study, especially during the junior year. Lake Forest College endorses the following outcomes for all study-abroad programs in which our students participate:
  • A challenging academic experience, which includes in-class and related out-of-class learning, such as academically oriented excursions. Increased cultural awareness through immersion, which provides for and encourages regular contact with host country representatives. Personal growth, which includes taking responsibility in an unfamiliar context such as navigating a new geographical space, deciphering cultural interactions, and improving language skills. Reflection and articulation of self-knowledge, which provides evidence or demonstration that students have reflected on their experience abroad, processed the other cultural perspective(s) gleaned from the experience, and compared these perspectives with American and/or other cultural perspectives. This may take place through the exercise of e-journals, participation in the Global Responsibilities Student Symposium, visits to classes, writing articles, taking a post-experience course, or by other means.
To facilitate the above outcomes, an on-site coordinator will play a critical role in creating the structure necessary for growth and providing a point of contact for dealing with cross-cultural issues and aspects of orientation to the host culture(s).
