Studying abroad is popular option among Minnesota college students
Mary Jane Smetanka, Star Tribune December 3, 2003 Editor's note: A story on Wednesday said incorrectly that St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., sent a higher percentage of its students abroad in 2001-02 than any other baccalaureate college in the nation. St. Olaf sent the highest number of students abroad. Minnesota college students may be smack in the middle of the continent and far from oceans, but they're not shy about spending part of their college years abroad. St. Olaf College in Northfield, which has emphasized international study for more than a half century, sent more students abroad in 2001-02 than any other baccalaureate institution in the nation, according to a recent report by the Institute of International Education. St. Olaf has held that top spot since at least the mid-1990s.

They now walked on in silence; each of them deep in thought. Elizabeth was not comfortable; that was impossible; but she was flattered and pleased. . . . He then asked her to walk into the housebut she declared herself not tired, and they stood together on the lawn. At such a time, much might have been said, and silence was very awkward. She wanted to talk, but there seemed an embargo on every subject. At last she recollected that she had been travelling . . . Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice Over the years many Smith English majors have spent all or part of their junior years (occasionally, part of their senior years) abroad. Most, predictably, have attended universities in England, Scotland, or Ireland, but some have chosen Smith's own programs in Paris, Hamburg, Florence, or Geneva, and a few hardy travelers have ventured as far as Australia. Coming back to Northampton, our English majors have almost invariably reported favorably on their experiencesand they have been able to apply credits earned abroad to the English Department requirements with relative ease (see below). How do you choose where to go? Smith's list of approved institutions currently lists twenty-two in England, six in Scotland, one in Wales, four in the Republic of Ireland, one in Northern Ireland, eight in Australia, and one in New Zealand. Even if we disregard a few of these as being unlikely destinations for English majors (the London School of Economics, the Laban Dance Centre), there are still many possibilities. At present, the English Department publishes no officially recommended list of its ownthough perhaps in the fullness of time it will; we are interested in making sure that our majors have the best possible educational experiences abroad, and we hope to begin evaluating (in a modest way) the various universities' programs.

http://studyabroad.business.uiuc.edu/
The College of Business is seriously committed to preparing students to work and compete in an international business environment. To that end, we are designing new courses and other study opportunities that have an international focus. These courses will enable us to offer international tracks for undergraduate students in the College. We also strongly support foreign language study and participation in a study abroad program. Indeed, we believe that a study abroad experience should be an integral part of international business study.
The opportunities for study abroad are many. In addition to programs sponsored by our College, the University of Illinois has Exchange Program Agreements with over 100 institutions worldwide. Students have the option of studying abroad for a summer, a semester, or the entire academic year. Most students study abroad in their junior year; however, with proper planning, students are able to participate in an exchange program anytime after they have completed one year of coursework on the Urbana campus. Saint Mary's College views studying abroad as a rewarding educational and cross-cultural experience. It furnishes qualified students the opportunity to participate meaningfully in another culture. Various study abroad options for Saint Mary's student reflect different purposes and different academic commitment.
  • January Term travel classes are not open to all students and allow for one month of guided travel and study abroad.
  • Summer study or travel abroad requires minimal preparation and can be acceptable for limited college course credit.
  • Formal enrollment for one semester or year abroad is more challenging and requires more preparation than the January Term or summer study experience.
Saint Mary's students study abroad at numerous foreign universities with programs in Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia. Saint Mary's is a member of the Council on International Education and Exchange, which has programs in Argentina, China, the Czech Republic, Ghana, Korea, Russia, Vietnam, and a number of other countries. Some of the programs have special emphases such as the Tropical Biology program in Costa Rica or the Spanish Mediterranean Language and Area Studies at the University of Alicante.
