    The First College Magazines
The first Queens' College magazine, which appeared in 1904, was entitled The Green Bore (no doubt a reference to the College colours and the silver boar's head badge of Richard III). It was edited and mostly written by a student named F W M Draper who was at Queens' from 1901-04 and later taught at Mill Hill. It would seem this publication was short lived and unfortunately no copies have survived in the College or University archives, so nothing is known of its form or content. The Green Bore clearly left a void, for early in the Lent Term 1905 the Chaplain of Queens', the Revd C T Wood (later Dean 1907-40) wrote to the President of the St Bernard Society, the College debating society, suggesting a College Magazine. The suggestion was so well-received that it was put to the vote and The Queens' Courier was born. Volume 1 No. 1 appeared on 15 March 1906 edited by a "somewhat reluctant committee" of one undergraduate from each year reinforced by a don (Mr A B Cook, later Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology) "to act as a check upon possible indiscretion or heedlessness". The first editorial hopes "that we shall supply, successfully, both the serious and the comic element so desired by a College citizen in a record of College life". "In entering upon a task like this we have many models before us to point out the way in which our halting feet should tread. But we hope that we shall not be dubbed ambitious when we say that our Pegasus does not quite approve of any of these oft traversed paths to fame. "

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—The Middlebury College alumni magazine was awarded the gold medal for best college and university general interest magazine by the Washington, D.C.-based Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Awards are presented annually in three subcategories organized by the size of a magazine’s circulation. With a circulation of more than 42,000, the Middlebury Magazine competed against 41 other entries with circulations of 30,000-75,000. For the last seven out of nine years, Middlebury Magazine has placed among the top three in the country in CASE’s general interest magazine category, which considers all aspects of a magazine—content, writing, editing, layout, design, photography, print quality and budget. Judges also evaluate how well the magazine communicates with its audience and reflects an understanding of it. The 2004 award is the second gold medal the magazine has received. The magazine also won a merit award from the Society of Publication Designers for an image by New York City-based photographer Bob Handelman of Middlebury College students playing water polo, which appeared in the fall 2003 issue. Middlebury Magazine was one of only five college and university magazines recognized in a field dominated by more than 100 commercial titles such as National Geographic and Vanity Fair.

College magazines go hi-tech College magazines have begun to sport a chic look. What do magazine editors in the city colleges have to say about this image make-over? MOST PEOPLE used to keep their college magazines in some remote corner of the bookshelf earlier, but not anymore. For, these days, college magazines are no longer mere souvenirs kept on the same rack along with old autograph books and faded group photos the dusty reminders of college life. The magazines have found a pride of place among the student community thanks to the hip look it has currently begun to sport. The chic look owes itself to the wave of creativity, which is sweeping across the city campuses in the form of campus films and theatre works. College magazines have, for long, provided campus folks with an opportunity to express their views on issues of social relevance. They have often reflected the campus psyche. Today, these magazines sport a glossy look - courtesy advanced technology and sophisticated equipment. Editing and layout, the two main features in the making of a magazine, have become child's play due to desk top publishing (DTP).

Knox Writing Program GALESBURG For the second time this year, Knox College's student literary journal, Catch, has won a top national award. The journal has won a 2003 Magazine Pacemaker Award from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP), one of the highest honors in the field of student journalism. The ACP awards to Catch and eight other college magazines, announced recently on the ACP website, will be formally presented in November at the ACP National College Media Convention in Nashville. Last October, Catch won the top national award for content from the Association of Writers and Writing Programs. "Winning two different top national awards back-to-back is a testament to the incredible strength of the creative arts programs at Knox," said Monica Berlin, assistant professor of English and Catch's faculty advisor. "These two issues had different editors and different contributors, which says a lot about the consistent excellence of Catch and of our students." The issue of Catch that received the ACP award was published in the fall of 2002. The 140-page magazine included works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, photography, ceramics, paintings, drawings, music, a fabric construction, and a site-specific installation.
