Winter 2004:
The Ethics of the War on Terrorism
This year's Public Affairs Symposium is titled "Clash of Civilizations: Culture, War and Globalization." In the post 9-11 world, we must reconsider the role the United States should play in world affairs and our relationships with other nations.
As part of this reconsideration, we invite comments on the hard choices that must be made in a war on terrorism. Consider the different points of view and then join our discussion
Summer 2003:
The Real State of the Union
This year's Common Reading for incoming freshmen is a series of articles entitled "The Real State of the Union." The report appeared in the January-February 2003 issue of The Atlantic Monthly and was prepared in partnership with the New America Foundation, a nonpartisan public-policy think tank.
It consists of essays on major aspects of the nation's domestic health, including specific and practical suggestions for improvement. Topics include the economy, race relations, the environment and health care.
Spring 2003:
Diversity and Affirmative Action
Lawsuits brought on behalf of white applicants to the University of Michigan contend that the University's admissions policies, which consider race as a factor, are not legal. The Bush administration supports these lawsuits, while Michigan and other schools say that it is proper to consider the race of qualified students in order to create an ethnically diverse learning environment.

Coaching College Students with AD/HD : Issues and Answers > Customer Review #1: A MUST for ADD Coaches!

This book is an absolute must for EVERY ADD Coach, whether they work with college students or not!
What makes this book so valuable is that it is not just a lot of theory. It is nitty-gritty coaching technique at its best. The various issues that face ADD college students are examined closely, then specific recommendations are made about how the coach can help the student/client. Examples of check-ins are provided along with step-by-step outlines that take the coach through the important points. Not only is this essential for coaches who work with ADD college students, but it is also extremely valuable for anyone who coaches people with ADD/ADHD. The introductory material makes it clear that this book is not meant to take the place of coach training, but this reviewer believes that this should be an essential text book for all ADD coaches. The authors have done us an invaluable service.

The Internet revolution arrived faster, and with more complications, than many academic institutions expected. The rapid development of search engines and the expanded use of the Web by all types of organizations increased the demand for Internet-related services on college campuses. To assess the impact of these changes, a questionnaire was mailed to selected computer center directors listed in the 1998 Higher Education Directory (U.S.). The questionnaire asked respondents various institutional demographic questions and how Internet access is provided to students, faculty, administrators, and staff. The paper presents survey results in text and graphical format. The paper includes graphs that display the rates of increases (or decrease) regarding access and usage of e-mail, the World Wide Web, telnet and other Internet features. Comparisons, where appropriate, are made between public and private institutions. Respondents also provided information on access issues, access policy development, and policy deployment. URLs are given for several academic Internet use policies. Specific concerns and issues dealing with access are listed. The authors provide recommendations for policy formulation and dissemination.

While the roots of the (often strained) relationships between high schools and colleges go back two centuries or more, the closer collaboration required for successful partnerships is a relatively recent phenomenon.
