BC College of Teachers
BC College of Teachers becomes BC College Against Teachers
On May 12, 2003, the Minister of Education tabled Bill 51, the Teaching Profession Amendment Act, 2003 Education Minister Christy Clark claimed to be giving parents greater clout in complaining about teachers, but her changes are essentially cosmetic and may do more to frustrate parents than assist them. In her news release and backgrounder issued May 12th, the minister is quoted as saying "there is no mechanism for the public to directly make a complaint to the college regarding a teacher's conduct." The statement is false. Parents have always had the ability to go to the college with any complaints. Bill 51 will not help parents because it will add another layer of bureaucracy to the problem-solving process. Involving the college will prolong and escalate issues that could be settled quite readily at the school level. A survey of the composition of other professional colleges in B.C. In rationalizing the introduction of Bill 51, the minister of education called into question the tradition of teacher unionism and professionalism . However, this issue was thoroughly examined by B.C.'s Sullivan Royal Commission on Education. This commission concluded that, "Put simply, a 'union of professionals' is not a contradiction in terms. Professionals of all types are included in bargaining units."

informal education in schools and colleges
In recent years there has been a significant growth in the numbers of informal educators working in formal educational settings like schools and colleges. We explore the phenomenon – and some of the possibilities and problems involved.
contents: introduction recent developments in school and college policy and practice the decline in classroom teachers' involvement in informal education - and the rise of the specialist the extension of curricular activity and the focus on outcome ... links There has been a significant growth in the numbers of informal educators working within schools and colleges in Britain. As we will see, three factors have been especially significant: The narrowing of the focus of classroom teachers and lecturers particularly as they deal with increased workloads and the national curriculum A growing belief in the need to attend to learning beyond the classroom if educational achievement is to rise and if people's orientation and skill base is to remain relevant to the economy (e.g. Bentley 1998; Leadbeater 2000). An aspect of this has been the growth in use of problematic notions such as lifelong learning A desire to ensure that school and college life is marked by reasonable behaviour and is attractive to potential students and their parents.

What's New Press Room NOW Times NOW PACs ... Search Tips Send or Print this page The Sexual Victimization of College Women March 7, 2002 by Cindy Hanford, Web Writer "I felt betrayed, because I went to the university seeking help, and in the end, they basically did nothing about what happened to me," a female college student told The Washington Post this week. "All I wanted was for him to be kicked out of school so I could try to move on with my life and not have to see him." This recent sexual assault case at Catholic University in DC illustrates the problems faced by women on college campuses when universities attempt to adjudicate violent crime as if it were academic cheating. A board of three Catholic University officials observed while the 18-year-old woman had the harrowing experience of confronting her attacker with graphic details about what happened and of being questioned by him. The board found that the male student had sexually assaulted his classmate while she was intoxicated, but his only punishment was to lose his housing privileges for a short time. Meanwhile, the woman feels she cannot return to school there in the fall. According to a federal study, about three percent of college women are sexually attacked and thirteen percent are stalked during an academic year. "The Sexual Victimization of College Women" was released last year by the U.S. Justice Department's National Institute of Justice and Bureau of Justice Statistics. The report is based on interviews with 4,446 college women (employing a nationally representative sample) and examines the frequency and nature of sexual assault on college campuses in the United States.
