Social Issues Unfortunately, this is one of the most difficult categories of questions to write about. Admissions officers are looking for your take on age-old problems, such as racism, poverty, and world hunger, as well more publicized current issues, such as business ethics, the impact of technology upon society, and the rapid spread of AIDS across the globe. The tragic events of September 11, 2001, gave special meaning to this category, as applicants were asked to discuss issues that hit closer to home that most of us ever expected.

Program Description
The Program focuses on the effect which the emergence of modern social science has had on the study of the human experience. Disciplines such as anthropology, economics, political science, psychology and sociology have had an enormous impact on the way informed people now approach the issues of meaning and purpose in human existence. Yet these sciences have also tended to dismiss some questions and concerns in those same areas as misguided or unimportant. The Program invites the student to consider the benefits and the hazards of this intellectual development, as well as contemporary and historical alternatives to its vision. In size and curriculum, the program is designed to enable a small number of students to have an enriched educational experience. It employs educational methods that enable student to refine their ability to read, think, write and speak effectively. Classes are limited in size; communication and research skill are actively cultivated; and the courses complement one another in a way that encourages the ongoing study of issues that are of particular interest to the student.

Updated: March 2003 Colleges and Universities Issue Description Information and recommendations regarding college admissions and financial aid requirements and preparing your homeschool student for college. Issue Background For several years, the Home School Legal Defense Association has been working on state and federal issues to improve admission procedures for homeschoolers at colleges and universities across the country. In 1996 HSLDA conducted a nationwide college survey sampling the homeschool admissions policies in all 50 states. This survey revealed that although many colleges eagerly accepted homeschoolers, just as many had not formulated any policies regarding homeschool admission, and were confused about the legal issues involved. This was compounded by the fact that homeschooled students could not get Federal financial aid without obtaining a GED or state-certified diploma. Therefore, the Association drafted federal legislation to place homeschool college applicants for admissions and financial aid on the same footing as traditional applicants. This language was included in The Higher Education Act Amendments of 1998 (Pub. L. No. 105-244) and changed what post-secondary schools could require of homeschool applicants. These new guidelines, however, have only slowly reached local financial aid offices, and HSLDA has recently been heavily involved in educating these offices on the documentation homeschoolers can be required to give for financial aid.
