COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS A.C.T.-American College Testing The American College Testing program began in 1959. In 1999, over 1 2 million students have taken the tes this year. It is accepted by 85% of all colleges/universities across the United States. The four tests administered in English, Reading, Mathematics and Science give students a composite or average score between 1 and 36. Each test is weighted equally. Average scores are between 17 and 23. All colleges/universities in Michigan accept the ACT as an entrance exam. The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor prefers that students achieve a composite score of 25 or above for acceptance in most programs, and it has the most rigorous admissions criteria in the State of Michigan. Most guidance counselors in Michigan recommend that students take the ACT towards the end of their Junior year in high school so they can take as much Math, Science and English as possible prior to submitting their 6 semester transcript to colleges/universities. Students may re-test as many times as they wish; 77% scored at or above their previous score; 24% scored 1 point higher, 22% scored exactly the same, 18% scored 2 points higher, 15% scored 3 or more points higher, 13% scored 1 point lower, 6% scored 2 points lover and 2% scored 3 or more points lower. The PLAN is a practice test for the ACT and is generally given to 10th grade students for a fee of $8 each fall; it was formerly called the P-ACT. Students who take the PLAN test in the State of Michigan score 1.8 points higher on the ACT Composite than non-PLAN test takers.

College Entrance Exams Do I really have to take a test to get into college? The answer is, in most cases, yes! You can get ready by taking the PSAT/NMSQT in 10th and 11th grade. The test will provide you with an indication of how you will do on the Sat and possibly qualify you for a national college scholarship. Toward the end of your junior year and in senior year the SAT I and/or ACT should be taken. The best time to take the SAT II (subject tests), if required, is as soon as you have completed the course. See your counselor for specifics regarding the college entrance and placement exams. Maine South CRC - Entrance Exams COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS What are these tests? The ACT, SAT I, and SAT II are tests used by colleges in combination with your class rank, high school curriculum, recommendations and sometimes essays, to determine the probability of your success at their college and therefore your acceptance to their institution. Sometimes your score determines placement in college courses. Most colleges will accept either the ACT or the SAT, but one should check. The tests are offered several Saturday mornings a year and may be taken more than once. Test registration packets are available in the CRC and are to be mailed by you to complete your registration. ACT scores range from 1-36. The test has four parts: English, math, reading, and science reasoning. There is a composite score but one receives 11 sub-scores broken down by subject areas. 98% of the Midwest colleges, including Oakton and Triton, prefer the ACT results. Most public schools prefer the ACT. Calculators are permitted on the math test but not on the science test. Pick-up registration forms in the CRC or register online at www.act.org

    The Associated Press
IOWA CITY, Iowa Hunkered down in a windowless conference room, five scholars analyzed a high school student's essay with a scrutiny normally reserved for the likes of Hemingway or Dickens.
"We need to be more forgiving about the endings," counseled Roseanne Cook, a program manager for the ACT, examining the handwritten pages. "We need to recognize what happens when they run out of time, or what happens when the proctor says there are only three minutes remaining."
Cook and the ACT certainly know something about deadlines.
The clock has been ticking down for the testing service since last year, when the ACT announced that it would add an optional essay to the second-most popular college entrance exam in the nation starting in spring 2005.
Since then, test-makers on ACT's leafy campus have been working on the painstaking task of crafting precise, thoughtful questions that will inspire great writing from America's teenagers. The researchers also are figuring out how to grade an exam for hundreds of thousands of students that is not multiple choice.

    This Week's Current
The Classroom Flyer Life Science Biology ... Sports Acing the College Entrance Essay Rule #1: Be Yourself Newspapers report that anxious high school seniors are paying hundreds of dollars for professional help with their college entrance exams. Some students even pull ready-made essays from the Internet. They might be surprised to learn that admissions officials are tired of reading polished essays that all sound vaguely the same. What kind of essay will convince a college official that a student is worthy of admission? The purpose of a college application essay is twofold, says Paul Raccanello, a college admissions officer at Dominican University of California. First, a college wants "to get an idea of who you are as a student, what you're bringing to the college, what qualities you bring to our university. The second part is more for us to see what you can do with your writing. Are you ready for college-level work, can you write a clear, concise, structured essay based on the questions that we ask?" Admissions officers read numerous entrance essays in a short period of time. Time restrictions force them to devote just a few minutes to each essay. The ability to be creative is paramount. While awards and community service stints are valuable experiences, students shouldn't feel restricted to such subjects. What college admission officers really want to see is originality and creativity. They want to know what makes a student tick.

    Description of College Entrance Exams
Performing well on the SAT I and ACT is highly responsive to reading widely, taking solid academic courses, and preparing responsibly. Problem-solving and reasoning comprise the core of both tests. The college counseling office and the computer lab provide materials which should help students become familiar with the tests. 1. PSAT/NMSQT - Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (College Board Test Program) Given in October (during school hours at SPA) to Sophomores and Juniors. Same format as SAT I: Reasoning Test. Useful as an indicator of probable SAT I scores and/or test practice. The junior score also is the basis for selection for some merit scholarships including the National Merit Program. All juniors who are US citizens or permanent residents are eligible for National Merit Scholarships. Semi-finalists are notified in the fall of their senior year. Students may elect to have their scores and other information shared with colleges to obtain college brochures and information. PSAT scores are not part of the college application. 2. Cameron University administers the ACT five test dates per year and Lawton High School offers two ACT tests as well. Cameron also gives the SAT on three datesNovember, January and March. Any other SAT national test date would have to be taken out-or-town. Students must be registered for these tests at least six weeks in advance of the testing dates. Registration packets for both the Act and SAT are available in die Guidance Office. Students with documented special testing needs or fee waivers should contact their counselors early in the school year for further information. For those special needs students who qualify for extra time, three national test dates are offered through the ACT -October, December and April. See the counselor for the extra forms to be included in the application. Students do not have to take both the ACT and the SAT. Most colleges will accept either. Oklahoma schools prefer the ACT. If attending colleges in the East or West, the SAT is preferred. in the Midwest and South, the ACT is preferred. ACT (American College Testing)
The ACT is a three hour multiple-choice test measuring achievement in four areas: English, math, reading and science reasoning. Each sub-test yields a score of 1-36. A composite score is derived from averaging the four sub-tests and is reported on a scale of 1-36.

College entrance exams . Rant. Kids these days are expected to take the PSAT in their junior year to qualify for National Merit honors. SAT in the spring of their junior year for the first time. Followed by prep work, and then the SAT again in the fall of their senior year. AP tests for appropriate classes at the end of their junior year, which could mean as many as 4 more tests. SAT II tests in 3 subject areas at the end of their junior year, followed by retesting in their senior year if they feel appropriate. Some people recommend the ACT test as well as it biases in slightly different directions. Issue A. The amount of time and work spent on these tests is huge. And if you want to do any prep at all, it really eats up time. Issue B. The notion that a small set of numbers somehow measures a person's potential is of course nuts. Each of these tests also has all kinds of scoring options extra cost options for faster score reporting, more detailed reporting.
