1. If x + 6 = 9, then 3x + 1 = ? Answer choices: (A) 3 (B) 9 (C) 10 (D) 34 (E) 46 Let’s think it through. Choice A is to tempt you into a quick (wrong) decision. When you solve for x in the first equation (x + 6 = 9) you get 3, which is choice A.
But that is not the question. You must go on to the second part of the question (3x + 1 = ?) Always be careful on two-part questions. Substitute 3 for the x in the 2nd equation. 3x + 1 = ?. Therefore,
Choice C is the correct answer. 2. If x > 1, which of the following decreases as x decreases?
III. 1
x + 1 The easiest way to solve this problem is to work from the answers, eliminating the wrong answers. Substitute a simple number you can work with quickly. Again, this does what the questions asks. We can see that x decreases when x is decreased. 3. Barney can mow the lawn in 5 hours, and Fred can mow the lawn in 4 hours. How long will it take them to mow the lawn together?

College Entrance Exams Juniors should register for and take the ACT and/or SAT in the spring of their junior year. Registration materials will be given to juniors in their English classes, or they can be picked up any time in the WHS Student Services Center. Exams can be taken a number of times and the highest score will be accepted by the colleges. Many students take the exams over in their senior year. Students who feel that they have not achieved their highest score should consider taking the exam over again. Many scholarships are tied to test scores and a score increase of even one point on the ACT could mean winning a scholarship. Mrs. Mesman will be providing college prep material in junior English classes 4 times per year to explain the process of opportunities after high school. Registration for the exams can be done on line as well as through the mail. Article Summary
The ACT and SAT are two college entrance exams used by many colleges in the United States to make admission decisions about who will and will not be accepted into college. Fuller & Wehman (2003) report, “ Accommodations to students with disabilities have evolved over the years into four broad categories generally accepted and available on both the ACT and SAT, although there are variations within the two companies." The accommodation classes include:
  • extended time, alternative format, alternative location, and adaptive equipment.

http://www.inaflash.com/about_general.asp
Doing Well On Your College Entrance Exams Is Important Many experts recommend taking both the ACT and SAT I. Because both tests have important differences, some students find they get a much better score on one than the other. These students can then make use of the better of the two results in their applications for admission and scholarships. The PSAT, a preparatory test for underclassmen, is given only in October and is the only criteria for the awarding of National Merit Scholarships. Sophomores and juniors who do well on this test could be eligible to receive thousands of dollars under that program.
"My score improved 180 points!" "I have taken the SAT four times and I only had the ‘In-a-Flash Cards’ in time for the last two tests. When I received the scores from my last two SATs I saw that my score had improved by 200 points." Michael

SATs and ACT scores are the one way colleges are able to evaluate all applicants on an even playing field, so to speak. It is the same test administered to all students at the same time and the scores help colleges compare one student against another (much easier to do than comparing student coursework and grades). The SAT II's help the colleges distinguish a student that much more. Some schools receive close to 20,000 applications, 60% of those applicants having straight-A averages. These scores help distinguish one student from another. About test preparation. There is a good deal of discussion about how to prepare for these types of tests. If you do nothing else, make sure you have read the practice instructions in advance, understand the timing, go over the tips provided, and do the practice questions in the pamphlet provided with the registration material. Taking the test multiple times.

COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS
The SAT I Reasoning Test is required by most colleges. The test is offered in October, November, December, January, March, May and June. The SAT II Subject Tests fall into five general subject areas - English, History, Mathematics, Science, and Languages. The University of California requires three SAT II tests (Writing, Mathematics Level I or IC or IIC and one of the student’s choice). Some selective colleges require these tests as well. The tests are usually given on the same day as the SAT I. The cost is per test and a maximum of three tests may be taken in one day. The SAT I and the SAT II cannot be taken on the same day. The ACT is another entrance exam and is accepted by most colleges. The tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. It is offered six times each year. SAT I, SAT II, and ACT Preparation Workshops are offered by individual school sites. Check with the high school's college counselor to obtain the dates of these workshops. These workshops are also provided by USC MESA on a need basis. To prepare for the SAT I Reasoning Test, students are encouraged to take the

College Entrance Exams Students in our area take one of four exams to get into college. The following is a brief explanation to help students. The College Board makes both the SAT and the PSAT/NMSQT test. You have taken this test in your sophomore or junior year. The PSAT/NMSQT is used by colleges to award scholarships but not for admission and is divided into three areas: Math, Verbal and Written. These scores range from 200 to 800. The average combined score in Washington last year was 1050. In the nation it was 902. A perfect score on the SAT is 1600. The test is given seven times a year on Saturdays at various high schools and takes 3 hours. You can take the test as many times as you want, but most students take their first test in the spring of their junior year. Most colleges will accept the best combined score of a single testing session. You should consider taking the SAT test if *You are going to start at a four-year college in Washington State.
