Choosing A Major?
Back to Academics Requirements for a BA Degree Back to Admissions Choosing a Major "It is not unusual for a student to be undecided about a major, or, for that matter, to change majors while in college. My own college career is a good example. I began as an art major and then explored majors in music, economics, and political science. I finally graduated with a major in history. Several years after graduation I decided I liked political science better and completed a Ph.D. in that field. I wonder, sometimes, if I might have been happier with a degree in music," says Dr. Sam Meredith, Professor of Political Science.
A liberal arts college is a place where students can learn about a wide variety of fields, explore a wide variety of careers, and find the best outlets for their talents and interests. While some majors, like education and the sciences, push for an early commitment so a student can get in all the required courses, for most majors it is possible to wait as late as the end of the sophomore year before making a final decision. The first year and part of the second is taken up with general requirements that all students must take, which gives one an introduction to what the various fields are like. This is enough time for most students to find their calling. However, a more important advantage of a liberal arts education, one that requires study of a wide range of disciplines, is that a graduate has the skills and breadth of knowledge to change careers later in life. We find that our best students have broad interests and prefer to take a wide range of classes

In a liberal arts environment, almost all majors can lead to good, stimulating employment after graduation. The choice of the major should be based upon interest in the subject matter and desire to learn and read extensively about it. Introduction to Choosing A College Major
It all begins when you're growing up and people ask you “So what do you want to be when you grow up?” As you enter college the inquiries shift to: “What is your college major?”
“What do you plan to do with your college major when you graduate?”
“Just what are your career plans?”
You feel the pressure. You envy the friends that seem so career focussed. If you are an older individual who has been out of high school for some time, you may feel the added pressure of time constraints, as well as work and family responsibilities. You wonder why choice of a college major and comtemplations about career direction have been such a struggle for you. Are you alone in your struggles? The answer is a resounding ‘ NO ’. It is quite normal to be uncertain about the choice of an academic major and /or career direction at this time. College is a time of exploration and self-discovery. It is a time for opening new doors rather than prematurely closing them.

by Randall S. Hansen, Ph.D. The most important piece of advice in this article follows this sentence, so please make note of it and repeat it to yourself as often as you need as you read this article and make decisions regarding choosing a major in college. Are you ready for it? The advice: Don't panic I know it's easier said than done, but I can't tell you how many students I have advised since the time that I have been a professor that seem in a state of panic if they are uncertain of their major, let alone a career. Choosing a major, thinking about a career, getting an education -– these are the things college is all about. Yes, there are some students who arrive on campus and know exactly their major and career ambitions, but the majority of students do not, thus there is no need to rush into a decision about your major as soon as you step on campus. And guess what? A majority of students in all colleges and universities change their major at least once in their college careers; and many change their major several times over the course of their college career.

Many Internet sources can help you choose your major. Remember, your school’s career counselor can be the best resource in deciding on a major. Our article, Choosing a College Major: How to Chart Your Ideal Path takes you through the steps of a journey of self-discovery leading to a choice of major(s) and possible minors. The 10-Step Career Planning Guide , Canadian site, is particularly well-suited for high-school and lower-level college students. This career-exploration guide is especially comprehensive, covering exploration of values, interests, skills, learning style, and personality. It also guides users in researching careers in which they are interested and developing action steps for short- and long-term career planning. The later research-oriented steps are much better suited for Canadian users than Americans, but they are still helpful to all. The 10-Step guide is best completed in several sittings, but a very nice feature is the fact that the site will "remember" and store what you've already done, so you can simply pick up where you left off the next time you go back. Choosing Your Major
By Mary Lou Taylor But while this question may seem to be the most logical one to ask, answers for many majors may be difficult to find. Why is this? Most of you are attending college because you believe it will lead you to better employment. Your journey to better employment via a college degree is a journey of many choices including choice of college, choice of major, and choice of courses. Majors are part of the process that leads to earning a degree. They are designed for academic purposes rather than for career purposes. This is why the link between many majors and specific career fields is often unclear. Once you recognize this, you can begin asking questions that do have clear answers. Begin by identifying your specific decision-making goal. Different students prefer different starting points, and different starting points will suggest different questions. Where do you wish to begin? Do you want to choose a major first and identify career possibilities later, or choose a few career options and then identify possible majors that can help you get there?
    • Think of an important decision you have made recently, such as deciding on a specific college or making a significant purchase. The steps to making a major decision follow a basic decision-making/problem-solving process that you have used many times.

CHOOSE A MAJOR BEFORE ONE CHOOSES YOU
Your ideal career choice would probably be to win the lottery, travel, and retire early. Very few people have the luxury of these options. Most people choose their career or college major without much information about themselves or the world of work. You may choose your major based upon classes that you have done well in, upon what others think you would enjoy or letting a major choose you by not actively exploring your options. Choosing your college major is one of the most important decisions that you will make. Most people spend more time thoroughly researching the new car they wish to buy than they do on career decisions. Many graduates are surprised to find that their degree is not marketable.
When buying a car you may want to do research about the car by reading Consumer Reports, you may want to consult a mechanic to ensure the engine runs well, you may want to test drive the car, and carefully consider the financial implications of buying the car. A similar process of deciding will be helpful in your career decision-making process. When considering a career direction you may wish to do research via books, data bases, and the Internet; you may want to consult a career counselor or consultant; you may want to do volunteer or job shadowing in the areas you are considering; and you may wish to consider the future implications of your decision. Buying a car simply because you like the color is typically not a responsible choice, just as choosing a major based upon a
