"But I don't know where to start" Printer-friendly version That's what I hear most often. So here's the scoop.
Think in terms of four basic steps. Step 1
Do you want to go to college? Why? What for? You may never have stopped to think about this, but it's important. It's your life and your college education, so to increase your motivation and your chances for success, you have to begin by being able to provide an answer to these questions. (If you need some ideas to stimulate your thinking, check out the list in "Start Here."
If the answer is "No," OK. But then begin to think about what else you will want to do when you graduate from high school. You have to make some plans, identify some goals.
If the answer is "I'm not sure" or "I don't know," then proceed as if the answer is "Yes" because you don't want to close any doors at this point. Keep your options open.
If the answer is "Yes," then you're at the right place. Let's get started.

Applying Online Our Advice If you are applying to more than three schools, don't like using the typewriter, and want to save money, hassle, and time, consider applying online! Give it a try by filling one out, just with information off the top of your head, without sending it. You'll see how fast, easy, and unintimidating it is. Many colleges, especially private ones, use the Common Application This allows you to fill out one application form and submit it to several colleges. While some computers in the school have the CommonApplication on them, you can also access it online at: Common Application There are several sites from which you can access hundreds of online applications. Applyweb.com The Princeton Review , and Peterson's are three that we recommend. These sites will give you a free account on which you can store applications you've started but have not yet finished, so you can work on them over several days before sending them. These sites will require you to input basic information such as name, address, parent's names, and so on only once. After that it will be automatically input to all applications you fill out. Finally, most schools offer online applications at their web sites.

    Choosing a College
When trying to decide on the right college for you, it is important to first narrow your focus. You may want to start by looking at three key areas: size of institution, location, and general academic areas of interest. Size: Consider the type of environment you would like to experience in college. Do you want to be surrounded by tens of thousands of other students, know the first name of everyone on campus, or have something in between? You may want to visit a college or university of each size early on in your search to see what feels most comfortable. Location: General Academic Area of Interest: You do not need to know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life right now. However, you may want to give some consideration to the types of classes you enjoy. Do you have more interest in math and science, English and history, or the arts? This can help to determine what type of school might be best for you (e.g. liberal arts and sciences, engineering, technical, conservatory, etc.). When looking at colleges, you may want to look for programs not only in your specific area of interest, but in areas that complement that interest. The breadth of programs offered, and the ease of changing majors may be things to consider. How to Choose a Major
