Children and Colds
Children share more than play and study time in September. They also share plenty of germs. The contagious cold season, generally passed by hand contacts, usually picks up the moment children begin interaction. Because colds are the most common in fall and winter, September was chosen as the Cold and Flu Campaign month for the American Lung Association. It is common for a child to have as many as six colds in one year. A cold is the common name for a viral infection found in the nose, throat, sinuses and upper airways. The good news is that exposure to colds builds immunity to them which is why children gradually have fewer colds as they get older. Parents are usually familiar with runny, stuffy noses, sneezing, coughing, mild sore throat, occasionally fever and the general run-down feeling. Sometimes diarrhea and vomiting accompany the other symptoms. As familiar as the symptoms may be, the proper treatment can be confusing. Antibiotics are not used in the treatment of a cold as it will not cure a virus. Unfortunately, cold symptoms can last as long as two weeks, with the first few days being the most miserable, but many will subside in 5 to 7 days. Sometimes, painful ear infections may occur in conjunction with a cold.

Medical Advice Cats Claw: Cat's Claw (uncaria tomentosa) supports enhanced immune system function by augmenting white blood cell activity. Cat's Claw is grown in the highlands of the Peruvian Rainforest. The inner bark is harvested in an ecologically sound manner so the plant is not destroyed. This herb has been used traditionally for intestinal health and to fight viral infections.
Available from: www.PowerHealth.org Goldenseal Root (Hydrastis): This herb has a long history of use as an antibiotic and anti-microbial, and has enjoyed recent popularity as an adjunct to Echinacea for support during colds and flu. The root is the potent, medically effective part of the plant. (The leaves are less potent.)
Available from: www.PowerHealth.org Ester-C with Bioflavanoids: Available from: www.PowerHealth.org Dynamic Multi Plus: This is a top-of-the-line multiple vitamin and mineral supplementation. High quality multi-vitamin / mineral formulas are needed to add the necessary "co-factors" needed for enzymatic pathways. Organic chemistry studies (a requirement for medical school students), demonstrates that all enzymatic, energy, and virtually all biological pathways in the human body, need many nutrients, or co-factors, to properly complete each pathway. Shortages of needed nutrients results in dysfunction of the organs for which those pathways could not be completed properly.

Peer Review Status: Externally reviewed by the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, Inc. What Is Hay Fever?
The term hay fever is a misnomer. First of all, it is not caused by hay, and secondly, it does not produce fever! But it does produce stuffed-up, runny/itchy nose and eyes, sneezing, itchy throat, and excess mucus in the nose and throat, and it is caused by allergy to airborne particles that are inhaled. And summer colds are not colds in the usual sense of the word (e.g. virus infections). Instead, they are, like hay fever, allergies to airborne particles. Hay fever and summer colds are common terms for the medical condition known as allergic rhinitis. (Rhinitis means inflammation of the nose.) More than 14 million Americans suffer from allergic rhinitis. For some it is a mere nuisance. But for others, it is debilitating. It interferes with work and recreation, and it significantly detracts from the quality of their lives. What Causes Allergy?

Key: Click a word marked like this Glossary to see its meaning. I seem to be getting lots of coughs and colds now I'm pregnant. Is there a reason for this?
It's known that that your immune system is lowered slightly during pregnancy in order to stop your body rejecting your unborn baby. This may mean that you are more vulnerable to infections, such as coughs, colds and flu. You can help to boost your immune system by eating a healthy diet including plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. These contain antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamin C, which help to fight infections. You may also like to take a vitamin and mineral supplement specifically formulated for pregnant women, available from chemists. Make sure you get plenty of rest and try to

From a 1% to 5% of colds have this complication. ( T he major causes of the acute bacterial sinusitis are the bacteria called pneumococcus, Hemophilus influenza Moraxella , other Streptococcus species, and Staphylococcus ) Bacterial sinusitis also complicates tooth root infection, in which case it is caused by anaerobic bacteria. W hen a common cold has lasted for 7-10 days and is no better or worse, acute bacterial sinusitis may have developed and additional medical care may be required. ( A cute bacterial sinusitis requires antibiotic treatment to reduce the duration of infection and illness and to prevent serious complications such as infection around the eye, bacterial meningitis, and brain abscess. ( ) Chronic sinus disease is thought to be another complication of untreated or inadequately treated acute bacterial sinusitis.

RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS Flu and Colds How can I tell if I have a cold or the flu? Colds and the flu (also called influenza) have many of the same symptoms. A cold is generally mild, while the flu tends to be more severe. A cold often starts with feeling tired, sneezing, coughing, and having a runny nose. You may not have a fever, or you may run a low fever (just one or two degrees higher than usual). You also may have muscle aches, a scratchy or sore throat, watery eyes, and a headache. The flu starts suddenly and hits hard. You'll probably feel weak and tired, and have a fever, dry cough, runny nose, chills, muscle aches, severe headache, eye pain, and a sore throat. It usually takes longer to get over the flu than it takes to get over a cold.

Colds and Flu Care
Introduction Colds and the ‘flu are acute viral infections of the respiratory tract. Influenza has a brief incubation period. The symptoms appear suddenly and while the virus enters the respiratory tract, it soon affects the entire body. The symptoms include fever, chills, headache, sore throat, coughs, gastro-intestinal disturbances, muscular pain, and neuralgia (nerve pain). Susceptibility to a cold or the ‘flu is dependant on an individual’s general state of health. Many people get exposed to the flu virus yet do not present with symptoms, due to their healthy lifestyles. Yet others will have poor resistance because of poor diet, continual stress or overexposure to environmental toxins. This is where Echinacea/Thuja Comp. can really help the person build up their natural resistance to coughs and colds. Childhood Illnesses Colds
By the time your baby turns 2, he or she will probably have come down with 8 to 10 colds. Colds are caused by a number of viruses. They are highly contagious and easily spread through the air and through direct contact with contaminated surfaces.
Unfortunately, colds are a part of life. The symptoms last about a week and are all too familiar: runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough and slight fever. These symptoms can be more uncomfortable for a baby than for an older child or adult. A baby can’t blow his or her nose and has a hard time breathing through the mouth. A stuffy nose can make it difficult for a baby to suck, interfering with feeding.
Call your child's doctor if your child:
  • Has a cough that does not get better after a week, or worsens.
  • Has mucus that becomes thick and green or grayish colored.
  • Has a sore throat that is getting worse.
  • Develops ear or face pain.

The most common illnesses for which people visit their health care provider include colds, bronchitis, and the "flu".
Many people think (or have been told) that they "need antibiotics" for these ailments. Indeed, many physicians have prescribed antibiotics for these ailments. In the past few years, however, physicians worldwide have become increasingly concerned about the problems with prescribing antibiotics when such drugs are not necessary. Problems include:
  • Side effects or serious allergic reactions. The growing problem of antibiotic resistance. Many bacteria can no longer be killed by antibiotics because the germs have developed defense mechanisms against the drugs.
Colds, bronchitis, and common "flu" do not improve more quickly with antibiotics.

Chinese Medicine considers Colds and the Flu to be some combination of Heat, Cold, Wind, Dampness and Dryness. The possible combinations of these factors are nearly endless, but, the symptoms of the basic patterns are a little easier to recognize. For example, when Cold invades the body, the tongue fur will be white; When Heat invades, the tongue fur will be yellow; When Dampness invades, the tongue fur will look greasy. Usually Cold or Heat will combine with Wind to invade the body. These common patterns are listed below along with typical symptoms. Match your symptoms with those in the chart and find the Chinese Medicine description of the kind of cold/flu you have. Then treat it accordingly. Pattern Symptoms Wind-Heat High fever, chills, sweat, sore throat, thirst, cough with thick yellow phlegm. Dark colored, scanty urine. Thin yellow fur. Wind-Cold Chills, fever, no sweat, scratchy throat, runny or stuffy nose, cough with white or clear phlegm. Thin white tongue fur.

  • Colds are an infection of the upper respiratory tract. It is a mild infection but is very common. It is sometimes called "the common cold."
What causes it?
  • Colds are caused by a viral infection. Your child cannot "catch a cold" by standing out in the rain, not wearing a hat in cold weather, or losing sleep.
Who can get it?
  • Children tend to get colds more often than adults do. Children in school or day care are more likely to get colds because infections are spread easily in classrooms and closed spaces. Children's symptoms tend to be worse than adults' symptoms. The cold season in the U.S. starts in August or September and ends around April or May. But, colds can happen any time of the year.
What are the signs and symptoms?
