There is a fair amount of misunderstanding in families about ways to prevent the transmission of viral diseases in the home. The investigators found that 60% of parents erroneously believed that some colds were caused by bacteria and nearly half erroneously believed that things such as colds, bronchitis and green mucous should be treated with antibiotics. Colds are actually caused by viruses, and antibiotics and antibacterial lotions have no effect on them.

Colds and flu
Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
December, 2002. Revised November 2003. Download this factsheet The runny nose, sore throat or "bunged up" feeling of a cold is caused by one of many viruses, called rhinoviruses, that can infect the upper part of the breathing system (upper respiratory tract). Influenza - or flu - has similar symptoms but tends to be a more severe illness. In vulnerable people it can be dangerous.
Fighting flu
Although a cold can make you feel miserable, colds are usually "self limiting". This means the body fights off the infection and the cold is cured without the need for specific medical treatment.
The flu season
Most cases of flu in the UK occur between December and March.

For Sinus Congestion Relief from prolonged inflammation of the sinus passages caused by common cold, allergies, or bacterial infection find out how to get relief from these symptoms with a common cold home remedy.
Most sinus congestion accompanies the flu and common cold along with a stuffy, runny nose, sneezing, and generalized aches and pains. These common cold viruses are highly contagious and spread quickly – especially in winter months. The body builds antibodies that help destroy the common cold, but that process can take a week or longer depending on the severity of the sinus infection.

You may have symptoms with flu that you don't have with colds - but you can treat them in the same way. How to treat your cold and flu symptoms
Drink plenty of fluids. Hot drinks can have a soothing effect. If you don't feel like eating, try soup instead. As long as you can take them, alternate paracetamol and aspirin every 3 hours; this will ease your sore throat and muscle aches without risking an overdose of either drug. Don't do strenuous exercise. To avoid spreading viruses, cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze. Wash your hands regularly to avoid spreading germs. Shaking hands is a common way of passing on the germs, so avoid this if you can. If you do have flu, take it easy. Ensure that you rest and, if necessary, take time off work or school for a full recovery. For sore throats and coughing, adults can gargle with soluble aspirin or suck throat lozenges.

52. Vitamin C: Do High Doses Prevent Colds?

Vitamin C:
Do High Doses Prevent Colds?
Charles W. Marshall, Ph.D.
(Edited by Stephen Barrett, M.D)
Few things have stirred the imagination and hopes of the public in matters of nutrition or vexed nutrition scientists as much as Linus Pauling's 1970 book, Vitamin C and the Common Cold. [1] The book's main claim was that taking 1 gram (1,000 mg) of vitamin C daily would reduce the incidence of colds by 45% for most people, but that some persons might need much larger amounts. It recommended that if symptoms of a cold do start, you should take 500 or 1,000 mg every hour for several hours or 4 to 10 grams daily if symptoms don't disappear with smaller amounts. Without question, publication of this book, combined with Pauling's reputation as a Nobel Prize-winning scientist, has made vitamin C a best seller. When his theory was announced, millions of Americans rushed to try it for themselves. The second edition of the book, issued in 1976 as Vitamin C, the Common Cold and the Flu, suggested even higher dosages [2].

Colds and Flu: Time Only Sure Cure
by Tamar Nordenberg It's not chicken soup. Believe it or not, a much more unorthodox therapy of warm-and-cold showers has recently been proposedthough not provenfor the prevention of the common cold. Shower therapy joins an ever-growing spectrum of suggested preventers and treatments for the common coldamong them, hand washing, vitamin C, interferon, seclusion, and various over-the-counter cough and cold medications. "An efficient, practical and inexpensive prophylaxis [preventive measure] against one of the most frequent (and 'expensive') diseases has been identified at last," claims water therapy researcher Edzard Ernst, M.D., in the April 1990 issue of Physiotherapy. Though some may doubt his shower theory, Ernst is right about one thingthe common cold is a frequent and expensive disease, striking some people as many as 12 times a year and leading to some 15 million days lost from work annually in the United States. Influenza, or flu, likewise, is a frequent and expensive disease, reaching epidemic levels in the United States each year. Identify the Enemy Flu is like the cold in many waysmost basically, they're both respiratory infections caused by viruses. If a cold is misdiagnosed as flu, there's no problem. At worst, a cold can occasionally lead to secondary bacterial infections of the middle ear or sinuses, which can be treated with antibiotics. But if the flu is misdiagnosed as a bad cold, potentially life-threatening flu complications like pneumonia may be overlooked.

Antibiotics and colds
FROM Antibiotics and colds: Antibiotics are ineffective against the viruses that cause the runny nose, cough and other symptoms of the common cold. A new study, however, found that nearly half of adults and one-third of parents of children with cold symptoms wanted a prescription for antibiotics to manage the symptoms. Barbara L. Braun, Ph.D., and Jinnet B. Fowles, Ph.D., of HealthSystem Minnesota in Minneapolis, investigated the reasons for the requests for antibiotics and their use among people who had colds.
