Welcome dear visitor,
This project's main aim is to provide you fast and accurate information about the Cold War in a handy and easy way. It's not supported by any institution or foundation but I really worked my ass off to make it as good as I could. The project itself is based upon the compilations of different materials I came across since the early 1990s. However, it's still updated so contributions or suggestions are welcome.

Its objective is to reflect the history of a proud Regiment and to promote communication among those of us who have been privileged to serve in its squadrons and battalions. In the last 103 years, troopers of the 14th Cavalry have fought in both Asia and Europe and on the southern border of our homeland. During the Cold War the 14th ACR stood guard for 23 years at the most critical sector of the Iron Curtain. Now the 1st Squadron is conducting operations in northern Iraq and the 2nd Squadron is preparing for deployment this summer. We honor the troopers who served with the: 14th Cavalry Regiment (Horse) in the period 1901 to 1943 with campaigns in the Philippines and on the Mexican Border.

... Back to the main page A General Overview of the Cold War The Cold War was an ideological war between the two world superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, beginning after World War Two. After the war, Germany was left defeated, and Britain and France were left drained and exhausted. The United States and the Soviet Union, though also drained, held considerable power, and both soon rose to superpower status. The two became rivals through "conflicting ideologies and mutual distrust" , and constantly competed for power.
The Soviet Union wanted to spread Communism in Eastern Europe and create a "buffer zone" of friendly governments as defense against Germany. In 1946, with Eastern Europe under Soviet control and influence, Europe was divided into a West (western democracies and the United States) bloc and East (Soviet Union and Soviet occupied territory) bloc. An "iron curtain" separated Europe. Germany Divided The aftereffects of World War Two were what shaped Cold War Germany. The post-war state of Germany was grim: about 1/4 of housing had been destroyed, the economic infrastructure had largely collapsed, inflation was rampant, there was a shortage of food, and millions of homeless Germans from the east were returning. After its unconditional surrender, Germany was divided into four zones of Allied military occupation: American, French, British, and Soviet. The old capital of Berlin was also divided into four zones, but Berlin itself remained inside of the Soviet zone. In 1949, the French, British, and American zones merged and formed the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublic Deutschland), with its capital city Bonn. Also in 1949, the Soviet zone became the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) with the Soviet sector of Berlin as the capital.

This website also stands in honor of all the Boats, past and present, of their Silent Service, and their crews who return to the deep to keep this country free; And to the many who will never return from Eternal Patrol
Please excuse the load time on the graphics.
It is winter, early in 1969. Men have not yet walked on the moon. The Cold War is hot in Viet Nam. Sabers are ratteling throughout the world. Submarines are going about their silent business throughout the oceans of the world.
This is a picture of the Jackson when I reported aboard her in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard right after I completed Sub School. This was My first boat after serving on two surface craft and completing electronics and nuclear power schools. She was in the shipyard undergoing a major overhaul including replacing the reactor core and conforming some of the systems to subsafe. The down side was that a submarine is not a submarine when tied to the pier. The best part was being aboard during system changes and installations, sea trials, transits, missile shots, and becoming a qualified submariner. New Tools for Researchers W hen the World Wide Web first emerged, less than ten years ago, its arrival was accompanied by predictions (and on the part of some, fears) that libraries would soon become obsolete. Clearly, that has not occurred, nor is it likely to occur in the near future; however, libraries have been dramatically changed by the advent of new technologies. New databases and increasingly sophisticated search engines have transformed how historians search for even traditional print sources. These databases range from the online catalogue of one's own library or (more frequently) consortia of libraries, to the vast storehouse of records available through the Library of Congress or such organizations as the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and the Research Libraries Group (RLG) ABC-CLIO's large historical databases, previously available on CD, may now be searched online at subscribing institutions. COLD WAR: POSTWAR ESTRANGEMENT
The Western democracies and the Soviet Union discussed the progress of World War II and the nature of the postwar settlement at conferences in Tehran (1943), Yalta (February 1945), and Potsdam (July-August 1945). Stalin at Potsdam Joseph Stalin (right center, rear in white uniform) listens in on the discussions at the Potsdam Conference in 1945 following the German surrender. The conference was to determine the four-power partition of Germany and the future of Eastern Europe. To Stalin's right is the Soviet foreign minister, Vyachevslav Molotov. After the war, disputes between the Soviet Union and the Western democracies, particularly over the Soviet takeover of East European states, led Winston Churchill to warn in 1946 that an "iron curtain" was descending through the middle of Europe. For his part, Joseph Stalin deepened the estrangement between the United States and the Soviet Union when he asserted in 1946 that World War II was an unavoidable and inevitable consequence of "capitalist imperialism" and implied that such a war might reoccur. The Cold War was a period of East-West competition, tension, and conflict short of full-scale war, characterized by mutual perceptions of hostile intention between military-political alliances or blocs. There were real wars, sometimes called "proxy wars" because they were fought by Soviet allies rather than the USSR itself along with competition for influence in the Third World, and a major superpower arms race.

Brainwashing at home
How the Cold War worked
Despite much pretense, national security has not been a major concern of US planners and elected officials. The historical record reveals this clearly. Few serious analysts took issue with George Kennan's position that "it is not Russian military power which is threatening us, it is Russian political power" (October 1947); or with President Eisenhower's consistent view that the Russians intended no military conquest of Western Europe and that the major role of NATO was to "convey a feeling of confidence to exposed populations, a confidence which will make them sturdier, politically, in their opposition to Communist inroads." Similarly, the US dismissed possibilities for peaceful resolution of the Cold War conflict, which would have left the "political threat" intact. In his history of nuclear weapons, McGeorge Bundy writes that he is "aware of no serious contemporary proposal...that ballistic missiles should somehow be banned by agreement before they were ever deployed," even though these were the only potential military threat to the US. It was always the "political" threat of so-called "Communism" that was the primary concern. (Recall that "Communism" is a broad term, and includes all those with the "ability to get control of mass movements....something we have no capacity to duplicate," as Secretary of State John Foster Dulles privately complained to his brother Allen, CIA director, "The poor people are the ones they appeal to," he added, "and they have always wanted to plunder the rich." So they must be overcome, to protect our doctrine that the rich should plunder the poor.)

COLD WAR: CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS
According to Nikita Khrushchev's memoirs, in May 1962 he conceived the idea of placing intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Cuba as a means of countering an emerging lead of the United States in developing and deploying strategic missiles. He also presented the scheme as a means of protecting Cuba from another United States-sponsored invasion, such as the failed attempt at the Bay of Pigs in 1961. After obtaining Fidel Castro's approval, the Soviet Union worked quickly and secretly to build missile installations in Cuba. On October 16, President John Kennedy was shown reconnaissance photographs of Soviet missile installations under construction in Cuba. After seven days of guarded and intense debate in the United States administration, during which Soviet diplomats denied that installations for offensive missiles were being built in Cuba, President Kennedy, in a televised address on October 22, announced the discovery of the installations and proclaimed that any nuclear missile attack from Cuba would be regarded as an attack by the Soviet Union and would be responded to accordingly. He also imposed a naval quarantine on Cuba to prevent further Soviet shipments of offensive military weapons from arriving there. Szilard's ideas included the linear accelerator, cyclotron, electron microscope, and nuclear chain reaction. Equally important was his insistence that scientists accept moral responsibility for the consequences of their work. In his classic 1929 paper on Maxwell's Demon, Szilard identified the unit or "bit" of information.
