A Companion to
Rare Coin Collecting
By Ray Wyman, Jr.
Interested in rare coins? Do you want to start a rare coin collection? I wrote A Companion to Rare Coin Collecting for a group of investment advisors who needed a booklet that introduced basic concepts of the art of rare coin collecting. For that reason, this text offers equal time to the pros and cons of rare coin collecting. It provides good insights on how to avoid common mistakes and provides simple layman explanations. In the chapter "Are Rare Coins for You?" readers will find out if they fit the profile for this form of investing. "What is a Rare Coin?" helps define the topic of true rarity while the succeeding chapters - "Grading Services", "The Market", "How to Buy Rare Coins", "Holding Coins", and "Selling Coins" - help define the form and structure of the investment. As to the question, "why is this book offered free?" Simply put, there are too many other better books about rare coin collecting that were written by well-known numismatists (see the 'Suggested Reading' list below). Nevertheless, since its public release to the Web in 1997, this text has been read by more than a quarter of a million readers hailing from Australia, Europe, and the U.S. Numerous webmasters and editors from all sorts of hobby sites, including prominent search engines such as Ask Jeeves, InfoSeek, Lycos, and AOL, have selected this book for their particular venues dealing with coins and hobbies. As a result, Companion is widely read by thousands of new collectors each week. I wish all of you the very best of luck - but most of all have fun.

Rare Coins and Politics
Joel D. Rettew A Scandalous Coin

Politics and rare coins might not seem to go together, but they are linked throughout the history of the United States. From the first coins of the 1650s to the change you carry in your pocket today, political influence has been a significant part of United States coinage. The first coins struck in what is now the United States were minted in 1652, more than a century before the "United States" existed. The Massachusetts Bay Colony struck silver coins from 1652 through about 1682, yet all but one of the denominations always carried the date 1652 regardless of the actual year of issue. Why? Politics. Since the coins were minted openly, there was real intent to fool the British Crown into believing that all of coinage in circulation was actually minted in 1652, when there was no monarchy. Instead, it was probably a courtesy. The colonists were saying: "We're going to continue to mint our own coins while not appearing to flagrantly ignore your edicts."
In 1665, after receiving a book of laws from the colonists, the King's Commissioners requested that a number of laws be changed or repealed. Among them was the following: ". . .title money, the law about a mint house, etc., be repealed, for coining is a royal prerogative, for the usurping of which yet act of indemnity is only a salvo."

coin collecting My interest in collecting coins began when I noticed a 'P' on a Roosevelt Dime. I thought it might be an error so I asked a friend of mine if they knew what it was. He explained that it was a mint mark and asked if I was interested in collecting coins. I said I was, so he gave me some 2x2 Mylars and an old Redbook and I was on my way. I rode my bike about 7 miles on Saturdays to add coins to my collection. There was also a small coin shop right by my house that I would visit, sometimes just to chat about coins with the dealer. I subscribed to a few coin magazines and found out about the ANA and became a junior member. They welcomed me even though I had very little experience collecting or doing shows. They awarded me a scholarship to go to Colorado Springs (where the ANA is based) to go to the Annual Summer Conference. After meeting the "celebrities" of coin collecting, I was hooked. When living in Spain I didn't do much until the last 6 months when I began putting together a collection of Spanish coins. Unfortunately, some were stolen from the package I sent to my home in the US. I haven't gone back to collecting as much as I did when I was younger, but I started a
