cockatoos are really fantastic birds; but few people realise how they can contribute to philosophy. 2 Ethics. cockatoos have a lot to contribute to ethics.
http://philrsss.anu.edu.au/~josh/cockatoo.html
1 Introduction.
Cockatoos are really fantastic birds; but few people realise how they can contribute to philosophy. In view of this, I have decided to compile this page of notes on this topic. It is designed to be read in conjunction with Henry Fitzgerald's similar notes on the philosophical merits of dogs , and Cathy Legg's on cats
2 Ethics.
Cockatoos have a lot to contribute to ethics. They are clearly hedonists, though there has been much debate over whether egoistic or utilitarian hedonists. Clearly, the greatest good for cockatoos is fun ; it remains to be seen whether the appropriate receptacle of fun is the individual cockatoo, or all moral agents, broadly conceived.
2.1 Egoism considered
The primary egoist argument is that cockatoos are often seen to act in ways that we regard as having an ethical disvalue: it would seem that a cockatoo is acting in such a way that it, ceteris paribus gains fun, while other moral agents seem to loose it. For example, screeching loudly outside a student's window at 6am on a Sunday morning. The prima facie explanation for this would be that the primary value for this cockatoo is its own happiness, while that of other agents is not to be considered.

Living With Companion cockatoos Broadening the Human Perspective. Just what is the mystique that attracts us to those creatures we call cockatoos?

Living With Companion Cockatoos: Broadening the Human Perspective by Sam Foster This article, published in Issue #53 of the Companion Parrot Quarterly, may not be reprinted in part or in full without the express written consent of the author. Our initial entry into the world of aviculture proves many of us to be ashamedly unprepared for the lifelong responsibility we have accepted by opening our homes, and our hearts, to an avian companion. Cockatoos are certainly among the most intriguing and charismatic parrots; yet, the limitations of current data concerning their behaviors and inherent personalities often prove our knowledge and abilities deficient. A question that represents one of the primary challenges facing aviculture today is-how many of you feel that you were armed with the necessary knowledge and emotional fortitude to live harmoniously with these creatures, prior to a Cockatoo entering your life? Just what is the "mystique" that attracts us to those creatures we call Cockatoos? More importantly, why are the relationship challenges between Cockatoos and their caregivers often more than people are prepared, or willing, to accept?

cockatoos and African Greys Are they Really So Different? However, what if many of the urban myths about cockatoos and greys are just those urban myths?

Cockatoos and African Greys: Are they Really So Different? Part 1 of 2 by Sam Foster and Jane Hallander This article is reprinted from The Pet Bird Report , with permission from the author. It sounds as if these are aliens from two different planets, rather than separate classes of the parrot family. However, what if many of the urban myths about cockatoos and greys are just those urban myths? Maybe these parrots who share 'shades of grey' as their primary coloration have much more in common than we think. Let's take a look at some common misconceptions about cockatoos and greys and the possible reasons behind these misconceptions. Of course, there are exceptions, however the average imported grey or cockatoo, who has no health problems, has already withstood incredible trauma from the capturing process alone. Now it's in a cage, with people who may or may not understand its social needs and yet, there are relatively few who pluck their feathers or become phobic. Why is this? And why do we see few cases of feather plucking among South American and some other Australasian parrot species? There are some who are seldom seen, even out of breeding season, in groups of more than a dozen and others who stay primarily in pairs. Could it not therefore be logical to theorize that the impact of hundreds of thousands of years spent by cockatoos in these assorted environments would have a profound impact on their instinctive behavior, even in a captive environment?

SULPHUR-CRESTED COCKATOOS
by Steven Armstrong I had been looking for a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo hen for quite a while to put with my 4-year-old cock bird. He is a lovely big bird, in perfect feather and quite a character in the rain. In April, I heard of a lady in Brisbane wanting to sell a hen that had been working the nest in previous years but had not laid yet. I went down and had a look at the cockatoo and decided to bring her home. I put her in one of those Ansett dog crates lined with news-paper and we headed for home. We wouldn't have been travelling more than twenty-five minutes when she decided it would be a good idea to eat the newspaper. It was hilarious to hear her shredding the newspaper on the back seat. She made such a mess, but I suppose it helped with the stress of travelling. I put her in quarantine for a couple of weeks and on one sunny Sunday morning I put her in with the cock bird. She was rather timid and took a few days to find her feet and settle down but what was most amazing was that within ten minutes of putting her in, the cock bird was attempting to mount her and after a few failures, he was mating her!

Part 1
by John McGrath ©
Information Covered: Article DESCRIPTION A stocky cockatoo close in size to the familiar Galah (Eolophus roseicappillis), with soft forward curving crest. (The scientific name of the Galah has been changed to Cacatua roseicapilla since this article was written - Ed). Basically a sooty grey-coloured plumage. The adult cock bird crest, forehead cheeks are red in colouration. His flight feathers appear dull olive-grey when not in flight. Chest feathers are lightly barred with a reddish light orangeish hue. Under tail coverts are barred yellowish orange. Feather of the mantle edges tinged light grey whitish. Tail feathers grey. The adult hen lacks the red of the cock on the face and crest, except that now my hen is over ten years old, she is showing a faint red tinge to the very tips of the feathers of her crest. She shows a lot of red tinging to the edges of the feathers to the chest and abdomen-under tail coverts barred as per cock bird. Mantle feathers edged in colour similar to cock birds, and tail is grey.

A Leader in Breeding Hand Reared Companion Parrots
Specialist Breeders of Eclectus, Conures, Exotics, and Australian Companion Parrots Welcome to Parrot Haven Aviary's web pages . I have tried to produce a web site that is beneficial to all aviculturists. Parrot Haven Aviary specialise in Handreared Baby Parrots. All babies are bred at Parrot Haven Aviary and reared in a family environment, our baby Parrots are completely at ease with other family members and pets. Each baby has a birth certificate and literature containing all the information needed to ensure each pet Parrot stays healthy, happy and free from stress. Our baby Parrots make the ultimate companion bird and the perfect pet. Parrot Haven Aviary is a commercial aviary owned and operated by my wife Lyn and myself (Garry Lee.) Parrot Haven Aviary is devoted to producing only hand reared companion parrots for the companion and pet parrot owners of Australian. Our babies have been incubated and hatched in our incubation room, or raised by their parents until they are around 10 days of age. They are then removed from the nest for hand rearing by us. All of our babies are fed hand rearing formula (commercially made) from a spoon, this allows for more human contact and a much quieter, loving and devoted companion in the end, not afraid to be handled by people. Lynette and I fuss over our babies as though they were our own children, so much that we use the phrase "mummy and daddy" when talking to them (no we are not totally mad, but totally devoted to our babies and the enjoyment that they can and do give us while raising them.)

Rose-breasted Cockatoo -
Breeding the Beautiful Galah By Dale R. Thompson In Australia, the Rose-breasted Cockatoo is known as the "Galah." It is found in the wild in the multi-thousands. For bird watchers and visitors to Australia, the Galah is truly a fantastic sight to see. They are most often observed in groups, both small and large. When seen in the hundreds, whether in trees or flying in the air, it becomes a memorable experience. For the Australian aviculturist, the Galah is not a prized bird. Because of their great numbers in the wild where they are often considered an agricultural pest by some of the grain producing farmers, this cockatoo is worth almost nothing in captivity. If kept at all, it is usually as a pet. The value of th e Galah or Rose-breasted Cockatoo is well illustrated by the personal experience I observed while I was visiting a Sydney pet store. A 12-year-old boy came into the shop with a tame Galah that was kept in a 12-X 14-X 18-inch cage. He wanted to sell to the manager of the pet store but was turned down. After some discussion, the boy traded his tame Galah for one gray Cockatiel and one female Red-rumped Parakeet. Although this was an astonishing transaction to me, the boy seemed delighted with the trade. When discussing the situation with the boy (who at first seemed reluctant to talk), he related that he had removed the Galah (he referred to it a "cocky") from a nest in a nest in the wild, hand raised it and then had become tired of it.

About Cockatoos
Family: Cacatuidae Subfamily: Cacatuinae Genus: Cacatua, Probosciger, Calyptorhynchus, Callocephalon, Eolophus Guide to a Happy, Healthy Cockatoo
Cockatoos are extremely affectionate, their feathers are very soft, and they are gorgeous!....on top of that, they are real intelligent and very inquisitive birds!
Cockatoos love to show off and make comical displays with outspread wings, head bobbing, dancing and loud calls. They are very active and curious about their environment. Happy cockatoos spend most of their waking time performing, or examining and manipulating their toys and other cage objects. The term "cockatoo" is a Malaysian word thought to have possibly two meanings, "pincher" or "old father". Pincher is definitely descriptive as the cockatoos have extremely powerful beaks, and can take apart or demolish a wooden toy in a no time.

Cockatoos are undoubtedly the friendliest and most loving of pet birds!
Cockatoos are extremely loving and social parrots. Intelligent, playful, and enchantingly comical, they seem to know what beautiful creatures they are! They will display their wings, toss their heads and raise their erectile crests in a proud impressive display. Make sure they have plenty of toys! With an incredible need for physical attention, they love being petted, hugged, and snuggled. A young bird's attachment and affectionate devotion to you requires that you make sure you have time to play with your pet each day. A neglected Cockatoo may resort to uncontrollable screaming or restless feather picking and these habits are very hard to break.

Welcome to My Web Site! I'm Tina Usher, and all of my life I have been captivated by all types of birds. I am a small aviary just outside of Chicago and I have been breeding the large parrots since 1981. I specialize in Congo African Greys, Moluccan, Umbrella and Medium Sulphur Crested (Elenora) Cockatoos and Green Wing Macaws. My home raised, hand-fed babies are well adjusted, gentle and loving. My clients rave about how much larger and more outgoing their parrots are compared to other pet birds they see. I also provide in- your -home grooming and behavioral consultations. Seeing the need, I am currently developing care, training and behavior workshops to help bird owners mend and/or improve their relationships with their avian pals. I'm using my education, training, experience and love for our birds to teach people how to understand and cohabit happily with their pet parrots.
