Do you live in an apartment or condominium? Are there children about? Are you on the go a lot or gone for extended periods of time? Do you have a limited pet budget? Do you like to be greeted and admired? If so, then the cockatiel could very well be just the pet for you and your family!
Cockatiels are one of the most popular pets! They have continued to grow in popularity since the first Europeans returned home from Australia with these gentle endearing little birds, vying for this top pet bird position only with the parakeet and the canary. They are one of 52 species of parrot native to Australia, and are one of Australia's fastest flyers. Australians call them the "Quarrian".

Nymphicus hollandicus Albino
(Whiteface - Lutino) Whiteface Cinnamon Pearl Cockatiels are one of the most popular pet birds. The reason is their even tempered personalities. This makes for a perfect first pet bird for most people. They are also good with kids and anyone else. Most cockatiels are sexually dimorphic, which means you can tell the sex of the bird by it's coloring. This is true for most cockatiels except Albinos, Lutinos, and Pieds. Male cockatiels can learn to talk and are more vocal. Females do not talk. When it comes to mutations one thing to know is that Pearl Males lose their pearling after their first molt around 6 months old. After the first molt is also the time when you can tell the sex of the bird. It is important to keep your cockatiel's wings trimmed. This helps with safety and personality. They are very strong flyers. We have heard too many stories of pets that have flown away. For the new owner you should purchase a bird that has been clipped. It is important to watch the bird after it's first molt. The previously trimmed feathers will be replaced with new ones allowing the bird full flight again. Bordetella Avium in Cockatiels
I. Introduction
Bordetella avium is a gram negative aerobic bacterium responsible for the avian disease referred to as bordetellosis. This disease is highly contagious producing an upper respiratory tract infection that most often leads to death in cockatiel chicks. This bacterium was first isolated from young turkeys in 1967 and officially named Bordetella avium in 1984. Clubb et al report isolation of B. avium from infected cockatiel chicks in late 1993. This study also reports isolation of B. avium from two Wagler’s conures, a jenday conure, a muluccan cockatoo and a nobles macaw that showed similar signs for bordetellosis. There are further reports of B. avium being isolated from numerous other species of birds to include chickens, finches, budgerigars, noble macaws, Japanese quail, ostriches, etc. This disease is worldwide and some speculate that it is being carried within 80% of caged cockatiels.
B. avium commences a path of infection by colonizing the ciliated epithelium of the cockatiel’s tracheal mucosa. As the disease progresses, it will destroy this outer layer of tissue along the respiratory tract and while doing so produce toxins that can affect other groups of tissue in the body. This infection will also predispose the cockatiel to other infectious diseases. B. avium acts quite similar to its human counterpart – Bordetella pertussis (whooping cough) however, there is no evidence that B. avium can infect humans.

http://www.cockatielcottage.net/basics.html
Cockatiels 101 Cockatiels are intelligent, social, companion birds. They are the second most popular pet bird after the parakeet. These elegant looking exotic birds are known for their pumpkin orange cheek patches, bright yellow crests and long sleek tails. Ranging in colors of yellow, gray, and white, cockatiels provide us with companionship, affection and entertainment. By tending to their needs with love, these charming birds greet us with songs or words when we awaken each morning and amuse us with their antics all day long.
Cockatiels are parrots and 1 of approximately 340 different species. Their name comes from a Dutch word "Kakatielje" which means little cockatoo. DNA research (UC-Davis, 1997) shows that cockatiels really do belong to one of the cockatoo families. The scientific name for these elegant birds is Nymphicus, hollandicus, which means "Goddess of New Holland", the name of Australia during 1700s-1800s. Australia is the native homeland of cockatiels. Our pet cockatiels are bred domestically because Australia banned exportation of all native birds in 1894.

I started out with Rose (featured in the logo), a female grey split to pied, who I fell in love with and bought in August of 1997. After having her for close to a year, I really became interested in breeding. After much research, I decided to search for a mate for Rose. Well I didn’t have any luck in finding the "perfect" mate so I decided to purchase a proven pair. Samantha, who is a normal grey and Andrew, who is a Lutino split pied, joined the family in August 1998. Many adults and babies now proudly own us. The family consists of Lutino's, Grey's, Pied's, Pearl's, Cinnamon's, Whiteface's, Pastel's, Silver's, Fallow's and Yellow Cheek's.
Love Tiels has ventured into a new aspect of the cockatiel hobby...SHOWING! We decided on showing our birds to be sure we were accomplishing our goal, to breed better quality cockatiels. Please see our Show Tiels page for more details.
