There are two aspects of raising cockatiels which I enjoy the most.
One, is the challenge of working with new mutations.
The other, exhibiting and judging the birds.
I also enjoy visiting old friends and making new ones.

  • Birds love to have a clear view of their world Provides a safe and pleasant bird cage environment Contains the mess unlike bar cages Air filtration system draws air from the cage and filters it before it enters your home Available in two high tech bird cage colors or with wood siding
The Visionary bird cage system is a technology breakthrough in bird cages that allows you to keep your parrots, macaws and cockatoos in your living room or family room. The mess that the birds make is contained in the cage and the bird cage system provides many ways to keep your bird safely entertained. The Visionary bird cage construction uses extruded aluminum structural elements and acrylic panels. Toys, natural branches, and nest boxes are easily attached to the aluminum with the optional fastener kit. Now Visionary bird cages are the free standing bird cage of choice of the Cleveland Zoo (Rainforest Exhibit) and the Baltimore Aquarium (Baltimore Oriole Exhibit)!

http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Vines/1492/cockatiels.html
Cockatiels!! Species/Description: The Cockatiel, Nymphicus hollandicus. The second-most-popular pet parrot, usually easily available. They originate from the drier areas of Australia. The "wild" coloring is mainly gray, with orange cheeks patches; the male has a bright yellow face, the female has a muted yellow face and barred tail feathers. Juveniles look like females. However, in captivity a great many color mutations have been developed; the common Pearls, Pieds, Lutinos, and Cinnamons, as well as somewhat less-commonly available Whitefaces, Silvers, "Albinos" (really Whiteface Lutinos), Pastels, Fallows, and Yellowfaces. And more! Cockatiels are usually around 11" long and from 75 to 125 grams; however, show birds can be considerably larger. Life span: Varies quite a bit. Most birds live around 10 years; however, on a good diet and with good care, you can expect your bird to live up to 20 years, and there are some reports of birds living to 25 years. Price: Anywhere from $30 to $300 for the very rare mutations. A hand-fed, weaned bird of the common color mutations (grays, pieds, pearls, etc.) from a breeder usually costs around $40 to $70. Birds from pets shops cost up to $100. Buying a Cockatiel: Cockatiels are very easily available birds; both from breeders and pets shops. The breeder is usually, but not always the preferable choice, depending on what breeders and pet shops you have to choose from! The ideal bird is a hand-fed bird that is just weaned and is obviously friendly; wanting to step up onto your hand, etc. Actually, parent-fed or untame tiels generally aren't all that hard to tame, when compared with many birds, however I would not consider this a project for a beginner; especially considering sweet hand-feds are easily available and not really that much more expensive.

COLOR IN COCKATIELS
Anthony Olszewski The cockatiel, Nymphicus hollandicus, or Quarrion, is a perfect avicultural subject. Originally from Australia, many thousands are reared commercially worldwide for the pet industry. The American Cockatiel Society has established a standard of excellence for the exhibition minded fancier. The cockatiel now occurs in six well-established mutations. These factors, three sex-linked recessive and three autosomal recessive, all affect the coloration of the plumage. Some traits also change the eye color from black to red. Many other color variants are reported. Some of these new colors are definite mutations in the process of becoming established. Others are simply combinations of pre-existing varieties or are imaginitive names used in sales pitches. The normal cockatiel is slate grey, reminiscent of a blue domestic pigeon. Some white extends from the wing butt down the outer edge of the wing. The cheeks have orange patches. A yellow suffusion covers the entire bird, more so in the males. The yellow suffusion is especially prominent in the head and crest of the cock. Adult hens have horizontal bars going down the tail.

Canary FAQ
Posted by Melinda on May 06, 2004 at 00:37:07: I purchased a proven pair of cockatiels recently and, much to my delight, they laid 5 eggs. Because my mother is superstitious I was not allowed to look inside the nest box so I couldn't see at what interval they were laid. To make a long story short 4 hatched and one didn't. The first one hatched so far apart from the last one that its huge with lots of "pre feathers" and the smallest doesn’t even have its eyes open yet. since they hatched so far apart do you think there still might be a chance for this last egg? I did take it out and put it next to a light bulb and saw that it was dark in the middle and it has an air spot, and it is gray (I don't know if that helps, I just figured I should say it). Is there hope for the last egg? And when do you think I should take it out if there isn’t any? Thank for the help!

Article IV - Breeding Cockatiels
    BREEDING COCKATIELS
    by Amy Patria
One advantage to breeding cockatiels is that they aren't extremely hard to pair up and get results. But, if you are breeding for real quality (large, well shaped, well marked, good natured) birds, it's a bit more of a challenge. Anyone can just place a nestbox on a cage, place two cockatiels of the opposite sex in it, and let nature take it's course. But, responsible breeding takes a lot more thought and time than that. In preparing to breed your cockatiels, you have to consider the health of the breeders, their colors and appearance (and what colors you want to end up with) as well as their temperaments. If you want to breed certain mutations, then you will need to familiarize yourself with some basic genetics concepts and how they affect mutations. You also must prepare a cage which will allow the necessary exercise and space during the breeding, brooding, fledging, and weaning stages. In addition to that, you must provide a nestbox which is suitable for the breeding pair and up to around 6 or so babies as they grow. Sexing
Be sure you start with a true pair. It is possible for females to lay infertile eggs without a male present. It's hard to sex some cockatiels due to their mutations. The lutino whiteface (a.k.a. albino) and the heavy pied mutations are nearly impossible to visually sex due to the lack of any darker color in their tail feathers and their wings. Generally, if the bird is extremely vocal, it's a male, but some females also have this ability.

Feeding Cockatiels

Variety is the key to a healthy diet. Seeds can be a nutritious part of the diet, but are high in fat so should only make up a part of the diet (some experts recommend no more than about 30% of the diet). Pelleted diets are often a good choice for birds as they are nutritionally balanced and birds can't pick out their favorite seeds and leave the rest. However, with both seeds and pellets a wide variety of other foods should complement the diet. A variety of fresh vegetables and fruit should be offered, although persistence might be needed before your bird will try new foods (particularly if they are accustomed to an all-seed diet). Proteins such as hard boiled egg, legumes, and cooked meats can be offered in moderation. Sprouted seeds are also an excellent way to add variety to your bird's diet. Avoid avocado. For more information on feeding, see

We have done our best to tell these birds' stories as honestly and gently as possible. As compared to all of our years of existence, so far, in 2004, we have taken in more injured, ill, and otherwise challenged birds than ever before. In order to properly care for the birds we have taken into our care, we are being forced to temporarily discontinue intake of new birds at this time. COCKATIELS:
How Long Do They Live?
by J. Howard Brown
Recently I was shown an article in an American magazine, written by Graeme Hyde, about a cockatiel in England that reached the ripe old age of 28 years, considered to be a record. This article, plus surveying a few friends prompted the following "age is all in the mind: - so 'tis said". It applies also to our feathered friends seemingly. Thirty this year and still going strong! When people come to buy a cockatiel you can bet you’ll be asked - "how long do cockatiels live?" The living proof is there for all to see - a cockatiel who is 30 years old this year (1997), in good feather, sprightly, active and alert.
