FAMILY LEPTOTYPHLOPIDAE (slender blind snakes)
This family of snakes is composed of 50 species in two families. They are generally regarded as the most primitive snakes, having a pelvic girdle and vestiglial hind limbs. They have a single lung and oviduct and are well adapted to their burrowing life style. They feed exclusively on small invertebrates such as ant and termite larvae. Leptotyphlopids are oviparous. There are two species of this family in North America. Leptotyphlops dulcis Texas Blind Snake Leptotyphlops humilis Western Blind Snake
FAMILY BOIDAE (boas and pythons)
Boidae is a large family of snakes that includes all five of the world's giant snakes. Boids are an ancient family that are characterized by a mixture of modern and primitive traits. They have flexible jaws found in more advanced families but also retain a pelvic girdle, vestigial hind limbs, and many use both lungs. While there are close to one hundred species of boids worldwide, there are only two species of boas found in North America, both in the sub-family Eryciniae. Thailand's Boonreung Buachan, holder of the Guinness Book of World Records title for spending the most time penned up with snakes, was killed by a cobra that bit him during his daily show, a hospital said on Monday.
Thailand's Boonreung Buachan, shown in Bangkok in this May 4, 1999 file photo, who was the holder of the Guinness Book of World Records title for spending the most time penned up with snakes was killed by a cobra bite during his daily show, announced a hospital on March 22, 2004. [Reuters] Boonreung, 34, who was dubbed as the "Snake Man," was rushed unconscious to Prai Bung Hospital near his hometown, 350 miles northeast of Bangkok, Dr Wipa Praituan told Reuters. "He was brought here with no signs of life. He wasn't breathing and his heart didn't beat," she said. Boonreung was listed by the "Guinness Book of World Records" in 1998 after living with snakes in a glass box for seven days. An epileptic, Boonreung went into convulsions after being bitten, but no one took him to the hospital initially because they thought he was suffering an epileptic fit.

Snakes are a large group of reptiles; there are over 2,000 different species of snakes alive today. Snakes live in a variety of land and water habitats. The most snakes and the largest snakes are found in tropical rainforests . Snakes are found on every continent except Antarctica . There are no snakes native to Hawaii, Iceland, Ireland, or New Zealand. Anatomy : Snakes have a long, narrow body and scaly skin. They have no eyelids, no external ear openings, and no legs (although a few snakes, like boas and pythons, have vestigial hind legs). As they grow, snakes shed their old skin and the film that covers their eyes. Like other reptiles, snakes are cold-blooded. Diet : Snakes are carnivores (meat-eaters). They eat

Modern classification has its roots in the system of Carolus Linnaeus, who grouped species according to shared physical characteristics. These groupings have been revised since Linnaeus to improve consistency with the Darwinian principle of common descent. Molecular systematics, which uses Genomic DNA analysis has driven many recent revisions and is likely to continue to do so. Cobra (snake)
Cobra (snake) in the news Cobras are venomous snakes of family Elapidae , of several genera . They generally inhabit tropical and desert regions of Asia and Africa. Cobras kill their prey, usually small rodents and bird s, by injecting a neurotoxin through their hollow fang s. The spitting cobra can also incapacitate larger would-be predators by delivering irritating venom to their eyes. The cobra's most recognizable feature is its hood, a flap of skin and muscle behind the head which it can flare, perhaps making it appear bigger and more threatening to predators. The hoods of some species carry markings which may also serve to confuse enemies. The cobra's predators include the mongoose and possibly some raptors.

  • Black-Necked Cobra ("Spitting" Cobra), Naja nigricollis nigricollis Cape Cobra, Naja nivea Egyptian Cobra, Naja haje Eastern Water Cobra, Boulengerina annulata stormsi Gold's Tree Cobra

Snakes - Some Facts
Venom - Neurotoxin Cobras are recognized by the hoods that flare when they are angry or disturbed. These reptiles are found throughout the Philippines, southern Asia, and Africa. The king cobra is the . It averages 3.7 m ( 12 ft ) in length but is known to grow to 5.5 m (18 ft). It is a thin snake, olive or brown in color, with bronze eyes. Spitting cobra : This snake can spray its venom from a distance of about 2.4 m (about 8 ft) into the eyes of its victims, blinding them temporarily and causing great pain. The venom of cobras, called a neurotoxin, acts powerfully on the nervous system. With effective serum available, however, the death rate from cobra bites in some areas of Asia has decreased. Cobra venom has been used for years in medical research because it has an enzyme, lecithinase , that dissolves cell walls and membranes surrounding viruses.
