The world's longest venomous snake, with a bite potent enough to kill an elephant. And no one knows that better than Romulus Whitaker, the Founder-Director of the Madras Snake Park who has spent most of his life in India wandering around the jungles of Western Ghats, Kerala and Tamil Nadu in his quest for King Cobras. Whitaker's Emmy award winning film on the real King of the Jungle explores the relationship between the charismatic cobra and creatures such as the forest tortoise, vine snakes, cow elephants, and giant squirrels. The film shot mainly in the rainforests of Kerala is a result of two years of intensive research in which Whitaker and his team travelled the length and breadth of Western Ghats, Orissa and contacted every zoo that breeds the King Cobra to know its habits. " We also set up a breeding programme in captivity to get the best shots of the female cobra laying eggs and then hatching them," says Whitaker. But the filming wasn't without its perils. The team's cameraman escaped narrowly when the King Cobra struck him on the head when he was trying to get a close shot of the snake without using the remote. Even Whitaker had a miraculous escape. When they were filming a fight between two King Cobras Whitaker got too close and one of the cobras pounced upon his back and hit him on his behind. " Luckily," says Whitaker, " It missed biting me. Though the venom of the King Cobra is less toxic than the common cobra, its massive glands have been known to yield over seven ccs of venom in a single extraction which is enough to wipe out an elephant."

TUNGPONG BAY, Thailand (May 21, 2004) In a setting much like a combination of popular TV shows "Survivor" and "Fear Factor," 31 Marines from various units here for Cobra Gold 2004, learned what it takes to survive in the Thai jungle.
The Marines and their Thai counterparts stayed in the jungle for 24 hours, learning everything from what plants and fruits are edible, to how to kill, skin and cook a cobra snake.
The Marines were taught how to survive in the jungles of Thailand by the Royal Thai Recon Marines.
Thai Warrant Officer Somsak Wanmuang, First Company, First Border Command, explained the importance of these unique skills.
"Every year the Marines come over and we train hand in hand," said Wanmuang. "We have the same weather every year and it is very important to learn how to survive out in the jungle. My unit goes out for three days with only two canteens. We have to find ways to survive for those three days, and we bring back our knowledge and teach it to the Marines here."

69. How Could The Ancient Egyptians Have Adored The Loathsome Snake?
It is critical to identify the devotional aspects of the cobra goddess in her multifarious expressions. Not all snakes were deemed holy by the Egyptians.
http://www.viewzone.com/snakex.html
How could the ancient Egyptians have adored the loathsome snake? First a distinction must be made between symbols and things symbolized. The snake- specifically the cobra snake -was the symbol of one of the most important Egyptian gods. This almost constitutes a definition of idolatry, but never mind; the prejudice against the belief in idols is a modern judgment. We have seen winners of the Academy Award stroke and kiss the Oscar. We may overlook the hint of idolatry with the understanding that it is not the statue which is the object of attention, but what the statue stands for. In a like manner the Egyptians overlooked the implied worship of dangerous snakes as show. What, then, did the cobra of Egypt represent that made the snake cults acceptable to them? It is important to note that the most venerated of the Egyptian gods was Ra, and that he was symbolized by a man-like figure crowned with the sun disk, surrounded by a serpent. This symbol, in turn, was venerated as Uraeus. What has been overlooked in the popular interest in things Egyptian is the relationship between the Uraeus and Ra. For reasons which will become clearer, this minor deity may be understood as the offspring of Ra, much as the Greeks had it that Athena was born from the forehead of Zeus. The wide acceptance of the importance of the cobra in the pantheon of the Egyptians can be seen in the common application of the cobra to the foreheads of statues of Egyptian royals and on burial sarcophagi. The cobra seen upon statuary is known particularly as Wadjet. This name, however, blends over the millennia of Egyptian civilization with Isis, via the intermediate name Ua Zit, meaning "supreme queen," through Au Set, and back again into Isis. What matters for this discussion is the devotion of the Egyptians to a female deity, and what that tells about their beliefs surrounding generation.

The snake farm is an attraction in Bangkok for tourists from all parts of the world. It is visited by scientists, educational bodies and distinguished visitors. Different kinds of poisonous snakes found in the country are kept for venom extraction which is demonstrated to the public at scheduled hours. These venomous snakes are brought in alive by snakecatchers who are farmers by profession and they are paid for at prices according to size and species. Poisonous snakes found in Thailand are Cobra, King Cobra, Banded Krait, Russell's Viper, a few species of Pit Vipers and some species of Sea Snakes. Numerous kinds of snakes other than mentioned above, though common in this country are not of importance to human lives because they are slightly poisonous or nonpoisonous. Their bites often cause alarm but generally are not dangerous. Features of Snakes: By nature, snakes are not aggressive and will attack human beings only under provocation. They see better at night and therefore will not naturally be seen around in broad daylight. Snakes have no external ears and are deaf to sounds. A snake can quickly perceive the approach of a footstep by the vibration conveyed through the ground with which it's body is in contact. The tongue is an organ of smell.

Ophiophagus hannah Description: Uniformly olive, brown, or green with ringlike crossbands of black. Characteristics: Although it is the largest venomous snake in the world and it has a disposition to go with this honor, it causes relatively few bites on humans. It appears to have a degree of intelligence. It avoids attacking another venomous snake for fear of being bitten. It feeds exclusively on harmless species. The female builds a nest then deposits her eggs. Lying close by, she guards the nest and is highly aggressive toward anything that closely approaches the nest. Its venom is a powerful neurotoxin. Without medical aid, death is certain for its victims. Habitat: Dense jungle and cultivated fields.

Most snakes are harmless to people - but a few are deadly A Thai man who held a world record for time spent with snakes has died after being bitten by one of his pet cobras.
Boonreung Bauchan - known as the Snake Man - suffered a venomous bite in the elbow while he was showing villagers a deadly snake, a hospital doctor said. He took herbal medicine and a shot of whiskey, and continued with the show until he collapsed, the doctor added. By the time Mr Boonreung was taken to hospital, the poison had spread through his body. He won a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records after spending seven days in an enclosure with snakes in 1998. The 34-year-old from Thailand's north-eastern Si Sa Ket province was supporting his family with income from his snake shows, according to The Nation newspaper. It quoted his father as saying that boxes of pet snakes were still at the house.

Minoan Snake Goddess Christopher L. C. E. Witcombe Following his discussion of the snake as a household deity, Evans comments on the similarity in the position of the snake raising its head above the hat of the principal "Snake Goddess" (Evans here ignoring the fact that this particular detail of the figurine is his own reconstruction - see Evans's "Snake Goddess" ) and that of the Egyptian uraeus (rearing cobra snake) on the head of Hathor and other Egyptian goddesses. In particular, Evans tentatively links the "Snake Goddess" with the Egyptian Goddess Wazet (i.e. Wadjyt), the snake goddess of the Nile Delta, but does not pursue the connection. It is clear that the Minoans borrowed much their culture and various cult practices from Egypt. Numerous Egyptian objects of one kind or another were found by Evans at Knossos. The most spectacular discovery was the lower part of diorite statue of a seated Egyptian figure identified from the hieroglyphic inscriptions as a priest of Wadjyt (or Wadjet; written as Wazet by Evans; and as Uatchet, or Uatchit, by Budge [see Budge in the BIBLIOGRAPHY As was noted above, sacred to Wadjyt was the cobra snake which in the form of the

Page Last Updated : June 07,2004 Q Are there snake charmers in India? A Yes. There are snake charmers all over India, who provide street side entertainment. The snakes are typically king cobras (those with a hood and S mark; they are deadly poisonous). The charmer blows a horn (called Pungi) to which the snake seems to dance. The snake charmers also exhibit other types of snakes like pythons, and sometimes arrange Snake Vs. Mongoose fights for the audience. Q Why are snakes worshipped in India A Snakes have a very important role in Indian mythologies and beliefs (you can see their depiction in this section at Kamat's Potpourri). Snakes are both feared and revered in India. There is a festival called Naga Panchami that is dedicated for the purpose. Q Are the Indian snakes poisonous A There are both poisonous as well as non-poisonous snakes in India; the viper, the krait, the cobra, and the king cobra have venom and are deadly. The Indian children are taught to identify these snakes in the schools and also to provide first aid in the case of bites. Q How does the snake charmer make the cobra dance?

The following is a list of what are currently considered the most toxic snake venoms. It is important to keep in mind that regarding venoms, the most deadly snake, and the most dangerous snake are two entirely different concepts. Some of the snakes with the most toxic venom, i.e., the most deadly rarely bite people. In fact, the sea snakes are generally quite docile. The title of most dangerous snake, i.e., the one that kills the most people, would go to different animals than those listed below. In the United States the coral snake has a very toxic venom but has killed few people because it is small, secretive and gentle. The most dangerous are the rattlesnakes like the Eastern and Western Diamondbacks. These rattlesnakes are large, have large venom glands, are relatively common, and are more likely to hold their ground and bite. In Africa common Egyptian Cobras, Saw-scaled Vipers, and Puff Adders would be the most dangerous for the same reasons listed for the rattlesnakes above. In Asia the common Cobra and the Russell's Viper are the snakes that kill the most people.

A Cobra Snakes And More Snakes
By James E. McEldowney

Have you ever seen a snake? There are good snakes and bad ones. Snakes do not have legs but they can slide across the grass very fast. They are different than other creatures. Would you like to hear some of my snake stories? The earliest snake I can remember was called a garter snake. It doesn't hurt people and may help them because it catches rats and mice and other pests. I found this snake in my yard when I was nine years old. Somehow I caught it and carried it to school. You should have heard the girls yell and run when I chased them with it. Not long after that I went with my father out to the high hills along the Missouri River. The hills were called bluffs. We climbed almost to the top of the bluffs to a place called Rattle Snake Den. Rattle Snakes are bad snakes. A person can even die from a snake bite. My father said he did not think there were any snakes there so we walked right through the den and came out on top of the hill. He was right. We didn't see any snakes. When I was 12 I worked on a farm and one of the things I did was to drive horses that pulled what they called a mower. It cut the grass to make hay which was fed to cattle and other animals. A man was also mowing, just ahead of me. All of a sudden my mower stopped mowing. I got off the mower to see what was wrong. There where the cutter cut grass was a large snake. It must have been hiding in the grass and as I came along it must have lifted up its head and wham! the mower cut it on the neck. It was a very big snake, so big that the cutter couldn't cut through the neck and it got stuck in the mower. That was what stopped my mower.
