COBRA SNAKE
The Cobra is the most feared of all poisonous snakes. Cobra De Capello is Portuguese for ‘Hooded Snake’.At an average length of six feet, with a brownish skin, glaring eyes, darting tongue, hissing breath and spoonshaped hood, it rates as one of the most dangerous snakes in the world.
It is a silent, stealthy hunter feeding on insects, lizards, frogs and small mammals, such as rats and mice. The Cobra snake favours warm, dry regions where water is readily available. As the cobra grows it sheds it skin.
The cobra's venom glands are essentially modified salivary glands, through which the cobra injects its victim. Even given its dangerous properties the Cobra still remains the favourite of snake charmers. Death from cobra snakebite is one of the oldest fates of mankind. In ancient Egypt every ‘healer’ was required to know the repertoire of spells for conjuring the poison of every serpent.
Pharaoh would often wear a representation of the wide hooded Cobra on his crown as an emblem of royalty. From this position the cobra was said to be able to defend the king.

A Cobra Encounter In Vietnam By LTC Curtis E. Harper, USAR (Retired) In December of 1968, I was assigned to Charlie Company, 3rd Platoon, 1 st of the 50 th Infantry, 173 rd Airborne Brigade in Binh Dinh Province, South Vietnam. I was an infantry platoon leader and our job was to perform search and clear patrols and set up ambushes for the enemy. Many times while on patrol we would encounter snakes. Some members of my platoon told of snakes crawling over them during nighttime ambushes, having no idea whether the snake was venomous or not. That could make for a long night. On January 26 th , 1969, we were patrolling in the Vietnamese central highlands, southeast of the infamous Mang Yang pass. My infantry platoon was working on a search and destroy mission and it was a cool, sunny morning. We were in a high plateau area that had been fertile farmland years prior, before war had forced the people to move to settlement areas. The area was overgrown with large fields of elephant grass and half acre patches of thick vegetation. The jungle was trying desperately to take back over, but fires started by artillery and bombs held back the growth of grass and jungle.

Cobra A very poisonous snake native to Africa and Asia. The common Cobra of India and the Egyptian cobra are often used by snake charmers. The large hood of the Indian cobra has a spectacle like pattern . The asiatic king cobra or hamadryad , which can grow to a length of 14 to 18 ft., but its hood has no pattern which it spreads, as does the common Cobra, when agitated or startled. Several of the African species can eject a spray of venom to a distance of at least 6 ft.. The poison of a spitting Cobra of the southern regions of Africa is often aimed at the victim's eyes causing great pain . If not all washed out promptly, it can cause short term blindness . The asiatic Krait , the African mamba , the Australian tiger snake and death adder, and the coral snakes of the new world are related to the Cobra. Cobra (snake) Cobra (snake) , common name for certain members of a family of venomous snakes, known for their intimidating behavior and deadly bite. Cobras are recognized by the hoods that they flare when angry or disturbed; the hoods are created by the elongate ribs that extend the loose skin of the neck behind the cobras' heads. These reptiles are found throughout the Philippines, southern Asia, and Africa. Many species of cobras are natives of Africa. Among them is the spitting, or black-necked, cobra, found from southern Egypt to northern South Africa. This snake can spray its venom from a distance of about 2.4 m (8 ft) into the eyes of its victims, causing temporary blindness and great pain. Varieties of the spitting cobra range in color from dull black to pink, the paler-colored ones marked by a black band around the neck. The ringhals, a different type of spitting cobra confined to southern Africa, is one of the smallest of the cobras, reaching only about 1.2 m (4 ft) in length. It is dark brown or black with ridged, or keeled, scales and pale rings on the neck. The asp, or Egyptian cobra, is found along the northern coast of Africa.

This is to give you an idea of the size you can make them with my plans. You could scale it down for smaller snakes. You can tell I enjoy making them. I got started and just didn't want to quit! Top These plans run $10.00 postage paid in the USA. They are a bit harder to construct, involves no carving, only sanding. I use a 4 inch X 36 inch sander and a dremel rotary tool. Also a drill press and a bandsaw with a 1/8 inch blade, I'm sure a scrollsaw would work too. These make great gifts and toys, but I would encourage you to make a couple of the regular snakes first, to get the experience. If you'd rather, you can just send a check or money order,

A bit tougher to make, Pretty hard puzzle Here are a bunch of maple cobras, I got started making them and was having so much fun, just didn't want to quit!
As you can see, this one isn't quite done, no cape and not sprayed with clear spray. I would seriously advise you to make a couple of regular snakes before you tackle this one, it's a bit tougher to make, lot's of fun though. And that's really what woodwork is all about, right? There's the pussy cat, defending his nap space. Actually he's pretty tough, not going to take any duff off a wooden snake! Top These plans run $10.00 postage paid in the USA. It is a bit harder to construct than my other puzzles, involves no carving, only sanding. I use a 4 inch X 36 inch sander and a dremel rotary tool. Also a drill press and a bandsaw with a 1/8 inch blade, I think a scrollsaw would work too. Be sure to check out my Tips and hints page, couple of good ones there. These make great gifts and toys, kids and grownups love them. If you'd rather buy one already made, just click here.

    Cobra Venom
Among snakes, cobras and coral snakes may be singled out as having a particularly neurotoxic venom; among other animals, the venom of arachnids also falls into the neurotoxic category. The spitting cobra can spray its venom from a distance of about 2.4 (about 8 ft) into the eyes of its victims, causing temporary blindness and great pain. Venom coming in contact with human eyes causes an immediate and severe irritation of the conjunctiva and cornea that, if untreated, may result in permanent blindness. The venom of cobras, a neurotoxin, acts powerfully on the nervous system. With effective serum more available, however, the high death rate from cobra bites in some areas of Asia has decreased. Cobra venom has been used for many years in medical research because it has an enzyme, lecithinase, that dissolves cell walls as well as membranes surrounding viruses. A common misconception is that baby snake are deadlier than adults. While not proven scientifically, it would seem that an adult cobra can control the the amount of venom delivered, if any, with each bite, depending on the threat it feels. A baby snake has no control over the amount of venom delivered by its bite, thus always giving a full dose. A baby cobra is fully able to defend itself in as little as three hours after entering the world. Cobras are completely immune to the venom produced by their species. Note the distinction between venomous and poisonous venomous refers to a creature that has the ability to secrete or utilize it's venom externally, while

    http://www.geocities.com/thesciencefiles/cobra/page.html
Cobra is the common name for members of the family of venomous snakes, Elapidae, known for their intimidating looks and deadly bite. These reptiles are found throughout the Philippines, southern Asia, and Africa. Cobras are recognized by the hoods behind their heads. A cobra opens this hood when it is angry or disturbed; the hood is created by the extension of the ribs behind the cobra's head.
Cobras will seldom attack unprovoked. When threatened, however, the cobra will make full use of its menacing appearance and deadly venom. Cobras are famous for their use by Oriental snake charmers because they are intelligent, respond well to visual cues, and are of spectacular appearance.
Cobras are common in Asia and Africa, and there are different types in each location.
    ASIAN COBRAS:
The King Cobra , at up to 18 feet long, is the world's longest poisonous snake. It can have a head as big as a man’s hand, and can stand tall enough to look you in the eye. Its venom, although not as potent as other cobras, is very deadly because more of it ... up to 7 ml, is delivered with each bite.
