Nothing More Than a Consultant? Most coach training is nothing more than repackaged problem solving used by consulting. Let's face it, the world doesn't need more people to "tell other people what to do" and then to pick up behind them like their mothers. Over the years, I've grown frustrated with the coaching industry as it has plunged itself into nothing more than a battle for fixing people, advising people and "mothering" people. Quite frankly, I gave that up years ago and created a methodology that builds capability, NOT CO-DEPENDENCY! Now, along with our newly designed online leadership coaching system, we've completed the first package for business coaches that really makes your life easier and more profitable as a coach. Not only, do you have a great front-end you can offer to your clients in terms of building behavioral competencies many people in business so desperately need, but you learn how to build capability on the back-end with a powerful business coaching methodology called COACH2.

Coaching and Playing Tips Playing Tips
  • When pressing, remember to prepare ahead. Don't use your hands!
  • Also, use your feet and move diagonally to beat the offensive player to where they want to be.
  • Move your feet on defense. Beat the offensive player to the spot.
  • Square up to the basket. Be in a triple threat position as you catch the pass before you shoot.
Coaching Tips - Question and Answer Session
  • Question 783
When we scrimmage as a team, each child has a tendancy to drive or shoot, not pass. We do plenty of passing drills, but they view the scrimmage time as "fool around and be a star" time.
Do you have any suggestions about how to motivate them to be more team oriented in these scrimmages?
  • Answer
Remain firm with this age group. They will walk all over you, if you let them. This age group is just beginning to feel their independence and will try many different ways to gain control over the practice. Make the scrimmage more controlled. Have them execute plays, defense, presses, etc. as they scrimmage. Don't let them get out of hand, rather teach them the proper way to play. Also, the good ole "suicide" (ladder, etc. whatever you want top call it) helps slow down their zest to not follow directions. A little running never hurt a basketball player during practice.

Talking X's and O's- Ask the Coach
Question 277 Question 27 - How do I teach a big man with excellent pivots in the middle but who has trouble catching the entry pass? I have convinced our guards to bounce pass it in if they can but he is still having trouble catching the ball. Is catching the entry something that drilling to death will work or can a shift in big man expectancies be altered? Coach Carlos Arteaga Coach Arteaga, Tip: Teach your player to jump into catching every pass. Another common problem is a post player who exhibits stiff legs and arms. Muscle rigidity makes it difficult to decelerate the ball and absorb extra energy in the ball. Muscle rigidity in the legs means the lack of lower body shock absorbers results in a defender being able to exert force to displace the offensive post from a given position. In both cases rigidity makes it more difficult to catch a pass in the post. Tip: Teach your player to keep on their toes with their ankle, knees, waist, and elbows flexed to allow the body to absorb energy.

http://www.coerver-coaching.com/id/coaching_tips.htm
UNDERSTAND WHY CHILDREN PARTICIPATE IN SOCCER A majority of the reasons children participate in sport are for intrinsic reasons. The top priorities are:
  • To learn and improve their skills To have fun To be with friends To experience the excitement of competition To enhance their physical fitness To demonstrate their competence
Notice that the extrinsic goal of winning and beating others is not at the top of the list. Similarly, when children drop out of soccer, their withdrawal can be traced to the inability of the sport experience to meet their primary motivations for participation. The common reasons are:
  • Failing to learn or improve their skills Not having fun Not being with their friends Lack of excitement, improvisation and creative opportunities Lack of exercise, meaningful movement and fitness improvements Lack of optimal challenges and/or consistent failure
Practical suggestions for coaches:
  • Encourage players to measure their performance by improvements in their own, personal levels of proficiency and ability rather than by comparing themselves to other players or to other teams based on the game outcome. Because children have several reasons for participation and not just one, design practices to meet as many different participation motives as possible (i.e. learning, fun, friendship, fitness, challenge, etc.)

    What Makes a Successful Coach?
Are wins and losses the only measure? By Lawrence Fine In order to define what makes a successful coach, the first thing to be done is to establish parameters to measure "success" in coaching. In a discussion with a friend a few years ago, several possible definitions were advanced. What may be surprising to some is that none of our definitions included a good won/loss record. The first idea we developed was that a successful coach was one who prepared his or her team to play at the next level. The next level could be anything from a higher-level club team, high school varsity or JV, college, state team, region team, national team or some other level – it would be different for each player. Another concept was that a successful coach was one who could teach in a manner that allowed the players to learn and work hard while enjoying themselves at the same time. I realize that many coaches don't believe you can work hard and have fun, but that’s one of the real challenges of being a successful coach. We finally realized that a coach’s success could be determined only by each individual coach, depending on his or her individual situation. However, some of the traits of a successful coach would include the ability to teach the techniques and tactics of the game while at the same time instilling in the players the capacity to love the game.

    For your coach's gym bag:
    • Pump and extra needles String or yarn for impromptu "lines" Toilet paper makes a good line for teaching throw-ins, and is useful for bloody noses, etc. Kleenex and wet wipes 1 or 2 old screw drivers or butter knives for cleaning cleats Extra pair of shoelaces Extra pair of shinguards Extra water bottle (reuse gatorade squeeze bottles) Keep that ball that won't hold air; it's great to have a softie to teach heading Players coming straight from school? Coaches should hold onto balls (maybe even shinguards and/or water bottles) Bring a permanent marker to first few practices, label players' balls, shinguards, shoes, whatever might get lost... A spare mouthguard can be adjusted to fit players reasonably well with a thermos of hot water Bring scrunchies, scarves, etc. to hold back hair, especially on windy days Players will appreciate even your mismatched mittens or gloves on bitter days, ditto your cast off sweatshirts or knit caps Knit gloves with leather palms or strips make a good second set of goalie gloves

Coach K's advice to new coaches:
    • Make it fun for the kids so the enjoyment of the sport will always come first. They should be thinking, 'I don't have to get a scholarship right now, I don't have to be a star, I can just enjoy playing.'
    • Keep it simple.

Coaching Tips From The CKTVC Staff Communicating Effectively We need to make sure we communicate with our players and parents effectively on and off the court
as well as with other coaches, to learn from those more experienced and to teach those who are less.
Communication is vital to every program's success. 4 Words to Eliminate in Coaching: But - You - Can't - Try One thing to remember when it comes to communicating, the perception of the listener is what eventually determines the outcome, not the intention of the speaker. With just a little effort, we can improve our communication skills, get our point across more effectively, and avoid bruising of those fragile athlete egos along the way. When attempting to deliver constructive criticism, we often sever the construction from the criticism by inserting a but between the two. "That was a great effort, but next time try to get the ball to the setter." All the player remembers is "Next time get the ball to the setter.", thus the praise has been lost. By connecting the two with a more positive twist, both the praise and the instruction are absorbed, "That was a great effort, and next time we'll definitely get a swing on it."

Tip for August 2001 We hear a lot these days about balancing our lives. I'm sure you can relate to that you probably have a job/business, family, friends, activities, commitments, hobbies. Take a break for a moment...stand up on one foot. While you're standing this way, be aware of what you're noticing. Now, change feet, and notice what you notice. Finally, stand on the toes of both feet. What do you notice now? You might notice that:
    • it's hard to achieve balance it requires constant adjustment to remain balanced it's easier to be balanced in some positions than in others
Just as there's a lot going on when you're trying to balance your body, there's a lot going on when you're trying to balance your life. What can this little exercise teach you about balancing your life? Balance is a fluid, dynamic process that requires you to make choices and adjustments over and over again. Life shifts continuously, and fortunately, you have the ability to shift with it. This month, track the choices and adjustments you make in one area of your life. The important thing to remember is that you can always revisit a decision and make a different choice. If you become comfortable with change, and know that you have control over your decisions and your adjustments, you'll look forward to creating a more satisfying and balanced life.

Usually, mock checks show up in window envelopes. Yes, that takes more work, but "big time" direct marketers do it because it gets results. Generally, the envelope has an official look and a street address return address (no company name). You can vary the concept any way you want. Testing is paramount, as always. Whatever you do, the envelope is important. Generally, if it looks like it's coming from an "insurance salesman," it will drop dramatically in response.

    78. Top Ten Tips For Coaching Kids In Sports
Top Ten tips for coaching Kids in Sports, By Rick Wolff. Sometimes, Coach, you might be wrong and the parent is right. 3) teach - and enforce - sportsmanship.
    http://www.bcminorbaseball.org/top_ten_tips_for_coaching_kids_i.htm
2003 Executive Member Associations The Chronicle Tournaments ... Home Top Ten Tips for Coaching Kids in Sports, By Rick Wolff Although there are lots of wonderful coaches involved in working with our kids today, the sad truth is, there are too many coaches who just don't have the right perspective on how to work with youngsters. Along those lines, based upon my writings from COACHING KIDS FOR DUMMIES (IDG Books, $19.95), here's a quick checklist of what every coach should always keep in mind when coaching young athletes: 10) As the head coach, always be in command! That is, always present yourself as the authority figure of the team - the man or woman who has the last word. Sometimes, a coach will try and act like he or she is "one of the players" or "one of the players' peers or best friend." This is not very effective. Yes, you can reach out to the kids and let them know you're there for them - but it's very difficult to be "one of the guys" and then have to turn around and discipline one of them. In short, be the teacher of the team - not one of the players. 9) Always remember that fun is definitely part of each game and practice! If you run your team into the ground during grueling practice sessions and never let them have a chance to smile, relax, or blow off some steam, you'll soon discover that you have transformed "play" into "work" for your players. And work without any play soon becomes pure drudgery. Coach, let the kids get their work done on the field and then let them have some time to goof off a bit in practice. Come game time, you'll find that they will be more focused.

Our Mission: "To promote safe, productive, and efficient methods of strength training for high school and collegiate athletes while debunking the Olympic lifting establishment that has engulfed many of our high school and college athletic programs. It is our desire to create better athletes through controlled and intense strength training." October 28 "Difficulties in life are intended to make us better, not bitter." -Dan Reeves Coaching Tip: Points of Emphasis We have had the opportunity this fall to have Rich Putnick, a graduate student at the University of Kansas, serve as an intern for our football strength program. It should be said that Coach Putnick is qualified to work with any sports team football just happens to be the one we are most involved with. Too many people believe that there is a way to train for football that differs from the way one trains for tennis or basketball. This is simply untrue and we try to promote a safe training environment that stresses the development of the athlete regardless of sport. We happen to have a large chalkboard in the front of our weight room. Coach Putnick suggested that we use it to emphasize a point of the day, one thing that we would repeat over and over again to the kids throughout their workout. Today we wrote, "Slow Down Your Negative- No Bouncing!" We discovered that by having just 1 point of emphasis we could really pound home its importance.
