Articles Discussion Board Magazine Coaching Tips: Teach FEEL and kinesthetic awareness. By Terry Laughlin Eric Jones posted this question on the TI Discussion Forum: “I recently started coaching a masters team (my first coaching position) and have run into the problem of re-training several of my swimmers to look down instead of forward. They understand the concepts and TI drills are an integral part of my workouts; but, without fail, when we do "swimming", the heads come up. Does anyone have any suggestions. They don't seem to know when they're doing it. Please help!”
  • every
  • Then have them do a length incorrectly (i.e. looking forward again) and ask how they feel when doing that. Again, get vivid and detailed description of how this changes all their sensations.
  • Next try a drill-swim set, perhaps 16 x 25 with the odd 25s Skating and the even 25s swimming. The sole instruction for this set is to devote 100 percent of your attention to this list of sensations they just described and try to make those sensations be the same on the swim length as on the drill length.
  • Now try a set of whole-stroke repeats, perhaps 8 x 25. Instruct them to start each length with the head hidden, but to gradually raise it for a few strokes in mid-pool, then align it again at the end of the lap. Compare how each feel.vs. how it FEELS when they are looking forward.

    (April 13)
    By Lori Hadacek , B.F.A.
In 1287 in Umbria, Italy, Lady Emilia and Lord Parisio had planned a grand celebration for the birth of their long-awaited first child. But when the baby was born, no bells were rung; no feast was given. For the baby was not the "perfect" child of which they'd dreamed. Instead, she was a homely, blind hunchback, with one leg considerably shorter than the other. Lady Emilia and Lord Parisio could find no room in their hearts for their baby, and wanted nothing to do with her. But a kindly servant girl took her and had her baptized "Margaret," which means "pearl." When she was six years old, Margaret's father led his daughter to a secluded spot in the woods and had her locked in a cell. Although she suffered terribly in that small, dank, stone prison, Margaret received the Grace to transcend her surroundings. At a tender age, she saw God's plan for her, which she revealed to a visiting priest: "Jesus was rejected even by His own people, and God is letting me be treated the same so that I can follow Our dear Lord more Closely." She endured 14 years in her cell, growing ever closer to Christ.

    http://www.coach.ca/e/tips/hockey/hockey9_attitudes.htm
Hockey Tips Teach Attitudes First, Skills Second What is the First Commandment of Coaching? If you said winning, better read on. Fair Play is the First Commandment, and is based on this Golden Rule: treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. You and the parents of your players are responsible for instilling this Fair Play attitude. Everyone must show respect for rules, referees, teammates and opposing players and coaches. You can start by setting a good example. Don't argue with referees or opposing players and coaches, and teach your players to never check or hit in a manner that might cause injury to an opponent. There's nothing wrong with winning, but overemphasizing it can lead to decreased enjoyment and restricted participation for players, and result in undesirable behaviour and high anxiety levels. Never ridicule or condemn your players for making mistakes or losing games, and don't overplay your talented players. All players have a right to fair ice time. Always consider the welfare of your players first, by making certain they are participating in a safe environment. Ensure that facilities, equipment and practices are safe and appropriate to the age and ability level of your players. Downplay toughness and intimidation, and stress that players should never hit an opponent from behind.

UMPIRE NAME CALLING - It is important to build a good rapport with the umpire or umpires working your game. Calling them "blue" often does not help in this endeavor. I suggest that you address them by their names. I am not good at remembering names so I always write their name in my left palm. I will always address them by their first name when I ask a question or have conversation between innings.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A GOOD COACH By Coach Gordie Gillespie
Ripon College This list of tips on coaching is by one of college baseball's legendary coaches. Coach Gordie Gillespie. The advice applies to all coaches, from summer travel teams to high school and on to college. Common sense approach to dealing with your players, staff and faculty
During his multi-faceted career, Gordie Gillespie has coached not only baseball, but also football, and men's and women's basketball. His Lewis College baseball team had back-to-back-to-back NAIA World Series titles from 1974-76 among eight total tournament appearances and a 634-241 record in 24 campaigns. Coach Gillespie had eight additional World Series appearances with the College of St. Francis. He became college baseball's all-time winningest coach in 1993, and the season ended with his club earning the school's only national sports title. Coaching in the Major League
There is a noticeable difference in coaching a major league team compared to a rookie or even minor league team. It can be just as much fun for the coaches and the kids, but in order to relax and have fun you need to be prepared
There is more competitiveness and seriousness to the majors. Opposing coaches seem to know a lot more than you and the umpires are not as forgiving as they were in the rookie league. You are expected to know and follow the rules. You and your team will have a much better time and be more successful if your coaching staff is prepared and not trying to hoof it. A few tips to help…
Familiarize yourself with the rules. They are enforced in the majors. Pay particular attention to the substitution rule for this is an area where mistakes are often made.
Get to the field early for games . Get the fielding practice in. Have your team ready for the game. Umpires and opposing coaches hate delays. There are strict rules about this. Make sure your players are there early. Have you batting order planned in advance of the game . You want to trade line-ups about 10 minutes before the game. Don't be trying to write it up at the last minute. You'll feel rushed and miss the fielding practice. Know who your substitutes are in advance, when they will go in and for whom. Your line-up must be presented to the opposing coach with name, uniform number, and position.

    Coaching in the Teeball League
The goal of the Teeball program is to teach the kids the basic fundamentals of the game and to have fun while doing it! The first half-hour should be spent teaching the kids how to throw, catch, and field. You may find many of the kids have played very little. If you have an assistant, it may be good to split the kids into two groups to keep their interest. Suggested drill
    • Teach the kids how to hold their glove to catch a ball that is thrown to either side of them or for balls thrown high and low.
Teach the proper mechanics of pitching; you can be the catcher and have the kids' pitch to you.
Have the kids' line up at the pitcher's mound area and hit or throw them ground balls. The can practice throwing the ball to first base.
You can throw them short pop flies so that they can practice their catching. You may want to use a tennis ball during this drill.
Practice hitting off the tee before the game starts. Teach them proper stance and how to hold the bat. You can then have them hit a few balls against the screen.

The last 45 minutes should be spent playing a game with the two teams scheduled. Follow the guidelines as specified in the '
