Cogeneration is the use of a single energy source to generate both electrical and thermal power. Early this year, Raley's and Hess Microgen began testing an onsite cogeneration system that provides much of the energy for a Raley's Superstore in Fairfield, CA. After six months of operation and monitoring, Hess Microgen redesigned and rebuilt the system this fall in an effort to increase its efficiency. Utility Maps Cogeneration Services The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Cogeneration Facility is one of the most modern energy production facilities of its kind. This environmentally friendly state-of-the art facility was completed in 1992, with a primary purpose of generating steam for distribution throughout the UNC Campus. The UNC cogeneration concept involves the production of electricity and the generation of steam simultaneously. The steam passes through a turbine, which drives a 28 megawatt generator, is extracted again and used for heating, cooling, and other energy needs. This combination results in an overall thermal efficiency for this facility of twice that of any plant built solely for the purpose of power generation. In addition to maximizing energy efficiency, cogeneration significantly minimizes any environmental impact. Our Cogeneration Facility is located on West Cameron Avenue, approximately a half-mile from the heart of the University campus. As a result of the plant's location in a residential area, much emphasis is placed on aesthetics.
