The Queen's Business Clubs are associations of Commerce and MBA graduates in Toronto, Calgary, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa and Kingston. The Clubs organize gatherings each year centering on current business topics, often in combination with a luncheon or a reception. In addition to the obvious attraction of hearing high-profile and interesting business speakers, the Clubs exist to consolidate relationships between the School of Business and its alumni and, most importantly, to provide opportunities for alumni to rejuvenate old friendships and forge new networks. The particular blend of events offered by each club reflects the distinct nature of each city in which the Clubs are located. The School of Business acts as a central linkage, offering a number of services to the Clubs to assist new Club initiatives and to promote effective liaison between alumni. To emphasize its own connection with alumni, the School of Business tries to send delegates to as many Club events as possible. For information on joining the Queen's Business Club in your city or on how to become involved after graduation, please contact Laurie Ross, the School's Alumni Co-ordinator. The Use of Public School Facilities by Religious Clubs or Groups: Guidelines for School Districts General Guidelines: Secondary Schools During school hours: A religious group may meet only if it otherwise complies with the Equal Access Act. That is to say, if the school allows non-curriculum related clubs (e.g., a service club), the school must allow religious clubs, but only if they are student-run, student-initiated clubs that meet during non-curriculum time. There may be no faculty or outside control over the group (beyond maintaining routine order and control). After school hours: An outside religious club or organization may meet in the school under the following circumstances:
  • If the group is student-initiated and student-run, it may meet pursuant to the Equal Access Act. The group may meet only if the school allows other outside clubs or organizations to meet at the same time. The school must assume the duty of ensuring that it does not appear to be endorsing or disapproving of religion.

Civil Rights
The Use of Public School Facilities by Religious Clubs or Groups: Guidelines for School Districts Introduction In June, 2001, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a Christian youth group that teaches children to "give God first place" in their lives must be allowed to meet in public schools after class hours. What does the Court's decision in Good News v. Milford require from elementary and secondary school officials? What is the current state of the law regarding the use of public school facilities by religious clubs or groups? Educators and parents are encouraged to call their local ADL regional office to discuss these matters further. While the questions that may arise can be difficult, the underlying principle is fairly simple: a school district must never, in whatever it does, appear to endorse or disapprove of religion. Of course, what 'endorsement' or 'disapproval' means in practice depends heavily on the context of the activity at issue. As an educator or a parent, you must constantly ask yourself: would the average person think, from looking at what the school is doing, that the school is communicating a message in favor of or against religion? If the answer to this question is yes, then the activity is impermissible. Next: General Guidelines - Elementary Schools

NEWS RELEASE August 27, 2003
FUTURE OF BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS IN COLORADOAND THE IMPORTANCE OF AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS IN ADDRESSING JUVENILE CRIME AND YOUTH VIOLENCE PREVENTION
Attorney General Salazar noted recent research on the issue of juvenile crime. Research studies reveal that violent crimes by juveniles peak in the afternoon at 3 pm and remain high until 9 pm. By providing a safe and secure environment during these peak hours of violence, after-school programs may provide children and adolescents with an opportunity for constructive learning and positive development as an alternative to high-risk behaviors and violent activities. "It is critical that we provide young people with positive and safe environments where they can spend time after school before their parents are home. Too many parents struggle with the dilemma of working and trying to monitor their children's after-school activities," said Salazar. "In my experience as Attorney General and as a father, I know that our investments in after school programs and early childhood education are critical in addressing the challenges facing our young people and families," said Salazar. Attorney General Moore has long been an advocate for youth and youth violence prevention efforts. Attorneys General Moore and Salazar co-chaired the National Association of Attorneys General Children's Committee. Attorney General Moore is most well known, however, for his lead role in the litigation against the major tobacco companies in the 1990s.

The students experience a wide variety of environmental activities provided by the Center's staff with assistance by McKinley personnel.
Diversity Club
We talk about different cultures, do activities from around the world and work to promote the idea that we're all more alike than we are different. Kids who care about each other and the world around them are what Diversity Club is all about.
Peer Mediation
Peer Mediation is a program in which students are given in-depth training in conflict resolution skills designed to help other students solve their conflicts. Peer mediators meet throughout the year with advisors as well as provide peer mediations for students. Other activities they may be involved in are providing classrooms with a chance to have mediators visit their classrooms. School-based peer mediation provides a time and a place for students who have a disagreement to come together and "talk out" the problem so that they can resolve it. By setting aside a time and a place for resolving conflict, students learn that conflict is natural and acceptable, and they must make some thoughtful choices about managing their own conflict.
Safety Patrol
The McKinley Safety Patrol is comprised of fifth and sixth graders. A rotating schedule is developed between classrooms. Specific information will be provided during the school year.

SCHOOL CLUBS AND AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
The school offers a wide range of activities, both after school and during lunchtime. Some of these are staffed by professionals from outside organisations whilst others are staffed by teachers and parents. Some of the activities require a fee such as Ballet, Gymnastics, Netball, Football, Violin, Piano, Judo, Basketball, Dutch School and Cubs. Each academic year a variety of clubs is offered on a termly basis, to reflect the interests of the children and parent volunteers. These include such clubs as Chess, Science, Chinese Painting, Choir, Musical Band and French. Children are given the opportunity to select those which interest them. As places are limited, it is not always possible to place children in selected clubs. Once a decision has been made to participate in a particular club, it is the child's responsibility to attend the activity. If a child is no longer able to keep that commitment a written statement from the parent or guardian is needed.
