Clouds in Northeast, rain in Midwest
Satellite image of the United States taken Friday at 2 a.m. EDT. Story Tools (AP) Clouds hovered over the Northeast on Thursday and a weak cold front brought light rain and even some snow to the Midwest. Skies were partly cloudy across most of the Eastern Seaboard, lower Mid-Atlantic, Tennessee Valley, Gulf Coast and Southeast. A cold front also moved through the northern and central Plains, bringing partly cloudy to overcast skies from Kansas and Missouri north to the Dakotas and Minnesota. Light snow fell in Russell, Kansas. A ridge of high pressure brought partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies to most of the West. Scattered rain and snow fell in the mountains of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, and isolated wind gusts hit 50 mph. Rain in Washington was heavy at times, with more than an inch in some places. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from 23 degrees in Hayward, Wisconsin, and Brookings, South Dakota, to 86 in Key West, Florida.

Halloween treat for East with sunny and mild weather, clouds elsewhere
Satellite image taken Friday at 10:15 p.m. EST Story Tools (AP) The eastern third of the nation Friday basked under sunny skies and mild temperatures for Halloween, while overcast and chilly weather dominated the Midwest and Plains states. The western third of the country was cold and cloudy. Midday temperatures ranged in the 70s across the South, Gulf Coast, throughout the Southeast and Tennessee Valley and mid-Atlantic states, while the Northeast, New England, Ohio Valley and Great Lakes enjoyed temperatures in the 50s and 60s. But for much of the Plains, Midwest, Missouri Valley and Ozarks, overcast and cool conditions dominated. Scattered flurries were reported across the Dakotas and Minnesota by midday. Some patchy drizzle fell across portions of Wisconsin, northern Illinois and south into Texas and Arkansas. Over the western third of the country, high pressure was responsible for partly to mostly cloudy skies. Cold and windy conditions were reported across Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. Some scattered light snow sprinkled southern Wyoming, with up to 2 inches of accumulation by midday. Partly to mostly sunny skies with chilly conditions prevailed over Washington and Oregon. Cloudy skies and scattered light rain or snow showers also were reported in northern California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado. The Southwest and southern Rockies had dry and sunny conditions. Dry weather in Southern California was no help to firefighters battling wildfires.

Dear friends, I am the "young lady" who took this picture (below) about 20 years ago while on the way to my father's home in Kentucky. We were driving through the Smoky Mts.but it wasn't storming. I just love clouds and the sky and I was taking indescriminate shots of the sky as we drove. While it is true that we never saw what I had snapped until after they were developed, it was not the developer who pointed it out to us, it was a dear friend to whom we were showing all of our vacation shots. He said, "Oh my gosh!! Look at this! Did you see this?!?!?" We had not... but afterwards, how can you see anything else?!?!!? Imagine my shock to see this picture used in this way?!! I am so delighted that many thousands more will be able to see it this way - and hopefully it will impact them as much as the thousands of others to whom we have given

Smog clouds view from space station
Mikhail Tyurin, left, Frank Culbertson, center and Vladimir Dezhurov LONDON, England The Earth is becoming less blue and more blurred when viewed from space, because of increased levels of smog, astronauts say. United States astronaut Frank Culbertson, who currently is in command of international space station Alpha, said Earth is becoming less clear as forests are burned and gas emissions rise. He said the view from space has changed markedly since his first mission in 1990. "There is smoke and dust in wider spread areas than we have seen before, particularly as areas like Africa dry up in certain regions,'' he told the BBC. "I have seen changes in what comes out of some of the rivers, in land usage. We see areas of the world that are being burned to clear land, so we are losing lots of trees." He said the changes were a cause for concern. "We have to be very careful how we treat this good Earth we live on," he added.

Row clouds ancient library project
The new library aims to live up to the tradition of its predecessor Story Tools
ALEXANDRIA, Egypt One of the world's first and most celebrated centres of learning, the library of Alexandria, is being reopened in Egypt amid controversy. About 3,000 dignitaries from around the world are expected to attend Wednesday's opening of the "Bibliotheca Alexandrina," whose ancient roots go back more than 2,000 years, including Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, France's President Jacques Chirac and President Carlo Ciampi of Italy. But critics say valuable antiquities from the original Greek city of Alexandria were destroyed in the construction and the project amounts to an expensive gimmick which does little to improve education in a developing country of 68 million. However, Alexandrians think the library the result of a $200 million, 20-year old project backed by the U.N. cultural body UNESCO and many countries could do a lot to revive the fortunes of the city that houses one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Pharos lighthouse. Egyptian journalist Hanan Samaha explained: "People are very excited about it and everyone feels it is an asset.

Game Mods
By Cory Arcangel Introduction: Recently I hacked a Mario Brothers Cartridge and erased everything but the clouds. This continues work being carried out by myself and your favorite BEIGE representatives Paul Davis, Joe Beuckman, and Joe Bonn. This page is a tutorial explaining how / why the work was made. I have chosen to present my motives behind the work by adding my thoughts about the project as comments in the source code. As a programmer [not a very good one, though a programmer none the less] my thoughts and motives are most easily exemplified by my code. Also: thanks to 21C for letting me post this. Thank you, Cory Arcangel / BEIGE SOURCE CODE [with comments]: Below I will go through the source code line by line. The idea here is to simply write a program that will take the clouds from Mario Brothers and scroll them across the screen. Here comes the first line of code:

Mideast war clouds global outlook
By Geoff Hiscock
CNN Asia Business Editor
China produces some of its own oil, but like Japan, Korea and Taiwan, is dependent on Mideast oil imports Story Tools
HONG KONG, China (CNN) A war in the Middle East could cut global growth by as much as one percentage point next year, according to a World Bank expert. Richard Newfarmer, lead author of the bank's 2003 Global Economic Prospects report, told CNN on Thursday that the impact of conflict in Iraq was difficult to predict because of uncertainty about the length of any hostilities and the reaction of oil producers. But he said the bank had included the possibility of a Middle East war in its "low case scenario" and concluded it could slice growth by as much as one percentage point. Given that growth this year is likely to be just 1.7 percent and the bank is predicting a rise to 2.5 percent in 2003, Newfarmer said a cut of this size would be a "severe impact". Releasing its 2003 economic outlook in Washington, the World Bank said that a hesitant, uneven recovery and uncertainties in global financial markets meant there was still a danger the global rebound might quickly lose momentum.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION For several months now, I have been aware of Tokyopop 's licensing Wish
Come August 2002, it will be time for me to shut-down my translation section - my reaction is late, but I wanted to support this series as long as I possibly could. I will continue to do so in the future, however not by offering any more scanned translations. With the upcoming US-release, there will no longer be any necessity for my efforts. I spent an entire year - spring to winter 2000 - translating the text and scanning the images - this is why it's important to me that everybody acknowledges the final possibility of downloading this wonderful shoujo-manga. All translation files will be deleted Friday, August 2nd Clouds Up can continue being a source of information even without the scanned translations. Cheers,
