Tornadoes Tornadoes are extremely severe storms that are highly destructive. They appear as a dark, funnel-shaped cloud of violently rotating air that extends down to earth. The funnel appears dark as a result of sucking up debris. The power and destruction of tornadoes is mind boggling! Tornadoes pick up debris that includes rocks, tree limbs, parts of buildings, etc. When the edge of the tornado funnel slams into a building, the debris acts like a circular saw ripping through everything it impacts. Tornadoes have been known to pick up automobiles, horses, and whole trees. In one very strange incident, a tornado in Minnesota (year 1931) lifted an 83-ton railroad car containing 117 passengers and moved it 80 feet. The car was dropped into a ditch and all the passengers survived. The following table shows the some of the most damaging tornadoes that have occurred in the United States: Killer Tornadoes of the USA Date Location Comments May 27, 1896

The Topic:
Clouds Easier - Clouds are large white or gray objects in the sky. Clouds are a collection of very small drops of water or tiny pieces of ice that are held in the air. Harder - A cloud is a mass of small water droplets or tiny ice crystals that float in the air. Clouds are formed of water that has evaporated from rivers, lakes, oceans, or moist soil and plants. Some clouds are white and fleecy; others are dull gray or black sheets that darken the ground beneath them. Most clouds continually move and change shape. Clouds change as parts evaporate in dryer air or they are moved and reshaped by wind and air currents. Clouds are an important part of earth's weather. Clouds carry water that falls to the earth's surface as rain and snow to then support all forms of life. Clouds can sometimes bring destruction in the form of hail or tornadoes.

http://www.met.tamu.edu/class/Metr304/Exer10dir/classification.html
CLASSIFICATION
OF CLOUDS
Clouds are continuously in a process of change and appear, therefore in an infinite variety of forms. It is possible, however, to define a limited number of characteristic forms , frequently observed all over the world, into which clouds can be broadly grouped. A classification of the characteristic forms of clouds, in terms of "genera," "species" and "varities" has been established. Intermediate or transitional forms, although observed fairly frequently, have lesser longevity and their appearance is not very different from that indicated in the definitions of the characteristic forms. Finally, there exists a group of clouds, rarely or occasionally observed, not included in the following classification. Some of these "special clouds" consist for the greater part or in their entirety of non-aqueous liquid or solid particles. The definition of a cloud given above is therefore not applicable to all special clouds. Included in the "special" clouds are the nacreous clouds which by day resemble pale cirrus, but after sunset, are characterized by brilliant colors. They occur at altitudes between 21 and 30 kilometers (70,000 and 100,000 feet). The physical constitution of nacreous clouds is still unknown. However, the simultaneous occurrence of various diffraction colors in more or less irregular patterns indicates the presence of minute particles, possibly spherical ice particles.

Last Updated June 2002
This page aims to provide information about how volcanic ash clouds affect aircraft, and how to avoid this hazard. The detrimental effects of volcanic ash clouds need to be understood by the public because ignorance could lead to disaster. If an airplane flies into a volcanic cloud, the silicate particles in the cloud enter the engines and melt, which can lead to engine damage and malfunction and to many other kinds of aircraft damage. Although no deaths have yet resulted, this is quite possible.
