62. HOW ARE CLOUDS NAMED AND WHO NAMED THEM?
How are clouds named and who named them? What are the different classificationsof clouds? Howard noted that there are three basic shapes to clouds
http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/Flagstaff/science/clouds.htm
How are clouds named and who named them?
Clouds form when the temperature of the air reaches the condensation point, which is the point at which water vapor (which is an invisible gas) becomes a liquid. When it reaches this point, the liquid collects on the dust particles in the air and become visible. We call the results clouds, unless the clouds form at the ground surface, in which case we call it fog. Various factors influence the exact point at which condensation can occur, such as the air pressure at a given altitude, the moisture content of the air, and the air temperature. In most cases, air temperature is the most important factor.
Who named the cloud types?
Clouds held a particular fascination for a young Englishman named Luke Howard (1773-1864). His father had sent him to grammar school at Burford, a village to the west of London. But Luke was more interested in the books about nature than in volumes of the Greek and Latin classics. Before 1800, observers spoke of clouds only as "essences" floating in the sky. Clouds had no names and were not well understood. The nature and behavior of atmospheric gases, such as oxygen and nitrogen, were just being investigated in the laboratories of Great Britain and Europe. In Luke Howard's school years, high-level dust from volcanic eruptions in Iceland and Japan caused brilliant sunrises and sunsets. To Howard's logical mind, clouds and complicated halos must be the result of cause and effect in the natural order. Luke wanted to know more.

Volume Clouds by Rory Hallman
After you are through with this tutorial you will know how to create realistic clouds with volume fog.
Volume clouds are processor intensive when rendering. This file can be downloaded at the bottom of the page.
Step 1:
For volume clouds to work you must first define the limits of the scene. For the renderer to know when and where
to stop rendering you must create a backdrop. A booleaned sphere or a box works fine. For my example I will use a booleaned
sphere. Make a hemisphere with a radius of 50 and 16 segments.
Click on the scale button.
Scale the sphere down 10% while holding shift. 3dsmax will ask you if you want to clone the object, select copy and click ok.
Move the inner sphere so it is offset with the outer sphere. Step 2: Next boolean the spheres together.
Select the outer sphere. Under geometry pick compound objects. Select boolean then pick copy and select the inner hemisphere. You now have made a good backdrop.

The setting of the Clouds requires two doors in the skene, one representing Strepsiades's house and the other, the Thinkery, both in the city of Athens. The play begins with Strepsiades and Pheidippides sleeping in their beds. Since the ancient Greek theater had no curtain, these two men in their beds had to be carried out in full view of the audience by stagehands (probably slaves) and placed in front of one of the doors of the skene representing Strepsiades's house. The audience was no doubt expected to imagine that this was an indoor scene, because it was not usual for Greeks to sleep outside. This assumption is strengthened by the fact that, since Pheidippides is sleeping under five blankets, the weather is cool, which would make it even less likely that this was intended as an outdoor scene. The method of presenting the scholarly activities that go on inside the Thinkery is by no means certain. K. J. Dover ( Aristophanic Comedy , Berkeley and Los Angeles, 1972, 107) suggests two possibilities. The students could come out of the door of the skene carrying their apparatus with them, which they could leave behind when they go back inside. Another possibility is that a screen made of canvas and wood with a door, held from behind by stagehands, could conceal the students until Strepsiades asks that the door be opened. The stagehands then could remove this screen revealing the students and their equipment. When the students are ordered to go back inside, they could go through a door of the skene which then would become the door of the Thinkery for the rest of the play.

There is a problem for the reader of texts about China and the Chinese, or of Chinese poems in translation, due to the variation in spelling of Chinese names and terms. This is caused by the many systems of transliteration used in the past when rendering Chinese names into English. It may make it difficult for the reader who knows no Chinese to recognise the same person place or term in different guises. Modern China uses the Pinyin system (e.g. Beijing for Peking) for Romanization of names, which is still unfamiliar and awkward for most readers in the West who are used to the older systems. I have therefore used traditional spellings in this text so that readers can recognise the names when referring to the many translations of Chinese poetry that already exist in English, and to older historical and biographical texts. However readers wanting to refer to modern Atlases of China, for place names, or to other modern texts, will find a comprehensive list of equivalent names and terms towards the end of the text. This includes a Pinyin spelling for each name or term and for place-names the modern province name to assist when referring to an Atlas.

Our Website is being revised, updated, improved, and brought into accord with our vision as potters and keepers of an ancient and vital tradition. We are a small business with our beginnings in a store and studio started 27 years ago in Folsom, California by G.F. and Penny Cloud. We are a collaborative studio with 12 people making the pottery and 4 people running our store. Each person who works here is a unique artist who brings his or her personality and handprint to their work. Each piece we do is different from every other piece. Our style morphs over time as our skills constantly improve and our tastes are constantly refined. A website and catalog, along with archives and pictures tend to say to our patrons that we are reproducing the exact same things over and over and over. To keep our creative instincts alive we do many variations on each item we produce. The pictures on this website are representative, but each piece will be different in many details. We don't discontinue our painted patterns and if we don't have something in stock we can make it for you for no extra charge (it usually takes 6-8 weeks. It may occasionally take longer if the piece has to be redone because it is not up to our standards. Because of many complexities and variables we can never 100% guarantee the completion date of a special order.) The styles do change a bit, the minerals used in the paintings change over time and we add new things to the repertoire.

Types Of Clouds
There are three general cloud types. If you were to look into the sky this very minute, you might see a cloud that doesn't look like the stratus, cumulus or cirrus clouds described below. Clouds are a combination and variations of the three general types. Some variations of the three general types are altocumulus and alto stratus. To learn to identify these other cloud types can be an enjoyable pastime. Stratus Clouds The word stratus comes from the Latin word that means "to spread out." Stratus clouds are horizontal, layered clouds that stretch out across the sky like a blanket. Sometimes a layer of warm, moist air passes over a layer of cool air. Stratus clouds often form at the boundary where these layers meet. Where two such layers of air meet, the warm air is cooled. If the warm air is cooled below its dew point, the excess water vapor condenses to form a blanket - like layer of stratus clouds. If the layers of air are very large, the stratus clouds may extend for many kilometers across the sky. Cumulus Clouds The word cumulus comes from the Latin word for a heap or a pile. Cumulus clouds are puffy in appearance. They look like large cotton balls. Cumulus clouds usually form when warm, moist air is forced upward. As this air rises, it is cooled. If it is cooled below its dew - point temperature, condensation will occur. The size of a cumulus cloud depends on the force of the upward movement of air and the amount of moisture in the air. The largest cumulus clouds are caused by very strong upward movements of warm, moist air. The clouds that produce heavy thunderstorms in summer are a form of cumulus clouds called cumulonimbus. Cumulonimbus clouds may extend upward for hundreds of meters.
