Cirrus clouds
Cirrus clouds are thin, wispy clouds that usually form above 18,000 feet. These clouds are blown by strong westerly winds aloft into streamers known as "mares' tails" Cirrus clouds generally move from west to east across the sky and usually "point" to fair weather. Cirrus clouds form when water vapor undergoes deposition and forms ice crystals. Cirrus clouds are thin because they form in the higher levels of the atmosphere where little water vapor is present. Cirrus clouds over Rockville, Md. Cirrus clouds over Fort Worth, Texas
Cloud combinations with cirrus
  • Cirrostratus: These sheet-like, thin clouds form above 18,000 feet. Cirrostratus clouds are so thin that the sun and moon can be seen clearly through the cloud. Sometimes these clouds are so thin that the only clue to their presence is a halo around the sun or moon. Ice crystals in cirrostratus clouds bend the light rays from the sun or moon as they pass through the cloud, which forms the halo around the sun or moon. Thick cirrostratus clouds give the sky a bright white appearance and often signal rain or snow within 24 hours, especially if they are followed by mid-level clouds.
  • Cirrocumulus: These clouds form above 18,000 feet and appear as small, rounded white puffs that are isolated or in long rows. When the white puffs are in rows, they give the cloud a rippling appearance that distinguishes it from a cirrus or a cirrostratus cloud. Cirrocumulus clouds rarely cover the entire sky. The individual cloud elements that reflect the red or yellow light of a setting sun make this one of the most beautiful of all clouds. The small ripples in a cirrocumulus cloud resemble the scales of a fish, which earned the nickname "mackerel sky".

    Cloud Types
The three basic cloud types are: Cirrus, Stratus, and Cumulus. Nearly every cloud can be roughly classified by these groupings yet many more specific cloud names are used. Some cloud names simply place prefixes and suffixes on the three basic cloud types. For instance altostratus cumulonimbus nimbostratus refers to a persistent rain (or snow) falling from a low stratus cloud.

Cirrus can be created by airplanes which start out as contrails Straus Clouds (row 2) Stratus clouds are found in the lower and middle portions of the atmosphere (ground to 30,000 feet perhaps). Stratus clouds are well known to the folks in San Francisco (and anyone living near coasts) where a persistent stratus cloud deck occupies the sky. When the stratus cloud is in contact with the ground, we usually refer to this as fog. The Climate and Radiation Branch at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center supports a key NASA mission, namely, to understand and protect our home planet. We seek a better understanding of Earth's climate on all time scales, from daily, seasonal and interannual variability through changes on geologic time scales. Our research focuses on atmospheric measurement, numerical modeling, and climate analysis. We investigate atmospheric radiation, both as a driver for climate change and as a tool for the remote sensing of Earth's atmosphere and surface. The Branch research program seeks to better understand how our planet reached its present state, and how it may respond to future drivers, both natural and anthropogenic. Introduction Although not as pronounced as on Earth , clouds are common features on Mars. The Martian atmosphere has only a trace of water vapor; however, the temperature and pressure is such that the atmosphere is usually close to saturation and produces clouds. Even from Earth based telescopes, clouds have been observed by transient brightening on the surface of Mars. Numerous cloud patterns have been seen from the Marineer and Viking spacecraft and have been classified into various categories (Carr, 1981; French et al. 1981):
  • Lee waves . These clouds form in the lee of large obstacles such as mountains, ridges, craters and volcanoes. The air in these regions undergoes wavelike oscillations.
  • Wave clouds . These clouds appear as rows of linear clouds. They are common at the edge of the polar caps.
  • Cloud streets . These clouds exhibit a double periodicity. They appear as linear rows of cumulus-like, bubble-shaped clouds.
  • Streaky clouds . These clouds have a direction without periodicity.
  • Fog or ground hazes . Fog usually occurs in low areas such as valleys, canyons and craters. It forms during the coolest times of the day such as dawn and dusk. Sometimes ground haze is caused by dust in the atmosphere; however, if the atmosphere is clear ground fog can be easily identified.

    Sketches from
    CLOUDS OVER FORTJADE
(Dialogue between Tu Fu and Wang Wei) by Karl Young As an explanatory note, the following plaque from a show of my book art at Minnesota Center for the Book Arts may be useful: CLOUDS OVER FORTJADE Boxed set of screens begun in 1981 and not completed. The texts in this set are based on poems by two T'ang Dynasty Chinese poets, Tu Fu and Wang Wei. Tu Fu was a committed activist poet who took his political offices seriously enough to get himself in trouble. During one period of exile, when he could not take his family with him, one of his children died of starvation. He may be the earliest protest poet whose name we know. In revolutionary China, he has been seen as the nations greatest poet, possibly for the wrong reasons, or at least for reasons he would himself abhor. Wang Wei was a detached mystic. He moved easily in elite circles, and amassed several fortunes, which he used to found and support monasteries. His approach to Buddhism was founded in love of nature and quiet contemplation. Although no samples of his calligraphy have survived, he has been considered one of China's most important calligraphers, and copies of copies of his work have been used as models for generations. Throughout Clouds Over Fortjade the two poets hold an oblique debate, usually with one poet taking one side of each screen, though in a couple instances work by both poets appears on the same side of a screen. Occasionally, the two poets express similar ideas, and occasionally trade positions, with Tu appreciating nature and Wang expressing grief or anger.

    Noctilucent Clouds
Clouds at extremely high altitude, about 85 km, that literally (as the name suggests) shine at night. They form in the cold, summer polar mesopause and are believed to be ice crystals. Because of their high altitude, in a very dry part of the atmosphere, noctilucent clouds are rather an enigma and are being studied by a number of people around the world. The Dark Clouds.
This is a local page for the UK Midlands. covering Paranormal events and Strange incidents around the region.
The idea came about one evening whilst at work. Someone very kindly placed the text printout of an usual incident in front of me saying "This is right up your street".
Unfortunately the incident had occurred two nights before, and I was in no position to approach the individuals involved.
Having seen the X Files, the first incident was placed into a blue folder marked 'X' and was filed away under the title "Nutters /Domestic".
The next week however the file was reopened and a second incident at the same location added.
The 'X' on the front was made bigger and so I started my very own version of the X files.
I now have a large collection of maglite torches a Black suit and a list of incidents I never thought really happened except in the movies.
The first and Second, the starting points follow.
