The word “clog” is a Gaelic term meaning “time.” Clogging is “time” dancing in which the heel is the timekeeper. It is a great form of aerobic exercise. Some of the health advantages are it helps coordination and rhythm, develops flexibility, lowers blood pressure, increases endurance and strength, increases lung capacity, relieves stress, and helps weight loss (burns around 400 calories per hour.) With all these benefits, clogging is definitely one of the best ways to keep in shape and enjoy it at the same time. In the United States, clogging takes two major forms: traditional southern Appalachian or precision . There are many other types of clogging, but these seem to be the most prominent. Appalachian clogging can still be found in western North Carolina, West Virginia, southwestern Virginia, and other places in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Cloggers in this style dance mainly to live music. This music usually consists of bluegrass type music with banjos, fiddles, and guitars. Most of this type of clogging is freestyle, which means that the dancers have no choreographed footwork. On the other hand, precision (or modern) clogging was developed around World War II, and is danced to a variety of music. Specifically, the music can range from country western and bluegrass, to modern pop music, oldies, rock, rap, techno and hip-hop. Precision teams wear elaborate costumes and shoes with jingle taps. This type of clogging reaches for the goal of everyone clogging the same step at the same time.

The Stompers, both Mr. and Ms. styles, now have 2 models. A Basic, which has served many thousands of cloggers quite well, and an enhanced version for those dancers more concerned with the fine points of tone qualities. The "performance model' (both Mr. and Ms.) has a stronger insole board than the basic stomper. The spring steel arch (shank) support is riveted in place. This feature provides real support but also insures absolute security of the arch. Most others have an inserted shank (arch support) which is only glued in place. If the glue breaks loose then a popping occurs with each step. This factor can create severe tone distortion.

Clogging With Ree Payne I have Clogging for 20+ years. I started in Georgia, moved to Florida where I formed the first Clogging Club in the Ft Walton Beach area and finally ended up in Colorado. I have formed many clubs here in Colorado, including the Columbine Cloggers, The Wildwood Cloggers, the Mile-Hi Cloggers and the Columbine Kids. I am the founder of the Colorado Clogging Council. Ree Payne I was born in North Carolina. I have been married to my husband Ed for over 45 years. We have 3 daughters, 3 grandsons and 2 granddaughters. At the present time our oldest daughter and our 2 granddaughters dance with our club. The Wildwood Cloggers The Mile-Hi Clogging Club The Wildwood Cloggers are an exhibition clogging team. They perform at many festivals, private engagements and retirement homes. The Wildwood Cloggers do team routines(with contra and square dance movements) and line dances. This team practices on Sunday nights after the Mile-Hi Clogging Club dance. The Mile-Hi Clogging Club is a for fun club. They meet every Sunday from 6-8pm. This club dances all levels from easy to advanced. New steps and routines are taught almost weekly. There is no need for a partner in this club as most of the dances learned here are line dances. Lessons I teach beginning and intermediate lessons on Sunday Nights from 4:30-6:00pm. You do not need special shoes for the lessons. Just wear comfortable flat bottomed shoes.

WELCOME TO THE HOME PAGE OF KICK THE CAT EDINBURGH'S APPALACHIAN CLOGGING GROUP ‘Kick the Cat' is based in Edinburgh (Scotland), where we meet regularly to learn and perform Appalachian Clog dancing, a style of American step dancing which is a fusion and development of the Scottish and Irish step dances of the emigrants with Native American and African-American dance traditions. Two things must be pointed out straight away - we don't wear clogs (tap shoes or hard-soled shoes are preferred), and we like cats! ‘Kick the Cat’ is the name of a step and we thought it made a good name for the group. P ED A NTICS P ED A NTICS is a percussive dance ensemble, specializing in Appalachian Clogging and Flatfooting. We are based in Frederick and surrounding areas of Maryland. PedAntics was founded in 1984 by Tom Hinds, along with a couple of his students, one of whom was current member and chief choreographer Megaera Kuny. In 1984 they were called the Stump Jumpers, until they changed their name to PedAntics in 1994. We travelled to Denmark in 2000, where we were a part of the Square Dance Partners Festival in Kalding.
