Clogging is a pastime that carries the mind and feet back in time to the days of our forefathers. Fire-on-the-Mountain performs to bluegrass music. Both clogging and bluegrass are art forms that developed from traditional folk music and dance in the Appalachian mountains. There are many versions of the history of clog dancing in the United States. Clogging is generally thought to be a combination of the various native dances that settlers to the Appalachian region brought with them. As the different cultural groups mingled and combined so did their dances, until what we now know as clogging was formed. One of the contributing cultures was the Cherokee people, who lived in the Appalachian area when European settlers arrrived. Dancing was very much a part of their culture, and they would beat the drum and make music for various ceremonial dances such as the hunting dance or rain dance. European settlers brought their own dances, including the Lancaster Clog Dance from England (which at least gave the dance its name). The polka step, from Czech and German origins, is the basic rhythm for clogging. The most influential of the European cultures is that of the Irish, with the Hard Shoe dances that bear a striking resemblance to clogging. Touchwood Appalachian Dancers What is Appalachian Dance? Appalachian dance derived originally from English, Irish and Scottish step dancing, taken by the settlers to the Eastern American States. These were distilled into this new dance form, which was influenced and adapted by the local inhabitants. It has become extremely popular in recent years in the UK and is a style of dance as exciting to watch as to perform - as audience response has always shown! Touchwood are based in the East Midlands of England and have been dancing Appalachian Clogging at festivals and many other venues all over England for the past 18 years. The Steppin' Xpress Clogging Team was formed approximately three years ago in Clare, Iowa by Sudi Regan. Sudi had been a long-time clogger and began to teach the dance form to young girls on her porch. The craze caught on and some adults began to join in. Many, many hours of organization and practice, practice, practice ensued. The end result is Steppin' Xpress The Steppin' Xpress Clogging Team is constantly gearing up for their next performance. The club hosted the 1998 Fall Iowa Clogging Association Convention on October 23-25 in Clare. The club members attended and performed in the Iowa Clogging Association Convention in Altoona in late March. The group recently performed at AppleFest in Fort Dodge as well as the Iowa State Fair. The group also performed with the Fort Dodge Civic Glee Club in November. Welcome to the Wolfpack Clogging Team Homepage. As you might have guessed from that statement, we're a student organization at North Carolina State University The Wolfpack Clogging Team began in 1989 under the direction of Marsha Lester. The first team performance was in December of that year at a women's basketball game at NCSU. Soon, word got out about this group of dancers. Since that time, the team has performed at many schools, retirement homes, and faculty functions. The team has also participated in many competitions. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday and Thursday between and 7:30 PM . These rehearsals are held at Carmichael Gym in the dance studio (RM 2307) during the fall and spring semesters. Auditions are held in the spring and fall. Students interested in joining the team are encouraged to take the introductory clogging class (PE 233), regardless of skill level, so that they become used to the team's style of clogging.
