What is clogging? Clogging is a type of dance in which, in most cases, taps are affixed to the sole of the dancers shoe to emphasize the beat of the music. One might say it resembles tap dancing, but has far more variety and versatility! Originally done to old time string music, Cloggers today dance today to bluegrass, country, pop, jazz, and rap music - basically anything with a good lively beat! Besides being a lot of fun, clogging is an excellent form of aerobic excercise, a great way to meet new and exciting people from all over, and if your budget allows, it can provide opportunities to travel. How did I get started? I am glad that you asked, I actually started dancing in September of 1994, to have an activity to do with my mom. I had never danced before, and really expected to stick with it for only about 2 weeks! To my surprise, I have found clogging to be tremendous fun, and really pretty easy to pick up! I started dancing in my home town of Milan, MI, with a group called the Rumblin' Thunder Cloggers. Mom and I then began to clog with 2 other groups, The Katy-Did Cloggers in Hartland and The Tollgate Cloggers in Novi, MI, we eventually left the RTC. My mom (Beverly) and I also talked a couple of friends into starting a demo group, which we originally called Generations, because we are mom/daughter, grandmother/grand-daughter! After starting our own clogging class in Ypsilanti, MI, and aquiring new demo team members we changed our name to The Movin' On Cloggers!! Sadly though, I had to give up clogging due to a back condition. Mom continues to clog when she can and we still attend some events and parties.

As you might have guessed from that statement, we're a student organization at North Carolina State University The Wolfpack Clogging Team began in 1989 under the direction of Marsha Lester. The first team performance was in December of that year at a women's basketball game at NCSU. Soon, word got out about this group of dancers. Since that time, the team has performed at many schools, retirement homes, and faculty functions. The team has also participated in many competitions. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday and Thursday between and 7:30 PM . These rehearsals are held at Carmichael Gym in the dance studio (RM 2307) during the fall and spring semesters. Auditions are held in the spring and fall. Students interested in joining the team are encouraged to take the introductory clogging class (PE 233), regardless of skill level, so that they become used to the team's style of clogging. ABOUT CLOGGING... ...a fun and addictive folk dance! Clogging is a type of dance that claims many origins, but it continues to be a source of fun and a chance to socialize for our members and many cloggers throughout the world. Our team traditions originated in the Appalachian mountains from people just getting together and dancing for hours on end with each other and as competition with other individuals. The dance form combines solo clogging footwork and square dancing, each with totally separate origins. The clogging itself is characterized by the footwork - often done in leather-soled shoes and, in many places, with one of many types of metal or wood taps on the balls, heels, or both. In traditional dances, a lot of the old square dance figures are done, except usually in a circle and with a different style unlike the square dance form. Although the dance form known as "clogging" has many different definitions within the US, the origin of Southern Appalachian Traditional clogging is basically the culture mentioned in its namesake. Today, we have "precision" clogging with specific steps done in certain sequences. However, traditional "freestyle" clogging still exists in the form of individual as well as group dances. NCSU offers a beginning clogging class as an elective PE class (PE 233). It is very fun, and it is where some of the team members got started, too!

The Leader, or Cuer Music: It Takes All Kinds ... Clogging in the USA Also called "Hillbilly Tapdancing," clogging is an authentic and distinctive form of American folk dance. Clogging has roots that reach back to our Scots-Irish and European heritage; yet at the same time, the clogging that's performed and enjoyed across the United States today has such a contemporary feel that even teenage kids have been known to desert MTV and hustle down to the school auditorium for an evening's dancing. What Do Cloggers Look Like? If you've ever seen a group of enthusiastic cloggers kicking up their heels, you probably haven't forgotten it. You'll have noticed, among other things, that cloggers don't look like the little dolls that dance out of cuckoo clock windows in pigtails and aprons; unless they're performing in a show, they dress like any other casual dancer.
