Spooky Atomic Clocks
NASA-supported researchers hope to improve high-precision clocks by entangling their atoms.
Listen to this story via streaming audio , a downloadable file , or get help January 23, 2004: Einstein called it "spooky action at a distance." Now NASA-funded researchers are using an astonishing property of quantum mechanics called "entanglement" to improve atomic clockshumanity's most precise way to measure time. Entangled clocks could be as much as 1000 times more stable than their non-entangled counterparts. This improvement would benefit pilots, farmers, hikersin short, anyone who uses the Global Positioning System (GPS). Each of the 24+ GPS satellites carries four atomic clocks on board. By triangulating time signals broadcast from orbit, GPS receivers on the ground can pinpoint their own location on Earth Right: Quantum entanglement does some mind-bending things. In this laser experiment entangled photons are teleported from one place to another.

103. KYscrolling
Kentucky scroll saw artisan creating wood baskets, boxes, clocks, Christmas ornaments, and picture frames.
http://www.KYscrolling.homestead.com/
Howard's Scrolling came into existence in 1996. The owners are Don Randell and Vonda Howard. All items are handcrafted by Don. The business is located on Highway 355 in Owen County in Kentucky.
Most of the items are made with a scroll saw and are made of oak. Some items are made of walnut, cherry, osagae orange, mulberry, and maple. An oil finish is applied to most of the items, but sometimes lacquer is used.
Howard's Scrolling specializes in oak baskets and boxes made with a scroll saw. These baskets and boxes are very unusual. They look like they are woven, but the design is cut in the wood. Clocks, Christmas ornaments, letter openers, pictures, and banks are some of the other items that are made here. Any of these items would make a great addition to your home. If you are looking for a gift for someone, a basket or box would be a great idea.
All items are sold on a satisfaction-guaranteed basis. If you are unhappy with any item, return it within 30 days for a replacaement or refund. Remember that the joy of handcrafted items is their individuality, and the item you receive may vary slightly in size or color from the one shown.
Custom orders are accepted. Please feel free to contact us by mail (Howard's Scrolling 7655 Hwy. 355 Owenton, KY 40359), email

Celestial bodies, the sun, moon, planets, and stars have provided us a reference for measuring the passage of time throughout our existence. Ancient civilizations relied upon the apparent motion of these bodies through the sky to determine seasons, months, and years. Little is known about the details of timekeeping in prehistoric eras, however, records and artifacts that are discovered, show that in every culture, people were preoccupied with measuring and recording the passage of time. Ice-age hunters in Europe over 20,000 years ago scratched lines and gouged holes in sticks and bones, possibly counting the days between phases of the moon. Five thousand years ago, Sumerians in the Tigris-Euphrates valley in today's Iraq had a calendar that divided the year into 30-day months, divided the day into 12 periods (each corresponding to 2 of our hours), and divided these periods into 30 parts (each like 4 of our minutes). There are no written records of the creating of Stonehenge, built over 4000 years ago in England, but its alignments show its purposes apparently included the determination of seasonal or celestial events, such as lunar eclipses, solstices and so on.

    Linux Tips
    Linux, Clocks, and Time
    Introduction
This document explains how to set your computer's clock from Linux, how to set your timezone, and other stuff related to Linux and how it does its time-keeping. Your computer has two timepieces; a battery-backed one that is always running (the ``hardware'', ``BIOS'', or ``CMOS'' clock), and another that is maintained by the operating system currently running on your computer (the ``system'' clock). The hardware clock is generally only used to set the system clock when your operating system boots, and then from that point until you reboot or turn off your system, the system clock is the one used to keep track of time. On Linux systems, you have a choice of keeping the hardware clock in UTC/GMT time or local time. The preferred option is to keep it in UTC because then daylight savings can be automatically accounted for. The only disadvantage with keeping the hardware clock in UTC is that if you dual boot with an operating system (such as DOS) that expects the hardware clock to be set to local time, the time will always be wrong in that operating system.
    Setting your timezone
The timezone under Linux is set by a symbolic link from /etc/localtime to a file in the /usr/share/zoneinfo directory that corresponds with what timezone you are in. For example, since I'm in South Australia

    119. Clocks
The first real means of telling time with clocks appear to have been devised by the Egyptians. They used sundials or shadow clocks to measure the time of day.
    http://www.crystalinks.com/clocks.html

The earliest measurements of time date back over 10,000 years. One of the key drivers of inventing methods of keeping track of time were the farmers needs to determine the best time to plant. Archaeologists have discovered bones with inscriptions that are believed to have been used to track lunar cycles. The first real means of telling time with clocks appear to have been devised by the Egyptians. By 2100 BC, they had invented a means to divide the day into 24 hours. They used sundials or shadow clocks to measure the time of day. The Sundial indicates the time of day by the positioning of the shadow of some object on which the sun's rays fall. The shadow clock consists of a straight base with a raised crosspiece at one end. A scale with time divisions is inscribed on the base. The clock is set east-west and is reversed at midday. Sundials were another early method for marking time. One of the first ancient people to use sundials were the Sumerians. They divided the day into 12 parts and each part was about 2 hours long. They measured the length of shadows to determine how much time had passed. No one is really sure why the Sumerians kept track of time; maybe it was for religious purposes. Sundials were dependent on the weather; it would be useless on a cloudy day and the winter and summer shadows would not correspond with the markings. In order for the sundial to work correctly, it had to be positioned correctly. The Egyptians also divided the day into 12 parts as well. They used huge granite columns called Cleopatra Needles to keep track of time periods. They had 12 marks on the ground that equalled 12 parts of the day. When the sun touched the top, a shadow was created and the length and position of the shadow told the Egyptians how much daylight remained. They invented a portable piece called a sundial. It contains 3 parts: a circular dial, a needle and a style (gnomon) to keep the needle in place. Cleopatra's needles were inconvient and impractical for the average person.
