Turkey has seven distinct geographic and climatic regions (click on each for a description). Marmara
The countryside around Istanbul Edirne Bursa and the Sea of Marmara is low hills and rolling farmland excellent for fruit orchards (apricots, grapes, peaches) as well as vegetables, sunflowers and grain. South of Bursa are higher mountains (2500+ meters/8200 feet). Rainfall averages 668 mm/26 inches per year; temperatures range from a low of -16C/3F in the depths of winter to 40C/104F on the hottest day in summer. It's quite humid (average 73%). Back to Top Aegean
The Aegean region centered on Izmir is a true breadbasket , with low hills and higher mountains framing fertile valleys full of rich alluvial soil . The dependable summer sun produces bumper crops of tobacco, sunflowers, olives, figs, peaches, pears and apples. Rainfall averages 645 mm/25 inches per year; temperatures range from -8C/18F to 43C/109F, with average humidity of 69%.

Geography of Brazil
World Facts Index Brazil Map of Brazil Geographic Regions Brazil's twenty-six states and the Federal District (Distrito Federal) are divided conventionally into five regionsNorth (Norte), Northeast, Southeast (Sudeste), South, and Center-West (see fig. 4). In 1996 there were 5,581 municipalities (municípios ), which have municipal governments. Many municipalities, which are comparable to United States counties, are in turn divided into districts (distritos ), which do not have political or administrative autonomy. In 1995 there were 9,274 districts. All municipal and district seats, regardless of size, are considered officially to be urban. For purely statistical purposes, the municipalities were grouped in 1990 into 559 micro-regions, which in turn constituted 136 meso-regions. This grouping modified the previous micro-regional division established in 1968, a division that was used to present census data for 1970, 1975, 1980, and 1985. Each of the five major regions has a distinct ecosystem. Administrative boundaries do not necessarily coincide with ecological boundaries, however. In addition to differences in physical environment, patterns of economic activity and population settlement vary widely among the regions. The principal ecological characteristics of each of the five major regions, as well as their principal socioeconomic and demographic features, are summarized below. North The equatorial North, also known as the Amazon or Amazônia, includes, from west to east, the states of Rondônia, Acre, Amazonas, Roraima, Pará, Amapá, and, as of 1988, Tocantins (created from the northern part of Goiás State, which is situated in the Center-West). Rondônia, previously a federal territory, became a state in 1986. The former federal territories of Roraima and Amapá were raised to statehood in 1988.

Exam Format Midterm 1 is worth 20% of your final grade. Test is made up of multiple choice (about 30), true/false (about 10), short answer/definition (3 or 4) questions. There is NO long essay question for this exam . You should understand and be able to define and discuss the following concepts or theories in detail, providing examples whenever possible. This brief review should provide you with a good starting point for your exam preparation. The exclusion of a term or idea from this sheet does not mean that it cannot appear on the exam. However anything that appears in the exam will be based on class notes, outlines or text readings. Revising your class notes, outlines, and reading the book are good study habits – be sure to do all three! If you are unclear about anything come in to see me. Focus study efforts on Material covered in lecture and in text, see end of chapter reviews for terms. For broad concepts, for e.g. in the case of The Demographic Transition Model do the following: Look at cause and effects Changes between different stages General economic, population and other characteristics of regions

GEOGRAPHY: Natural Regions
Chile consists of three distinct longitudinal structural regions -the Andes, the coastal range and the central Valley- and a series of latitudinal ald altitudinal climatic regions.
The Andes
The Andes (Cordillera) run along the entire lenght of the eastern part of the country. The watershed between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, which follows the central and often highest ridges of the Andes, was adopted (by agreement with Argentina) as Chile's eastern boundary. In the north, approximately to latitude 27 grades, the Andes consists of two or more almost parallel ranges. The Chilean Andes are highest and most rugged and precipitous in the northern and central parts of the country, with peaks above 6,000 meters (20,000 feet). South America's highest peak, Aconcagua (22,834 feet), rises just east of Chile's border. Mountain passes in this part of the Andes are few and difficult, rising above 10,000 feet. South of Santiago the Andes become gradually lower, with peaks of aproximately 12,00 feet. Passes are much lower and easier to negotiate. In the extreme south, the Andes are fragmented by deep, latitudinal valleys (of glacial origin) deep ocean inlets and channels. The mountains extend trough the island of Tierra del Fuego to the southern end of the continent. Near the Chilean Andes and along their western flank is one of the world's densest concentrations of volcanoes, both extinct and active. There are over 2,000, including 48 that have erupted at least once within the last 100 years. The abundance of volcanic features in Chile and its vicinity is also reflected in the frequent sismic events and conspicous evidence of recent tectonic movements.

Koppen Climate Map
Harm de Blij Various attempts have been made to classify the climates of the earth into climatic regions. One notable, yet ancient and misguided example is that of Aristotle's Temperate, Torrid, and Frigid Zones (map) Each category is further divided into sub-categories based on temperature and precipitation. For instance, the U.S. states located along the Gulf of Mexico are designated as "Cfa." The "C" represents the "mild mid-latitude" category, the second letter "f" stands for the German word feucht Subscribe to the Geography Newsletter Name

List and demonstrate how cartographic presentations enhance our understanding of earth and its systems. What problems and choices face the map makers? Could we live very well without maps? 2. List and demonstrate the most significant interactions which take place in our atmosphere. Be sure to focus on the energy budgets of significant regions of earth, the contributions of humans and the measurements most often used for studying the atmosphere. Why do we have seasons? Assess the possibilities, positive and negative, which we create in response to seasonal change. How have humans adapted to these variations? On a continuum, list the most appropriate and inappropriate adaptations, then map the best examples of appropriate and inappropriate adaptations. How does the presence and/or proximity of water influence temperature? Select at least five distinctive locations at two different times and demonstrate the geographical significance of the interactions between energy and water. Why is there wind?

Geography of Spain
World Facts Index Spain Map of Spain Spanish territory comprises nearly five-sixths of the Iberian Peninsula, which the nation shares with Portugal, the micro-state of Andorra, and the British possession of Gibraltar. Spanish territory also includes two sets of islandsthe Balearic Islands (Spanish, Islas Baleares) in the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands (Spanish, Canarias) in the Atlantic Oceanand two city enclaves in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla. Peninsular Spain, covering an area of 492,503 square kilometers, consists of a central plateau known as the Meseta Central, which is enclosed by high mountains on its north, south, east, and part of its western sides. The area that is predominantly plateau also encompasses several mountain systems that are lower than the peripheral mountains. Although Spain thus has physical characteristics that make it, to some extent, a natural geographic unit, there are also internal geographic features that tend to compartmentalize the country. The topographical characteristics also generate a variety of climatic regimes throughout the country. By far the greatest part of the country, however, experiences a continental climate of hot, dry summers and rather harsh, cold winters. Where these conditions prevail, the soils have eroded, vegetation is sparse, and agriculture is difficult. Irrigation is practiced where possible, but it is difficult because the flow in most streams is seasonally irregular, and the stream beds of larger rivers are frequently much lower than the adjacent terrain.

Overview Thailand covers an area of 514,000 square kilometres in the centre of the South-East Asian peninsula. It is bordered by Myanmar (Burma), Lao People's Democratic Republic, Cambodia and Malaysia, and has 2,420 kilometres of coast line on the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman sea. Thailand stretches 1,650 kilometres from north to south, and from east to west 780 kilometres at its widest point.
For economic, social and ecological reasons, Thailand is usually classified into four geographical regions. They are: the central region (including Bangkok Metropolitan Region) comprising the basin of the Chao Phrya River which runs from north to south and after crossing Bangkok flows to the Gulf of Thailand. The central region is often called the "rice bowl" of Thailand being the most fertile area of the country. After the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, it enjoys the highest per capita income in the country.
The northern region is mountainous and was traditionally the most heavily forested area of the country. In the recent years, however, overcutting has considerably reduced its forest resources. The main centres of population are in the narrow alluvial valleys along the four north-south flowing rivers which unite in the northern central plain to form the Chao Phraya.

Lesson 2 - Climate of West Africa? SCoPE Site Lesson Plan Title: Abstract The purpose of this lesson is for students to identify and locate the different climatic conditions in West Africa. After students identify the countries of West Africa on an outline map, they use an atlas or their textbook maps to locate climate regions and to make a key that lists the major climates for West Africa. Students then shade their outline maps to show the distribution of the major climates. They discuss the patterns of climate as they are related to the five themes of geography.
