Climate Change The American pika may be one of the first North American mammals to fall victim to global warming if heat-trapping emissions are not reduced soon.
photo: WWF / J. MacKenzie/www.picaworks.com The problem of climate change transcends national and community boundaries, and affects the whole environment. Using its global reach, WWF examines the effects of climate change and advocates solutions that will help protect beloved wildlife and wild places for future generations. If we fail to act now, many of the world's most important habitats and species will cease to exist. Although human-caused global warming is among the most pervasive threats to the web of life, its root cause can be addressed. The burning of fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas - releases carbon dioxide (CO ) into the atmosphere. This carbon pollution blankets the earth, trapping in heat, and causing global warming. Reducing these emissions is the first step in stopping global warming. Photovoltaic arrays and windmills help gather energy without heat-trapping emissions.

The Chihuahuan Desert Region
An Overview
Map Flora Fauna Elevation/Climate A desert region can be defined many ways. To a physical scientist such as a meteorologist, a desert can be defined as an area receiving an average annual rainfall of 10" or less. On the other hand, a biologist will consider how moisture moves through an ecosystem and the effect it will have on life forms. His definition of a desert region is an area in which the evaporation rate exceeds the annual rainfall. At the Fort Davis Headquarters of the CDRI, the annual evaporation rate is 36-48" while the annual rainfall averages 17". In addition, the evaporation rate on an open body of water such as a pond, river, or stock tank can be as high as 72" annually. Pretty dry! As a result, a desert region is usually defined by a combination of factors such as climate, topography, and plant and animal communities. T he Chihuahuan Desert region stretches from the Rio Grande Valley in southern New Mexico and the San Simon Valley of southeastern Arizona to an area just north of Mexico City . It is approximately 8 00 miles long and 250 miles wide . Included in the Chihuahuan Desert region are parts of the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas and the cities of El Paso and Las Cruces in the United States, as well as parts of the states of Chihuahua

NASA study finds 'human-caused land cover changes' key
By Richard Stenger (CNN)
Story Tools
(CNN) Cutting trees, building cities and growing crops have profound effects on the climate in addition to human activities that release greenhouse gases, a new NASA study reports. Land surface disturbances influence everything from temperature, precipitation, atmospheric circulation and how much solar heat bounces off the planet. Concentrated development, in particular in North America, Europe and Southeast Asia, disperses enough heat into the atmosphere to rival the effect of all greenhouse gas emissions combined, according to atmospheric scientists. "Our work suggests that the impacts of human-caused land cover changes on climate are at least as important, and quite possibly more important, than those of carbon dioxide," said Roger Pielke Sr. of Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Carbon dioxide is the primary culprit among numerous heat-trapping gases caused by human activity thought to contribute to global warming.

U.N. bids to rescue climate deal
A Greenpeace protester wears a mask of Bush and holds a torn paper, symbolising the Kyoto treaty BERLIN, Germany A U.N. conference on global warming begins on Monday to try to rescue the Kyoto greenhouse emissions pact after the U.S. abandoned it as harmful to its economy. Delegates from some 180 countries are expected to gather in Bonn, Germany, for a new round of bargaining over the treaty. The Kyoto pact is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. It was negotiated in 1997 by the U.S. and major industrialised nations, but U.S. President George W. Bush has since rejected it. Scientists believe the gases mostly a result of burning fossil fuels trap heat into the earth's atmosphere, contributing to global warming, which could cause disastrous weather changes and floods over the next 100 years. While the EU has decided to ratify the Kyoto treaty next year even without the United States, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi is still holding out for the U.S. to participate.

Canadian Institute for Climate Studies
The Canadian Institute for Climate Studies (CICS) is a not-for-profit Canadian corporation initiated by the Meteorological Service of Canada and the Province of British Columbia in order to further the understanding of the climate system, its variability and potential for change and the application of that understanding to decision making in both the public and private sectors.
CICS has four main areas of expertise
  • Climate Scenarios : provision of data, maps, and background materials on Climate Scenarios as well as tools for downscaling to the level of detail needed by many researchers for studies of the impact of climate change on ecosystems and human economic and social systems. Such studies can be vital for planning and decision making in nearly every area of human activity that depends on weather and climate. CICS hopes to expand its work in this area to provide a full service to assist researchers in constructing scnearios tailored to their particular needs.
  • Climate Applications : CICS aims to become recognised as THE one-stop-shopping centre for climate change impact researchers from anywhere in Canada. Based on its links to the state-of the-art climate modelling work at UVic and its own expertise in scenarios construction, CICS can offer valuable consulting services to individual climate sensitive industries and organisations who need assistance with incorporating climate change considerations into their forward planning.

    Deal reached on climate talks
MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) Negotiators reached an agreement early Saturday on rules governing a treaty on climate change, the first international accord to curb global warming, a spokesman for the European delegation said. The agreement, accepted in a closed-door meeting of chief delegates, still needed approval by the full plenary of the climate conference and was expected as a matter of course. The announcement by European spokesman Vincent Georis, of Belgium, came after 18 hours of talks that stretched well into Saturday although a Friday deadline had been set. "The global package is adopted," Georis told reporters. EXTRA INFORMATION Morocco's Marrakesh is the site of the two-week conference on Earth's climate.
