Clay crafts from FamilyFun by Valerie Kohn
of 6 Like safety scissors and nonspill paint jars, recipes for homemade clays have won over many a parent with a penchant for crafts. In addition to being less expensive than their store-bought counterparts, home varieties are often easier to manipulate, especially for children who are just learning to think in three dimensions. The ingredients, all common kitchen staples, take only minutes to mix, which means a near-instant project for your children and one less trip to the art store for you. There are dozens of such recipes (every art teacher has a favorite), but these four have the approval of many satisfied sculptors. PLAY CLAY
This popular recipe produces a clay that can be used over and over again and will remain pliant for weeks. A child just learning to model will appreciate how soft and cooperative this dough feels in her hands, especially when it's still warm. Materials
1 cup flour
1 cup water
1/2 cup salt
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
Food coloring (optional) Mix all ingredients together in a saucepan and cook over medium heat until the mixture holds together (keep mixing or it will stick to the bottom of the pan). When the clay is cool enough to touch, your child can knead it on a floured board.

Home-made "Clay" Ornaments Clay Supplies:
2 cups (500 ml or .5 liter) flour
2 cups (500 ml or .5 liter) salt
About 1 cup (250 ml) water
"Cookie" Supplies:
Christmas cookie cutters
Permanent markers or acrylic paints
Glitter and Sequins
White glue Ribbon or yarn Mix flour, salt, and water to make a stiff mixture. Knead for about ten minutes to dissolve salt. Clay is ready to shape. Roll clay on a floured surface until 1/4" thick. Cut with cookie cutters to make Christmas shapes. Make hole (try a straw) at top of the shapes for stringing a ribbon through. Place shapes on cookie sheet, then bake in oven at 225 degrees F (107 degrees C) for 2-3 hours. Turn them over occasionally to keep them from curling. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely. Decorate each ornament with markers or paint. After they are dry, apply glitter and sequins as desired. Thread ribbon or yarn through hole at top. Hang on your tree! Supplies: 1 Cup ARGO® or KINGSFORD'S® Corn Starch 1¼ Cups cold water (add food coloring to color clay) STIR together Baking Soda and Corn Starch in saucepan. Add water and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture reaches consistency of moist mashed potatoes (approx 10-15 minutes). If clay is cooked too long, finished crafts may crack. REMOVE mixture to plate and cover with a damp cloth. When Play Clay is cool enough to handle, pat until smooth. Now you're ready to make fun shapes! Note: In cooking, cutting and baking Play Clay, adults should assist young children.

MEXICAN CURIOS - ARTS AND CRAFTS FROM MEXICO
Mexico is a land of contrasts; From harsh deserts to lush tropical jungles, and from mountain forests to sandy beaches, Mexico has a little of everything. This rich variety is reflected in Mexican art and culture. We at MexicanCurios.com wish to introduce Mexican art to the world, and with it a little taste of this rich culture.
A Note to the Shopper: All of the works sold at MexicanCurios.com are handcrafted by individual artisans. As such, each piece is subject to the availability of materials, the naturally occurring differences in anything hand made, or the whims of the artist and may not appear exactly as pictured in this catalog. Although we try to use photos that accurately represent what you may expect to receive with your order, every piece can not (and in our opinion, should not) be a clone of that photo.
