In Elliot Masie's February 2002 report, "Virtual Classroom Technology Scan " there is note worthy trend that should focus our attention on application sharing in the virtual classroom. The study reports that the top three types of content or training delivered using a virtual classroom are: business technical processes and procedure (69%); business process training (67%); and information technology skills (67%). These statistics suggest that technical training using the virtual classroom accounts for a significant proportion of training in the live virtual classroom than professional development or sales training.
This finding is not surprising given the power of the live virtual classroom (LVC) for teach technical skills and knowledge. One of the best-kept secrets is the power of the LVC to share software applications. This feature is called application sharing or screen sharing

Considerations of Race, Ethnicity, and Gender

However, the contents of this chapter may not be copied, printed, or distributed in hard copy form without permission.] Since the 1960s and the rise of the civil rights movement, American colleges and universities have been engaged in an ongoing debate about how best to enroll, educate, and graduate students from groups historically underrepresented in higher education: women, African Americans, Chicanos and Latinos, Native Americans, American-born students of Asian ancestry, and immigrants. As enrollment statistics show, changes in both the demographics of the applicant pool and college admissions policies are bringing about a measure of greater diversity in entering classes (Levine and Associates, 1990). There are no universal solutions or specific rules for responding to ethnic, gender, and cultural diversity in the classroom, and research on best practices is limited (Solomon, 1991). Indeed, the topic is complicated, confusing, and dynamic, and for some faculty it is fraught with uneasiness, difficulty, and discomfort. Perhaps the overriding principle is to be thoughtful and sensitive and do what you think is best. The material in this section is intended to help you increase your awareness of matters that some faculty and students have indicated are particularly sensitive for women and students of color. Some of these problems affect all students, but they may be exacerbated by ethnic and gender differences between faculty members and their students.

However, the contents of this chapter may not be copied, printed, or distributed in hard copy form without permission.] A sizable portion of the work involved in teaching a large lecture course takes place well before the first day of classes. For example, in a seminar you can make a spur-of-the-moment assignment, but in large classes you may need to distribute written guidelines. Similarly, in small classes students can easily turn in their homework during class. In large lectures you must decide how to distribute and collect papers without consuming precious class time. All these tasks take planning and organization. Many of the following suggestions for teaching large classes will also work for small classes: good teaching practices apply to classes of any type. How can we prevent students from copying and pasting large sections of their writing assignments? A: There are several steps educators can take to address digital plagiarism:
  • Educate teachers on your campus on how easy it is for students to copy and paste sentences, paragraphs, or entire reports into their own documents. This should get their attention and impress them with what an important issue plagiarism is.

The 1996-97 academic year was an exciting time for fourth grade students at Wheelock Elementary School in Lubbock, Texas. For the first time, student work was not only published within the school building and shared with parents, students, and teachers, but some essays were published on the schools' internet website. Documents published in the fall included a short expository paper about carnivorous plants written by a fourth grader. Later in the semester, the school received an email message from an individual in the Philippines who was trying to grow Venus Flytrap plants, and needed some advice about their proper care. What tremendous excitement that email message generated for the young man who had written the essay! The respondent's email message clearly dramatized the motivational potential of the world-wide web as a global publishing platform for even elementary age students. It also, however, highlighted a significant academic challenge relating to internet content: determining the authenticity and credibility of a document and its author. While the fourth grade student who wrote the paper about carnivorous plants was certainly enthusiastic about his topic and committed to writing an accurate essay, he was also not the leading horticultural specialist in Lubbock for exotic plants. Starting at the third grade level, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Technology require students to "apply critical analysis to resolve information conflicts and validate information" (

Seen as the industry standard for delivering interactive multimedia presentations, Microsoft PowerPoint, almost a decade old now, is beginning to pop-up in classrooms of all levels across the nation. PowerPoint is a wonderful tool for learning in both a student and teacher-directed situation. It can add a new dimension to learning allowing teachers to explain abstract concepts, while accommodating all learning styles. Used properly, PowerPoint can be one of the most powerful tools for disseminating information ever known. Employed inappropriately, PowerPoint could potentially confuse students and make learning a difficult process. Set the scene : Early 90's, Corporate America. A top-level executive begins to assess his/her underlings not only on their ideas, but also on their arrangement of graphs and funny sounds that are integrated into their PowerPoint presentations. It is difficult to avoid teaching technology itself even when we all know that the ultimate goal is to improve teaching and learning through technology-enhanced lesson plans. But here are ways to focus technology tools as teaching tools.
    • Teach technology at the teachers' level, not as a business tool: Eg. how a word processor works for writing, most common functions for teachers, etc. Show examples of how the tool can be used in a classroom using sample integrated lessons. Brainstorm how the technology can be used in their curriculum. For long sessions, get more detailed and use a more standards-based approach to creating these integrated projects/units
From the discussions and examples, teachers leave each staff development session with actual projects they can use in their classroom immediately assuming they have access to the technology. Submitted by: Ernesto "Ernie" R. Delgado

Fourth Graders Show What They Know About Kentucky Regions Two fourth grade classes at Cassidy Elementary and the Academy at Lexington have recently been studying about the regions of Kentucky. As a culmination to their unit of study, these classes created websites to publish some of the information they had learned about Kentucky. Mrs. Cook’s 4 th grade class at Cassidy worked in small groups to research information about a particular region they were assigned. Each group had to find out about the geography, history, economy, natural resources and life in the 21 st century in that region using books and online resources. Using FrontPage, the groups then worked together to add their information to the class’s web page on the Regions of Kentucky. The goal of the site was to create a resource for future 4 th grade students when they begin their studies of Kentucky. See what a great job they have done by visiting their

There are a number of environments in which children must spend a large share of their time. Some of these are antagonistic, hostile or incompatible to self-expression. In this regard, the American school leaves little room for a sense of ownership or involvement. Students have very little to say, and are rarely asked for their opinions, about their school's physical characteristics . In its present state, the architecture and physical setting of most American schools is deplorable. It almost always follows the passive "egg crate" closed classroom format of 200 years ago, and all too often it is more like a prison than a place of discovery, wonder and creativity. It doesn't have to be this way. Since 1972 two of us (Taylor and Vlastos) have been studying the effects of learning environments on the behavior and learning of children. We are convinced that school environments have a largely untapped potential as active contributors to the learning process. It is also our contention that every teacher, administrator and child is a potential designer. Great amounts of money are not needed. Careful thought, time, enthusiasm and efficiency of planning can make a school ready to create the kind of learning environment so crucial to student growth.
