We've all known for a long time about soap and shampoo bottles that can be put to use in the classroom holding glue, water, whatever . Having just started wearing contact lenses, we've discovered another: the cleaning solution bottle. Smaller in size than soap bottles, with a flip top cap that won't get lost, these are great for glue, but you may want to use a small drill bit or a red-hot nail to make the hole larger. Anyone who wears contact lenses goes through this solution regularly, so have them save the bottles for you. Popcorn Day
Reward your students with popcorn when they finally make it through their multiplication tables, to illustrate how steam and pressure can have explosive results, as an incentive to go one day without getting in trouble in the lunchroom or simply because it's Friday. Make Time to Teach: Ten Tools for Reducing Paperwork
What happens when paperwork starts to crowd out time with students? Is there a way to streamline the forms that can take over a teacher's life? Educator Brenda Dyck has found ten online tools that help her reduce paperwork and give her more time to teach. Included: Practical Web sites designed save teachers time. They say a teacher will never forget his or her first class. That must be true, because 28 years later, I still can picture those students' faces. I can still recite many of their names and recall many moments of learning that we shared. It is also amazing to me that, after all these years, the call in my heart to teach is as fresh as it was when I met that first class in 1974. I am as excited now as I was then when my instruction and my students' understanding collide!

A s a service to art teachers and parents, we offer this information on maintaining a safe and hazard-free learning environment for kids while engaged in art activities. This material was originally written by Allison Jerard, a former art education student at the University of Florida. Return to resources Art teachers have a responsibility to provide their students with a safe learning environment. Ensuring a safe and hazard-free classroom should begin with a thorough inventory and understanding of the existing conditions. The following outline of questions indicates the type of information that should be gathered. General Classroom Conditions
  • Housekeeping. Is there dirt, debris and dust around the room? Is there adequate storage and access? Are there informational and warning signs in key places?
  • Tools and equipment. What is there place and condition? Is there a maintenance schedule for all tools and equipment?
  • Lighting. Is there natural and/or artificial light? Is it adequate?
  • Ventilation. What are the provisions for general and local fresh air sources?
Current Practices
  • Instructional methods. How and to what extent are health and safety issues included in lesson presentations and general classroom instruction?

Yet, a recent Department of Education study found that only one in five teachers in the United States feels prepared to teach using technology in the classroom. All the technology in the world won’t make a difference in student achievement without well-trained teachers who know how to use it effectively. That’s why Microsoft, in partnership with the Intel Corp. and other leading technology companies, joined together recently to create a worldwide industry initiative the Intel Teach to the Future program — to train more than 400,000 teachers over the next three years how to use technology to improve teaching and learning. Microsoft’s contribution of software, with an estimated retail value of $344 million, is the single largest software donation in the company’s history and builds on Microsoft’s longtime commitment to teacher training. Intel is contributing $100 million in funding, equipment, curriculum development and program management.

Developed by a teacher in response to her second grade students frustration with their drawing efforts and repetitive handwriting drills. The book helps teach children to see complex objects as combinations of simple shapes. Fine motor skills improve and images become more easily analyzed. Language skills are addressed as pictures and stories are discussed. As technical skills improve so does self-confidence and creativity. This book has a farm and animal theme. There are 23 items to draw, most of which are broken down into six steps. The new lines to be drawn in each step are in red, making it very clear what is to be added.
