    88. SoYouWanna Learn About Classical Music?
Even if all three of those statements apply to you, take heart Learning about classical music is not as boring or difficult as you might imagine it to be.

An Intermix Network Property SYW learn about opera?
    SYW learn about jazz?

SYW fake an appreciation for art?

You definitely need the wisdom of this article if any of these statements apply to you:
    • You failed music appreciation in junior high school.
You don't know the difference between a flute and a piccolo (you heathen!).
You think that "classical" music is anything composed before 1972 ("Stairway to Heaven" - now that's classic).
Even if all three of those statements apply to you, take heart: Learning about classical music is not as boring or difficult as you might imagine it to be. In fact, without realizing it, you're probably already familiar with many classical songs because they're everywhere - at the dentist office, in car commercials on TV, accompanying your favorite Bugs Bunny cartoon. Your cell phone may even play Beethoven's Fur Elise when it rings.

History, similarities and differences with other Central Asian styles, relationship with Sufi poetry, the dastgah system, composition structure, instruments, and links.
    http://www.duke.edu/~azomorod/persian2.html
This page is the index to my hyper-media report on the traditional classical music of Persia (Iran). Of the many ancient societies that have shaped the history of human civilization, Persia has been one of the few which has persistently maintained its identity, and individuality through the ages; this is reflected in its classical music. The purpose of this site is to allow the casual observer an opportunity to explore the musical tradition of this ancient civilization. You will need a WAV player to hear the sound clips in this report. Click here if you need to download a player. Below is an outline of the ideas presented in this report. To view any topic in greater detail, simply click on it.
    Characteristics:
The following characteristics are shared between Iranian and other Central Asian music:
    • The music is mainly monophonic, with each instrument in an ensemble following one melodic scheme.
    • The music is based upon a modal system; with each mode engenderring different melodic types, called

    Visions of Light
Chin's compositions have been performed at numerous festivals and concert series in Europe, the Far East and the USA. Her most widely performed work is Akrostichon- Wortspiel for solo soprano and ensemble, programmed in 15 countries to date by such leading ensembles as Ensemble Modern conducted by George Benjamin, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group conducted by Simon Rattle, the Nieuw Ensemble of Amsterdam, Asko Ensemble, Ictus Ensemble, and the new music groups of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Philharmonia Orchestra. "My music is a reflection of my dreams," Chin writes. "I try to render into music the visions of immense light and of an incredible magnificence of colours that I see in all my dreams, a play of light and colours floating through the room and at the same time forming a fluid sound sculpture. Its beauty is very abstract and remote, but it is for these very qualities that it addresses the emotions and can communicate joy and warmth." Current through spring semester, 2001
Updated December 2, 2001 Since December 11, 1995, this page has been visited times... We've all seen sports bloopers and TV bloopers well, how about music bloopers? Since I began teaching Music Appreciation at Clemson University, I have collected all of the unintentionally funny things that students have written in their formal papers. Everything you will read, including bad spelling and grammar, has been lifted directly off of these reports. (Do note, though, that I do not require my students to write in all of these formats each semester; I rotate among them.) for those students of mine who are currently enrolled in my class, you need not worry that your work is represented here; I've included bloopers from previous semesters only. Oh, and all of the names have been omitted to protect the innocent and not-so-innocent! The bloopers come in seven flavors:
    • Concert Reports : Students are required to write a two-page report on a concert or recital they attended. (updated May 8, 2001)
    • Rehearsal Papers : I think attending a rehearsal can be as enlightening an experience for non-musicians as attending a concert, revealing to them the process of preparing for a performance. They explain their observations in this two-page paper. (updated May 8, 2001)
