About The Medieval Review
Since 1993, The Medieval Review (TMR; formerly the Bryn Mawr Medieval Review) has been publishing reviews of current work in all areas of Medieval Studies, a field it interprets as broadly as possible. The electronic medium allows for very rapid publication of reviews, and provides a computer searchable archive of past reviews, both of which are of great utility to scholars and students around the world. TMR operates as a moderated distribution list. Subscribers receive reviews as e-mail; TMR posts each review as soon as the editors have received and edited it. There is no paper TMR. Once posted, reviews are archived and available for viewing, searching, printing, etc. on this website ( http://www.hti.umich.edu/t/tmr/ A board of distinguished review editors assists the editors in finding reviewers for books. The editors welcome expressions of interest from potential reviewers and, of course, from authors and publishers wishing to submit review copies. Please address any questions about TMR to the editors at TMR-L@wmich.edu, or at the snail-mail address below. Permission to reproduce TMR reviews may be broadly presumed, but the editors reserve the right to forbid specific uses deemed injurious to the best interests of the project or its home institutions. Permission to retransmit or republish will be granted to noncommercial media on condition that TMR is supplied with copies of the retransmission.

A most unusual whisky advert Ralph Katzenell Recently I came across an unusual advert for whisky. The advert was produced in Morocco in the 1950s and was intended to influence the Jewish population there to purchase Lauder's Scotch Whisky. Lauder's was originally founded in 1886 by Archibald Lauder and successfully marketed a number of blends. Lauder also had a number of pubs, one of them is said to have had a working still in the window. Another of his pubs, a popular watering hole in Sauchihall Street Glasgow , still trades under the name Lauder's. The current owners and journalists alike seem confused by the name, and assume that the pub is named after Sir Harry Lauder, of 'knobbly stick and knobbly knees' music hall fame - a false impression encouraged by the presence of the Pavillion Theatre (the old music hall, still putting on shows) not 100 yards away on Renfield Street.
Among the most successful of the company blends, particularly in the export market, was "Lauder's". The brand passed into the ownership of Allied and then Macduff International in 1992.

Listed below are resources that may be helpful in your research. If you need additional help, please see the Reference Librarian or your Instructor. General Encyclopedias General encyclopedias are a good resource to begin your research. Often you will find a good overview article on your topic, with an outline and sometimes a bibliography. The online version of Encyclopedia Britannica is available any where on campus at http://search.eb.com Biographical Encyclopedias (Reference; First Floor) Biographical encyclopedias often have articles on famous authors. Two very good examples are: Current Biography (REF CT100 C81)
The McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of World Biography (REF CT103 M27) PN, PR, PS, Z Reference Sections (Reference; First Floor) These areas contain biographies and general criticisms of authors’ works. See pages 3-5 of this handout for specific titles. DiscLit With DiscLit, you can search all the Twayne’s United States Author’s books. The full-text of more than 100 books in this series is on CD-ROM, which means you can read and print sections of the books.

Classical Studies Collection Collection Overview
The classical studies collection is developed to support the teaching of the Greek and Latin languages and the study of Greek and Latin literatures in the Classical Studies Department . Emphasis is placed on the classical periods for both languages and on the modern period for Greek. Literature is collected in translation to support comparative literary studies and introductory courses. Modern Greek literature and materials on modern Greek history and culture have been acquired by direct purchase in Greece, thanks to periodic visits by a member of the Department. The bulk of English language and bilingual acquisitions are acquired through Yankee Book Peddler. Given the small size of the budget, great reliance is placed on other, larger subject funds for materials relevant to Classical Studies, e.g., Philosophy and History. Rapid advances in computer and networking technology have resulted in the acquisition of significant electronic resources, including electronic versions of familiar classical studies indexes and digitized full-text editions of primary sources. Classical Studies has been a pioneer in the field of digitized texts and BC has the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae, one of the earliest collections of electronic texts produced by modern scholarship. It also has Perseus, a CD-ROM multimedia product which together with the

FRANCISCAN AUTHORS, 13TH - 18TH CENTURY: A CATALOGUE IN PROGRESS This site is a co-production of Maarten van der Heijden and Bert Roest Bert Roest Maarten van der Heijden The following alphabetical list of Franciscan authors, with avowedly erratic biographical remarks and information on manuscripts, editions and studies, is far from complete, yet continually growing. Every three months we hope to install an updated version, gradually expanding the biographies as well as the information on manuscripts, editions and studies. For this, we make use of a wide range of different research instruments . . In the course of building this site, we also will start creating select bibliographies on specific topics, for instance on medieval and Franciscan preaching etc. . Eventually, a large part of the source information in this catalogue (in an ameliorated form) hopefully will find its way into C.A.L.M.A., the ultimate guide for medieval Latin sources at present being made by collaborators of the Fondazione Ezio Franceschini in Florence. For those interested in Franciscan studies the following provisional list might be a source of delight and not just of frustration. We hope to improve, maybe also with the help of your comments

You should also search Acorn to see what books are available in this library. Then search for articles and books in the Classics databases . These sources index recent scholarship, and will provide references to items published on a subject, whether or not they are owned by the Vanderbilt libraries. To determine whether the library has an article, in print or online, look up the journal title ( not the article title) in Acorn. I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, and Ready Reference Sources
Encyclopedia articles, written by subject authorities, provide information useful for gaining a basic understanding of a topic and getting started with a research project. Typically, a bibliography, or list, of "classic" books and articles for further research follows each article. Advanced students will find them useful for filling gaps and covering topics related to their central area of investigation.
