Traditio Classicorum
The Fortuna of the Classical Authors to the Year 1650
Charles H. Lohr
Deutsche Fassung The following pages contain a bibliography of secondary literature concerning the fortuna of classical authors to the year 1650. The bibliography is arrarranged alphabetically according to the common form, in Latin, of the names of the authors. The Latin form is followed also for Greek and Arabic authors. The term "classical" has in a few cases understood in a broad sense, so that some references are included to medieval and Renaissance "classics", but the choice has been rather arbitrary. For the bibliography concrning the fortuna of biblical works, the following lists contain for the most par references only to books, periodical articles being omitted. The entries for the individual authors have been divided into general works (situated immediately after the name of the author concerned) and specific titles (arranged chronologically). Part 1: A-L Part 2: M-Z Abbreviations

2.21. Rome: The revival of The Eternal City Charles Nauert on Lorenzo Valla and critical method Natural History of the elder Pliny were known throughout the Middle Ages but were thought to be the work of a single author. The rather simple feat of distinguishing uncle from nephew (for the nephew in one letter even describes the dramatic death of his uncle during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius) was not achieved until one of the early humanists pointed out the obvious. Humanists from Petrarch onward became aware that many classical texts contained omissions, interpolations, and textual errors as a result of simple scribal mistakes that had accumulated through centuries of recopying. Thus humanists sought not only to find lost works but also to detect and remedy textual errors, either through comparison of multiple manuscripts or through conjecture based on their sense of the author's style or the general context. Yet even at its best, the early humanistic work of criticizing and emending ancient texts was haphazard. Valla's principle of linguistic change was the underlying basis of modern linguistics. It found its most popular expression in his

Overview The Honours Program The Honours Program (Applied Studies Co-op) The Honours Program (Arts and Business) ... For Further Information on Medieval Studies Overview The study of the Middle Ages has become more and more recognized as vital to a complete understanding of modern civilization. The search for the roots of our culture inevitably leads to the Medieval world which both preserved and enlarged upon the classical heritage. The University of Waterloo and St. Jerome's University offer a program in Medieval Studies which provides students with an opportunity to explore the many aspects of this formative period. Making use of various resources within the university community, this program takes an interdisciplinary approach which allows students to follow a course of studies most appropriate to their own interests. Within the following guidelines, each student will create an individual program (Honours, Honours, Applied Studies Co-op, Arts and Business, or General) with the assistance of an academic advisor. The Honours Program The Honours Program requires 16 term courses from an approved list of courses, with at least 2 term courses taken from at least 5 of the 8 subject areas which comprise the program; also required is a total of at least 10 term courses (not all of which need be Medieval in content) in 1 of the subject areas. The total number of courses needed to fulfill the degree requirements may vary from a minimum of 18 to a maximum of 24 courses. In addition to the usual Faculty of Arts requirements, the Honours Program requires a minimum of 40 term courses overall, with an average of at least 75% in the Medieval core, and at least 60% overall.

    SCOPE
This overview describes research collections in classics (in its broadest definition), Byzantine studies, and mediaevalia. These areas of study can be thought of as those dealing with the peoples and cultures influenced by two groups of Indo-European speakers, namely, the Greeks and the Romans. In addition, this overview also extends to all relevant portions of the ancillary disciplines needed for research in these areas. These disciplines include archaeology, art, literature, philosophy, numismatics, history, anthropology, and linguistics.
    GENERAL RESEARCH STRENGTHS
The Library of Congress is a major center for the studies as outlined above. Classics have been with this institution since its very inceptionboth the first and the replacement Jefferson libraries were heavy with classical works and one can even see Mr. Jefferson's handwritten corrections in the margins of his Greek and Latin works. This continued throughout the nineteenth century, which also witnessed the growth in the discipline and in its scientific developmentfrom textual criticism to archaeological methodology. The collection at the Library of Congress, by its sheer quantity, must be viewed as one of major proportions for these studies in the United States. The hallmark of the collection, of course, is the general collection. From texts of the authors, to translations, commentaries, historical discussions, excavation reports, reference works to collections of inscriptions, vases, sculptures, etc., it is a vast and still growing collection, although with noticeable gaps.ibrary of the Annotated Card program, bibliographic access to children's books has been further strengthened.
