"Last Funeral of the Civil War" to Put Hunley Crew to Rest Willie Drye
for National Geographic News
April 16, 2004 They died in an age of horse-drawn simplicity. But the eight Confederate sailors whose remains will be buried Saturday in Charleston, South Carolina, rode to their fates in the H.L. Hunley, a technological marvel that changed the world. They made history when the Hunley, a Civil War submarine, attached a torpedo to the hull of the U.S.S. Housatonic and detonated it. The Housatonic sank just off of Charleston, and the crew of the Hunley became the first submariners in history to sink an enemy ship. But for some reason, the Hunley also sank to the bottom and didn't come up. Investment contacts The Civil War of 1948 by Infocostarica Staff Jose Figueres, better known as "Don Pepe" was an agricultural entrepreneur, an economist, a politician and a philosopher. This singular and charismatic man led the country into a civil war that would only last five weeks but would take the lives of 2000 people, mostly civilians. Other men like Rodrigo Facio Brenes-lawyer- and Carlos Monge Alfaro-historian- had founded a group of intellectuals that accused the government of corruption, and who insisted that Costa Rica had to adopt a socialist system. These intellectuals joined forces with Figueres and his party called "Partido Accion Democrata", founded in 1944 and together formed the "Partido Social Democrata" in 1945. Don Pepe had spoken against the government in a radio show in 1942, and was apprehended before ending the transmission and sent to exile to Mexico. Here, he started plotting the military take over of the Costa Rican government. Figueres and his followers accused the Calderon government of fraud and corruption, thus justifying military action as the only possibility to achieve power . Figueres signed an agreement with other Latin American countries, in which his army was to receive support in exchange for allowing Costa Rica to become a platform for destroying dictatorships in the area. After this agreement, signed in 1947, Figueres started training local and foreign militia in one of his farms.

Islam's Civil War

By Jim Hoagland
Wednesday, March 3, 2004; Page A27 Vietnam taught that Rule 1 of getting involved in foreign civil wars is famously and simply: Don't. But the United States today is caught in a civil war within Islam. Al Qaeda's murder by airliner of nearly 3,000 people on American soil in one September day in 2001 leaves Americans without any other option. Tuesday was another day of religiously inspired atrocities, in Iraq and in Pakistan this time. The latest waves of holy murders should shake from their fantasies the Islamic political leaders and religious authorities who deny that a war for control of Islam is raging around them. The war will claim many more lives if Muslim society does not face up to the cancerous growth feeding on Islam and lead not join, but lead the fight against that cancer. The Arab summit to be held at the end of March in Tunis is an important moment for a meaningful recognition of the nature of this struggle, which has been made blindingly clear in the past two days: Peacemakers and killers have each sketched out their paths to the future.

St. Mary's Hopes New Trail Generates Tourism in County By Susan Kinzie
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, April 29, 2004; Page SM05 During the Civil War, Capt. John Goldsmith, like many St. Mary's County men, crossed the Potomac River to Virginia to fight with the Confederates. His commander ordered him to destroy the lighthouse on St. Clement's Island, where troops guarded the Union flotilla in the river. But Goldsmith had lived on the island, at one time owned it. And when he slipped past a Union gunboat in his sailboat, anchored and got to the lighthouse with his dynamite, he found an old friend there. Jerome McWilliams, the keeper, pleaded with him not to burn it down because his wife was pregnant, said Lydia Wood, historic site manager for the St. Clement's Island-Potomac River Museum. So Goldsmith did not destroy the lighthouse. He knocked out the lens and took the fuel for the lamp. "Even though they were on opposite sides, there was still compassion there for their neighbors," Wood said.

New-Democratic centrists say Americans just aren't that left-leaning. The schism is wide, and it's going to get wider. By Michelle Goldberg Joe Trippi is managing Howard Dean’s presidential campaign, and when you ask him about the Democratic Leadership Council, a group representing the establishment wing of the party, his voice quickly starts to rise. “Every time the DLC attacks us we get stronger,” he says, almost shouting into the phone. “We get more people who sign up with us, more people who contribute, more people who join the campaign. We intend to build the greatest grassroots campaign of the modern era, and hundreds of thousands of people are joining us. That would bother me a lot if I was in the DLC. ” The DLC, to be sure, does not seem terribly bothered. The group has openly attacked Dean’s followers, circulating a memo in May, reprised in an

I collected these quotes and found them very useful. I hope you do too. - Bill Carrothers Selected Civil War Quotes Frederick Douglass-
In thinking of America, I sometimes find myself admiring her bright blue sky-her grand old woods-her fertile fields-her beautiful rivers-her mighty lakes and star-crowned mountains. But my rapture is soon checked when I remember that all is cursed with the infernal spirit of slave-holding and wrong; When I remember that with the waters of her noblest rivers, the tears of my brethren are borne to the ocean, disregarded and forgotten; That her most fertile fields drink daily of the warm blood of my outraged sisters, I am filled with unutterable loathing. I stand before you today a thief and a robber. I stole this head, this body, these limbs, and ran off with them. John Brown's zeal in the cause of freedom was infinitely superior to mine. Mine was as the taper light; his was as the burning sun. I could live for the slave; John Brown could die for him. The American people and the Government at Washington may refuse to recognize it for a time but the inexorable logic of events will force it upon them in the end; that the war now being waged in this land is a war for and against slavery.

Iraq Notebook: U.S. official says building Iraqi army to take time
Iraqi turmoil has little net effect on tennis pros
The CIA officers' bleak assessment was delivered orally to Washington this week, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the classified information involved. The warning echoed growing fears that Iraq's Shiite majority, which until now has accepted the U.S. occupation grudgingly, could turn to violence if its demands for direct elections are spurned. Meanwhile, Iraq's Kurdish minority is pressing for autonomy and shares of oil revenue. "Both the Shiites and the Kurds think that now's their time," one intelligence officer said. "They think that if they don't get what they want now, they'll probably never get it. Both of them feel they've been betrayed by the United States before." These dire scenarios were discussed at meetings this week by Bush, his top national-security aides and the chief U.S. administrator in Iraq, L. Paul Bremer, said a senior administration official who requested anonymity.

The American Civil War was fought between the North (Union states) and the South (Confederate states). It lasted from 1861-1865, triggered by the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Lincoln wanted to end slavery and keep the Union together.
The conflict between the North (the Yankees) and the South (the Rebels) started because of their different ways of living. The North wanted the South to give up their farms, build factories, and abolish slavery. Congress treated the slaves as personal property and would not take away rights of ownership.
Thus, America began the conflict that would take the lives of more than 620,000 of its citizens and injure more than 375,000. Most of the battles took place in the South and the recovery from the destruction took many years. This site is intended to help fifth graders better understand t

    About the Project:
When completed this collection will include accurate transcriptions of many important and representative primary texts from nineteenth century American history, with special emphasis on those sources that shed light on sectional conflict and transformations in regional identity. Because of our location in South Carolina and the salient role of its natives in the era's history there will also be a number of materials relevant to South Carolina or South Carolinians. Almost all of the documents have been transcribed from originals by myself or by Furman students. The originals are in the public domain. These electronic versions may be copied freely as long as proper attribution is given. To maintain a balance between accuracy and quick production we have decided to post some documents before the final round of proofreading has taken place. Versions that have been reverse-order proofed against the original texts are indicated with a as they are re-posted. All un-starred documents should be used with the awareness that minor errors may exist in them.

    Primary Sources: Civil War Effects
The Civil War affected Kentuckians in many different ways. Here are some primary sources letters, diaries, and personal memoirs that offer us a picture of how several Kentuckians in various circumstances experienced those times.
    Causes of the Civil War
Families Divided Many families were divided by the Civil War, as parents and children or brothers and sisters found themselves on opposite sides. The following letters and diary entries give a few examples:
    • a father and son at odds over slavery a son's note to his pro-Union family that he has left to join the Confederate army a wife's letter telling her pro-Union husband that their son has left to join the Confederacy
Kentuckians Fighting in the War A soldier's life was hard, be he Confederate or Union. Letters and diary entries by these men express their own hardships and their concern for the family at home:
    • a Kentucky Union soldier's letter to friends, 1862 a Kentucky Confederate soldier's diary entry at the Battle of Shiloh, 1862 a Kentucky Union soldier's diary entry at the Battle of Shiloh, 1862
