It was the greatest war in American history. 3 million soldiers fought - 600,000 died, making this war the heaviest of casualties in all of history. The southern states wanted to have their own nation and be able to decide what laws to have. The north did not want the country to be broken apart. In the election of 1860 Abraham Lincoln stated that he wanted to stop the spread of slavery. The southern states said that if Lincoln won, they would secede (leave) the union. When Abraham Lincoln, a known opponent of slavery, was elected president, the South Carolina legislature perceived a threat. Calling a state convention, the delegates voted to remove the state of South Carolina from the union known as the United States of America. The secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of six more states Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas and the threat of secession by four more Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America.

Conclusion Introduction Your team has been chosen to write and illustrate the premiere issue of a new line of comic books that are based on the Civil War. Your comic will follow the traditional path that a comic book takes, including the role of the "hero" and the "villain." Keep in mind that your team is creating a comic book and not a comic strip. Task The task assigned to your team is to research a specific event that occurred during the Civil War and make a comic book that focuses on that event. You will need to research the event, brainstorm the story, illustrate the comic, include the copy, and edit the comic. Remember that in comic books there are frames of illustrations and words, called copy, that go along with the pictures. You will want to use speech balloons and words at the top of the frame to describe the setting. Process In your group you will need to establish a role for each person in order to publish your comic book. The roles are: illustrator (the illustrator must illustrate the cover and the inside of the comic), a copy writer (the copy writer will print the words of the story that the team has brainstormed onto the frames of the comic), and the editor (the editor will check that the comic has a nice flow, is historically accurate, and that there are no spelling or grammatical errors). Babrak Karmal , a Banner leader, and Hafizullah Amin were elected deputy prime ministers. The leaders of the new government insisted that they were not controlled by the Soviet Union and proclaimed their policies to be based on Afghan nationalism, Islamic principles, socioeconomic justice, nonalignment in foreign affairs, and respect for all agreements and treaties signed by previous Afghan governments. Unity between the Khalq (People) and Parcham (Banner) factions rapidly faded as the People's Party emerged dominant, particularly because their major base of power was in the military. Karmal and other selected Banner leaders were sent abroad as ambassadors, and there were systematic purges of any Banner members or others who might oppose the regime. The Taraki regime announced its reform programs, including the elimination of usury, equal rights for women, land reforms, and administrative decrees in classic Marxist-Leninist rhetoric. The reform programwhich threatened to undermine basic Afghan cultural patternsand political repression antagonized large segments of the population, but major violent responses did not occur until the uprising in Nurestan late in the summer of 1978. Other revolts, largely uncoordinated, spread throughout all of Afghanistan's provinces, and periodic explosions rocked Kabul and other major cities. On Feb. 14, 1979, U.S. Ambassador Adolph Dubs was killed, and the elimination of U.S. assistance to Afghanistan was guaranteed.

Below is selection of photographs and links to other materials that were created during the Civil War years. Most of the photos in Part I are among those included in the Library of Congress' outstanding collection of original photographs. (Some photos are digitally restored.) Since I am very much a "people photographer", I lean towards those examples of Civil War photography in which the actual participants appear. These are the faces of the people who experienced the War Between the States firsthand. This very modest collection by no means tells the complete story of the War, but it is an attempt to present key images of several different aspects of the conflict. As it was with so many items, photographic materials were in short supply in the South and thus were reserved primarily for portraiture. The North had no such shortage, but the cumbersome wet plate processes of the day (and long exposures) prevented the photographers from doing the kind of war photojournalism that became so common during the twentieth century. Fortunately for us, they were willing to record everything else in a very thorough manner so that future generations would know the places and people of The War Between the States. SOMALIAN CIVIL WAR by Rage Abdullahi It was the 10th of December 1990, when I heard the sound of gun fire which was coming from the centre of Mogadishu. I thought that it was the strikers' fighting. The next day I found out that it was not the strikers', but it was rebels trying to take over the government forces. Then I saw that it was government tanks attacking the surrounding area and central Mogadishu. During this fighting, a lot of people were killed and wounded, also a lot of houses were damaged and the people were running to other areas where they thought they would be safer. But in the end, most of the people found that they had to leave Somalia as they were not safe, no matter where they went. The rebels were telling the people that they were going to take over the country and make peace, but instead they looted and robbed people of their property. The people were in total confusion, they did not know what to do. Families were separated as they were trying to get away from the fighting. A lot of people were killed while they were trying to get to Kenya and other areas where they thought they would be safe. One month later, the rebels took over the government and while people were driving around, the rebels were shooting their guns over their heads and saying that they were now going to bring peace, this did not happened.

Life in Georgia during the Civil War The stories of the Civil War that focus on men in battle are told elsewhere. The human suffering that was a result of the war is unimaginable in the United States today. The typical family farm in North Georgia has only the family members working the land (slaves were a luxury these farmers could not afford). Each member has jobs for which they were responsible, even the children. Take one or two people out of the family, many fighting a war that they frequently opposed, and what was difficult becomes almost impossible. The people of North Georgia survive for almost two years before the war moves to their farms and villages. Getting mail was a problem, especially after 1863. With many of their resources supporting the war machine, supplies become scarce. The price of flour rises to forty dollars a barrel before the end of 1862 and $125 a barrel by the end of the war. Salt is $125 dollars per bag. There was no coffee at any price because Union ships are blockading the coast since the early days of the war. And Confederate currency is rapidly becoming worthless. The euphoria that spreads over Georgia after the first few victories quickly wears off as life becomes more difficult. An interesting phenomena develops in the state, what the papers call "women seizures." While these events occur in a number of areas, one of the best-documented cases happens in
