Researching People
of the Civil War Era
Searching for a Louisiana Confederate
soldier's service record?
If you know the full name of the individual, look up the last name in Andrew B. Booth's Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers . This information was compiled from military service records now maintained by the National Archives. Once you learn the regiment and company in which the soldier served, look up a brief regimental history in Arthur W. Bergeron, Jr.'s Guide to Louisiana Confederate Military Units 1861-1865 (LSU Press, 1989). Both of these books are available in public libraries in Louisiana. From here, follow the advice below re: obtaining service and/or pension records.

Preparing for Your Research
Before we jump right into the research process, there are a few basic pointers that every new genealogist needs to know. The following guide was compiled for the novice, and only intended to give some direction for the general research of Civil War ancestors. Most researchers begin the long, arduous task of tracing their Civil War lineage with little more than a name and a family folk tale. If that sounds familiar, then you already learned the first lesson of genealogy:

The wire service leads a piece entitled "Americans would trade rights for security - experts" with this paragraph:
NEW YORK, June 7 (Reuters) - In today's America, prisoners are held incommunicado for years, newspapers can't photograph soldiers' coffins returned from Iraq and the government can secretly track the books citizens read and the movies they watch.
The article is good. I just wonder how anyone can react to the civil liberties infringements of the Bush Administration with anything but a Franklin quote:
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Pentagon: "Not bound by torture laws" If there is anyone in this world who still doubts that the Bush Administration created an environment in which torture could flourish and wilfully encouraged the torture of prisoners, a report from the Pentagon itself should be enough to convince them. The BBC reports that a Pentagon report "written by military and civilian lawyers for US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld" states that national and international prohibitions against torture do not apply to the United States.

David O. Dodd
Stained glass fron the Little Rock Arsenal in the Museum of Natural Science and History. (Photo courtesy of Aristotle Internet Access) From: The Civil War Quadrennium by William O'Donnell The winter of 1863 came, and it was a cold, harsh winter. The Arkansas River was frozen solid at Little Rock for many months. Just before the New Year, great excitement swept the city because 17-year-old David Owen Dodd had been arrested by Union troops as a Confederate spy. Word of young Dodd's arrest sent shockwaves among the remaining permanent residents of Little Rock. The regenerating grapevine picked up the information shortly after the boy was lodged in the guard house at the arsenal after being brought in from the old Hot Springs Road where, by an unfortunate mischance, he crossed the path of a Union foraging party. All the permanent residents of Little Rock knew young and handsome David Dodd, his father, mother and sister, Senhora. The Dodds had friends and relatives from Little Rock to Texas. David had worked briefly in one of the Main Street business establishments at the time when Confederate recruiting had decimated available manpower. Circumstantial evidence indicates David may have worked in Little Rock Alderman James A. Henry's mercantile store, although there is another report he had brief employment in Little Rock's new telegraph office. Alderman Henry demonstrated his strong character at this juncture by doing what he could to help young Dodd, even though he ran the risk of tighter Union surveillance of his activities. He hired William Walker, a Fort Smith attorney, to defend the boy and he went to General Steele's headquarters, seeking permission to visit David, who meantime had been transferred from the arsenal to the State Prison on the western outskirts of the city (where the Arkansas State Capitol now stands).
